About the journal
Advances in the understanding of heat transfer and fluid flow continue to be crucial in achieving improved performance and efficiency in a broad range of mechanical and process plants. The International Journal of Heat and Fluid Flow publishes original contributions of high standards on experimental, computational, and physical aspects of convective heat transfer and fluid dynamics relevant to engineering or the environment including two-phase flows.

Papers reporting on the application of these disciplines to the design and development of manufacturing and industrial processes, with emphasis on new technological fields, are also accepted. Some of these new fields include the manufacture and operation of microelectronics and micromechanical devices and systems; medical instrumentation; environmental pollution problems; environmental control in residential and commercial facilities; high speed transportation systems; food processing; and biological systems, including the human body.

Instructions to Authors
The journal welcomes original contributions of high standard on experimental, computational and physical aspects of convective heat transfer and fluid dynamics relevant to engineering or the environment, including two-phase flows. Papers reporting the application of these disciplines to the design development of manufacturing and industrial processes are also welcomed.

Papers should not normally exceed 6000 words and 10 illustrations. Brief communications of up to 750 words reporting new results of great interest or discussing previously published papers will receive priority handling for rapid publication.

It is the author's responsibility to secure permission from the publishers of artwork or tables that have appeared elsewhere. Authors are required to declare at the time of submission if the substance, or any significant part of the scientific argument, analysis, or experimental details have been published or submitted or accepted for publication elsewhere.

No page charges are levied by the journal.

Refereeing:
All contributions are assessed by referees, selected by the Editors-in-Chief. Referees' names are not normally disclosed to authors. On acceptance for publication papers are subject to editorial amendment. Authors are solely responsible for factual accuracy of their papers.

Manuscripts:
Authors are urged to write as concisely as possible. Three copies should be submitted, typed double-spaced, on only one side of the paper and with wide margins at the top and on both sides. Papers should be written in English and units should conform to the Systeme Internationale. Papers should be arranged in the following form:

  • Full title
  • Names of the authors
  • Authors' affiliations
  • Address for correspondence
  • Summary of not more than 200 words outlining the aims, method and conclusions
  • Suggested keywords
  • Notation, listing all symbols used in the paper
  • Text, suitably subdivided under headings
  • Acknowledgments (if any)
  • References
  • Appendices (if any)
  • Tables, each on a separate sheet
  • Captions to illustrations (grouped on a separate sheet or sheets)

Please note the following points:
(1) The introduction and conclusions should be written in a form suitable for the non-specialist reader
(2) Footnotes should be avoided
(3) Always put a zero before decimal quantities less than unity, i.e. 0.376 not .376
(4) Use full stops as decimal points, not as multiplication signs
(5) Use fractional indices instead of root signs
(6) All diagrams, graphs and photographs should be referred to as figures and numbered consecutively in the text

References:
References should be cited in the text by the name of the author(s) and the year of publication, with the affix "a," "b," etc., used to distinguish publications by the same authors in the same year:
Patankar, S. V. (1980)
Chan and Tien (1985a)

The reference list should be sequenced alphabetically according to the name of the first author in the following format:
Chan, Y.L. and Tien, C.L. 1985a. A numerical study of two-dimensional natural convection in square open cavities. Num. Heat Transfer, 8, 65-80
Chan, Y. L. and Tien, C. L. 1985b. A numerical study of laminar natural convection in shallow open cavities. Int. J. Heat Mass Transfer, 28, 603-612
Patankar, S. V. 1980. Numerical Heat Transfer and Fluid Flow. Hemisphere/McGraw-Hill, Washington, 1090-1093

References should be transliterated into the Roman alphabet where necessary.

Illustrations:
It is the author's responsibility to provide original camera-ready artwork for all illustrations, both line and halftone. Upon request, all original art will be returned to the author upon publication.

For line art, submit either original drawings, PMTs (bromide, stats, prints), or high-quality tear sheets from another publication. Photocopies are not acceptable. Original drawings should be done in black ink on white paper, artist's board, or vellum, and have typeset or professionally lettered labels in Hevetica or a comparable sans serif typeface. Typewritten labels are not acceptable. Most illustrations will be reduced to the single column width of approximately 8.5 cm (20 picas); therefore, origins drawn larger to incorporate fine details should have proportionally larger labels as well, so that after reproduction labels will be approximately 8 point type. Each piece of line art should be carefully labeled with the author's name and figure number, i.e. "Jones et al., Figure 3".

For halftones, submit glossy black and white prints. Photocopies or tear sheets are not acceptable. Each print should be labeled on the back with the author's name, figure number, and an arrow indicating which edge is up if there is any ambiguity. Write on the label before placing it on the photograph; writing on the back of the photograph can leave indentations that will show when printed.

Figure captions should be typed on a separate sheet of manuscript paper, clearly labeled, but not attached to the artwork. Two copies of all artwork should be supplied in addition to the originals.

Proofs: Authors are responsible for ensuring that all manuscripts (whether original or revised) are accurately typed before final submission. One set of proofs is sent to authors before publication, which should be returned within 48 hours of receipt. Owing to the very high cost of introducing changes to the proofs, the publishers will have no alternative but to charge authors for modifications introduced at this stage other than printer's errors.

Reprints: Use order form and price list accompanying proofs.

Copyright: Before publication authors are requested to assign Copyright to Elsevier Science. This allows Elsevier Science to sanction reprints and photocopies and to authorize the reprint of complete issue of volumes according to demand. Authors' traditional rights will not be jeopardized by assigning Copyright in this manner as they will retain the right to re-use and veto over third part publication. The appropriate Copyright Transfer Form is sent to authors when their paper has been approved for publication.

Submission of Papers: Papers from authors in the Americas should be submitted to Professor F.W. Schmidt (USA). Papers from authors in Asia, Australia and New Zealand should be submitted to Professor N. Kasagi (Japan). Papers from Europe and the Middle East should be submitted to Professor B.E. Launder (UK).

The editors' addresses are to be found on the contents page for each issue.

All manuscripts submitted for publication must be accompanied by a letter or letters signed by all authors stating that they are aware of the submission and agree to have their names as coauthors.
