About the journal
International Biodeterioration & Biodegradation publishes original research papers and reviews on the biological causes of deterioration or degradation.
- The causes may be macro- or microbiological, whose origins may be aerial, aquatic, or terrestrial.
- The effects may include corrosion, fouling, rotting, decay, infection, disfigurement, toxification, weakening or processes that liquefy, detoxify, or mineralize.
- The materials affected may include natural, synthetic or refined materials [such as metals, hydrocarbons and oils, foodstuffs and beverages, pharmaceuticals, cellulose and wood, plastics and polymers, fibres, paper, leather, waste materials or any other material of commercial importance]; and structures or systems [such as buildings, works of art, processing equipment, etc.] as well as hazardous wastes, and includes environmental and occupational health aspects resulting from the activities of the biological agents described above.
Papers on all aspects of cause, mode of action, treatment, protection and prevention, analysis and testing, detoxification, upgrading, commercial implications, biocides and substitutes and related areas are welcome.
International Biodeterioration & Biodegradation is the official journal of The Biodeterioration Society and groups affiliated to the International Biodeterioration Society.
Instructions to Authors
Submission of papers
Submission of a manuscript implies that it is not being considered contemporaneously for publication elsewhere. Submission of a multi-authored manuscript implies the consent of all the participating authors. All papers will be independently refereed.
Three copies of a manuscripts should be submitted to the Editor-in-Chief, Dr Brian Flannigan, SCPS School of Life Sciences, Napier University Colinton Road, Edinburgh, EH10 5DT, UK. Fax no: 0044 131 455 2291.

Types of contributions
Original papers; review articles; case studies; short communications; reports of conferences and meetings; book reviews, and news of forthcoming meetings. The subject and content of review articles should be discussed with the Editors prior to submission to the journal. All papers should be written in English.
Manuscripts
Authors should send three copies of their manuscripts, (in double-spaced typing on pages of uniform size, with a wide margin at the left) and a disk version of their paper. Electronic manuscript submission is actively encouraged. Generally, the size of the manuscript should not exceed 10 000 words or about 20 printed pages. Each paper should be provided with an Abstract of about 100-150 words, reporting concisely on the purpose and results of the paper. Wherever possible, authors should consult an issue of the journal for style and layout. The Editors reserve the right to adjust style to certain standards of uniformity.
The SI system should be used for all scientific and laboratory data; if, in certain instances, it is necessary to quote other units, these should be added in parentheses. Temperatures should be given in degrees Celsius. The unit 'billion' (109 in America, 1012 in Europe) is ambiguous and should not be used. Abbreviations for units should follow the suggestions of the British Standards publication BS 1991. The full stop should not be included in abbreviations, e.g. m (not m.), ppm (not p.p.m.); '%' should be used in preference to 'per cent'; 'per', as in mg per litre, should be written mg litre-1. Where abbreviations are likely to cause ambiguity or cannot be readily understood by an international readership, units should be given in full. Greek symbols and unusual symbols used for the first time should be defined by name in the left-hand margin. Abbreviations of chemical or other names should be defined when first mentioned, unless the abbreviation is commonly used and internationally known and accepted.
Tables, references and legends to illustrations should be typed on separate sheets and placed at the end of the paper. Footnotes should be avoided if they contain information which could equally well be included in the text.
Disk submission
Authors are encouraged to submit a computer disk (5.25A or 3.5A HD/DD disk) containing the final version of their papers along with the final manuscript to the editorial office. Please observe the following criteria:
(1) Send only hard copy when first submitting your paper;
(2) When your paper has been refereed, revised if necessary and accepted, send a disk containing the final version with the final hard copy. Make sure that the disk and the hard copy match exactly;
(3) Specify what software was used, including which release (e.g. WordPerfect 5.1);
(4) Specify what computer was used (either IBM compatible PC or Apple Macintosh);
(5) Include the text file and separate table and illustration files, if available;
(6) The file should follow the general instructions on style/arrangement and, in particular, the reference style of the journal;
(7) The file should be single-spaced and should use the wrap-around end-of-line feature, i.e. no returns at the end of each line. All textual elements should begin on the left: no paragraph indents. Place two returns after every element such as title, headings, paragraph, figure and table call-outs;
(8) Keep a back-up disk for reference and safety.
.
References
References to published work should be indicated at the appropriate place in the text, according to the Harvard system (i.e. using author(s)' name(s) and date), with a reference list, in alphabetical order, at the end of the paper. The list should give name(s) and initial(s) of author(s) and the exact title of the paper or book. For journals there should follow the title, volume number, year of issue and initial and final page numbers of article. For books there should follow the name(s) of the editor(s) (if appropriate), the name of the publisher and the town and year of publication. Where appropriate, initial and final page numbers should also be quoted. All references in this list should be indicated at some point in the text and vice versa. Unpublished data or private communications should not appear in the reference list. References to unpublished data will only be accepted at the discretion of the Editors.
Illustrations
The original and two copies, which may be of a reduced size, of each illustration should be provided. Line drawings may be submitted in any medium providing that the image is black and very sharp. They should preferably all require the same degree of reduction; large diagrams, more than four times final size, are discouraged due to handling difficulties. The type area of the journal is 123 mm wide x 193 mm deep, and lettering should therefore be large enough to be legible after reduction of the illustration to fit (ideally 7pt lettering after reduction). Photographs should be submitted as contrasting black-and-white prints on glossy paper. Each illustration must be clearly numbered and the name(s) of the author(s) of the paper written on the reverse side.
Proofs
The author (or the selected author where several are involved) will receive a set of proofs for information purposes. Nonew material may be inserted in the text at the time of proof reading unless accepted by the Editors. All joint communications must indicate the name and full postal address of the author to whom proofs should be sent.
Papers will normally be published in order of acceptance by the Editors, although this may occasionally be changed for reasons of space, or to publish more quickly particular papers which the Editors consider of topical interest.
Page charges and offprints
There will be no page charges. Twenty-five offprints of each paper will be supplied free of charge. For review articles one hundred reprints will be supplied free of charge. Additional copies can be ordered at current printing prices.
Author Services Authors can also keep a track on the progress of their accepted article, and set up e-mail alerts informing them of changes to their manuscript's status, by using the 'Track a Paper' feature of Elsevier's Author Gateway.
