About the journal

The Journal of Aerosol Science is a long-established international publication which sets out to encourage and foster all aspects of basic and applied aerosol research by publishing high-quality scientific papers in that very multidisciplinary field. The submisssion of original papers is welcomed, describing recent theoretical and experimental research relating to:
- the basic physical, chemical and biological properties of systems of airborne particles of all types.
- their measurement.
- their formation, transport, deposition and effects.
- their industrial, medical and environmental applications.
The Journal is therefore relevant to the interests of many scientists working in the areas of physics, chemistry, engineering, applied mathematics, aerobiology, medicine, industrial and environmental hygiene, materials processing, and many others. Occasional research and tutorial reviews are published which deal with specific aspects of aerosol science or establish links between various relevant disciplines.

Instructions to Authors

1. Papers should be submitted to either of the Editors-in-Chief or to a Member of the Editorial Board. Papers can be submitted electronically for consideration by the Editors of the Journal of Aerosol Science at the following website: http://authors.elsevier.com/pub/337/. Those considered to be consistent with the aims and scope of the Journal of Aerosol Science will be peer-reviewed by at least two independent referees.
2. The following types of manuscripts are acceptable for submission:
full-length paper
technical notes
comments on previously published articles, including reply
camera-ready short communications (for particularly timely subjects only).
3. Manuscript format for type-set articles:
Submit three copies, typed double-spaced on A4 or 8? x 11".
Front page should contain title, authors addresses and affiliations, corresponding author, and running title of up to 40 characters.
Abstract of up to 150 words.
Layout of the text should be consistent with the style of the Journal (see this and previous issues).
Illustrations should not be inserted into the text but should accompany the manuscript on separate sheets.
Originals should not contain any captions, only figure numbers and authors names lightly pencilled on the back. Captions should be typed on separate sheets. Black and white line drawings should be used whenever possible, either in indian ink with photoreproductive quality lettering or from a good quality laser printer (or equivalent). Dot matrix printers usually give unsatisfactory results. Half-tones in black and white are acceptable, but should be kept to a minimum. Note that all original artwork will be destroyed one month after publication, unless the corresponding author specifically requests its return.
4. Format for camera-ready short communications:
Number of camera-ready pages may not exceed four.
To expedite, it is suggested that the original. submission should be in the form of a regular typed manuscript, with submission of the camera-ready version only after acceptance.
Camera-ready copy must be typed in accordance with the instructions which may be obtained from the Editors-in-Chief, together with detailed instructions [see also information at the back of J. Aerosol Sci. (1987), Vol. 18, No 2].
5. References to literature in the text should be quoted in the form Jones (1998), Jones and Jones (1998), or Jones et al. (1998) if there are three or more authors (or if needed in parentheses as Jones et al., 1998).
The list of references should be given at the end of the text in alphabetical order, authors surnames first. The title of the journal should be abbreviated as in the World List of Scientific Periodicals (4th Edition). Issue numbers of journals should be omitted except in rare cases where confusion may result. Some examples are:
Davies, C.N. (1970) The clogging of fibrous aerosol filters. J. Aerosol Sci. 1, 35.
Fuchs, N.A. (1964) The Mechanics of Aerosols Pergamon Press, Oxford.
American Institute of Physics Handbook (1972) 3rd Edition. McGraw-Hill, New York.
Fuchs, N.A. and Sutugin, A.G. (1971) Highly dispersed aerosols. In Tropics in Current Aerosol Research (Edited by Hidy, G.M. and Brock, J.R.), pp. 1-60. Pergamon Press, Oxford.
Ouyang, M., Lui, B.Y.H., Rubov, K.L. and Hillamo. R.E. (1994) Effect of particle charge on the collection efficiency of inertial impactors. Proc. 4th Int Aerosol Conf., Los Angeles (Edited by Flagan, R.C.), pp. 695-696. References to internal or agency reports are usually not acceptable.
Citing and listing of web references. As a minimum, the full URL should be given. Any further information, if known (author names, dates, reference to a source publication etc.), should also be given. Web references can be listed separately (.e.g., after the reference list) under a different heading if desired or can be included in the reference list.
6. The use of SI units throughout is recommended; other metric units may be used at the discretion of the Editors-in-Chief. Non-metric units may be used only exceptionally (e.g.)where they have become internationally accepted industrial conventions); in such cases, however, the equivalent SI units must be provided in parentheses or, in the case of graphs, by the use of a second axis.
7. Submission of electronic manuscripts:
Delivery. Authors may now submit accepted manuscripts on 3.5" or 5.25" disks. Disks must be clearly marked with the following information: (i) operating system; (ii)disk format (e.g. DS/DD); (iii) word processor used, including version number; (iv) authors names; and (v) short title of article. Two printed copies of the final version of the manuscript should also be submitted with the disk. In the event of differences between disk and hard-copy, the hard-copy will be considered as the definitive version. Illustrations should be included separately and clearly marked. Illustrations available electronically should be supplied on separate disks and the operating system, format and graphics program used (with version number) clearly marked.
Preparation. When using a word processor to prepare a manuscript the following should be noted; (i) page design will be handled by the Publisher. There is therefore no need to use formatting commands such as centring, justifying text, indenting, etc.; (ii) use the word processor's facilities to indicate the following text attributes: bold, underline, italic, subscript, superscript, strikeout; (iii) do not use the hyphenation facilities of your word processor; and (iv) when using symbols to denote special characters please supply a list of all codes used. Use hard returns (i.e. using the Enter key) only at the end of paragraphs. Use your word processor's word-wrap feature within paragraphs.
It is essential that the printed versions supplied are produced directly from the submitted electronic version.
8. Unless otherwise specified, proofs will be sent to the corresponding author for correction, and he/she should ensure that changes are restricted to printer's errors: any other substantial corrections will be charged to the author(s).
