About the journal

Aims and Scope

The journal is of very broad interest to the large technical community concerned with the development of an understanding of the phenomenon of adhesion and its practical applications. The art of adhesion is maturing into a science that requires a broad, coordinated interdisciplinary effort to provide an understanding of its complex nature and numerous manifestations. The Journal of Adhesion provides a forum for discussion of the basic and applied problems in adhesion. Papers are considered relevant if they contribute to the understanding of the response of systems of joined materials to mechanical or other disruptive influences. Experimental papers are required to incorporate theoretical background and theoretical papers must relate to practice.

Instructions to Authors

Submission of Manuscripts

Manuscripts may be sent to any of the Associate Editors or to the Editor-in-Chief: Louis H. Sharpe, P. O. Box 3128, Williamsburg, Virginia 23187-3128. Authors are strongly encouraged to submit manuscripts on disk. The disk should be prepared using MS Word or WordPerfect and should be clearly labeled with the authors' names, file name, and software program. Three hardcopy printouts that exactly match the disk must be supplied. Each manuscript must be accompanied by a statement that it has not been published elsewhere and that it has not been submitted simultaneously for publication elsewhere. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyrighted material from other sources and are required to sign an agreement for the transfer of copyright to the publisher. All accepted manuscripts, artwork, and photographs become the property of the publisher. All parts of the manuscript should be typewritten, double-spaced, with margins of at least 2.5 cm on all sides. Number manuscript pages consecutively throughout the paper. Authors should also supply a shortened version of the title suitable for the running head, not exceeding 50 character spaces. Each article should be summarized in an abstract of not more than 150 words. Avoid abbreviations, diagrams, and reference to the text.

Illustrations

Illustrations submitted (line drawings, halftones, photos, photomicrographs, etc.) should be clean originals or digital files. Digital files are recommended for highest quality reproduction and should follow these guidelines:

  • 300 dpi or higher
  • sized to fit on journal page
  • EPS, TIFF, or PSD format only
  • submitted as separate files, not embedded in text files

Color illustrations will be considered for publication when they are an integral part of the research. Good-quality color prints should be provided, in their final size. The publisher has the right to refuse publication of any artwork deemed unacceptable.

Tables and Figures

Tables and figures should not be embedded in the text, but should be included as separate sheets or files. A short descriptive title should appear above each table with a clear legend and any footnotes suitably identified below. All units must be included. Figures should be completely labeled, taking into account necessary size reduction. Captions should be typed, double-spaced, on a separate sheet. All original figures should be clearly marked in pencil on the reverse side with the number, author's name, and top edge indicated.

References

Identify references in the text by arabic numerals in brackets, and number consecutively in the Reference Section in order of their first mention. References should include: names of all contributing authors (last names first); title of journal (journal title abbreviations should conform to Chemical Abstracts style) or book; volume number; location and name of publishing company (books only); year of publication. Examples:
Journal: [1] A. B. Smith and C. D. Jones, J. Appl. Phys. 34, 296 (1965). Book: [2] J. H. Smith, Folic Acids, (Taylor and Francis, Philadelphia, 1999). 2nd ed., Chap. 3, pp. 95-106.

Early Electronic Offprints:

Corresponding authors can now receive their article by e-mail as a complete PDF. This allows the author to print up to 50 copies, free of charge, and disseminate them to colleagues. In many cases this facility will be available up to two weeks prior to publication. Or, alternatively, corresponding authors will receive the traditional 50 offprints. A copy of the journal will be sent by post to all corresponding authors after publication. Additional copies of the journal can be purchased at the author's preferential rate of £15.00/$25.00 per copy.
