About the journal
The IMA Journal of Applied Mathematics is a direct successor of the Journal of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications which was started in 1965 with the aim of publishing papers in all areas of the application of mathematics. Since the appearance of the IMA Journal of Numerical Analysis in 1981, analytic and numerical treatments of both physical and non-physical applied mathematical problems, including those arising in industry, have formed the main part of the Journal's contents. The Journal also seeks to publish papers on new developments of existing mathematical methods, especially those that have relevance to more than one field of application and also new mathematical methods suggested by particular applications. Longer papers which survey recent progress in topical fields of mathematics and its applications are also published.
Instructions to Authors
Submission of manuscriptsAuthors should email or post electronic files or original manuscripts to the Production Editor (ima@maxinesmith.demon.co.uk) or by post to Maxine Smith, Oxford Journals, 1 Sanford Street, Swindon, SN1 1HJ, UK.
Authors must indicate which one of the three Editors should review the manuscript, according the subject areas listed below under each Editor's name. Authors should also supply a list of between three and five referees who would be suitable to referee the paper. Please enclose full name, email and full postal addresses.
Electronic submissions are particularly welcomed, and these should be in the form of a single postscript or pdf file. Authors of accepted papers will be asked to provide a LATEX file of the paper, so please bear this in mind when preparing the paper for submission. Further information on this is given below.
Alternatively hard copies can be sent, and in that case four clear copies are required. Authors should also send two copies of any of their own unpublished work to which crucial reference is made in the paper submitted. If, in the opinion of the Editor, a paper is more suitable for one of the other IMA Journals, they may forward it directly to the editors of that journal for consideration, subject to the consent of the authors.
Editors:Professor Alan R. Champneys Optics, engineering dynamics, control theory, aerospace engineering, computational applied mathematics, dynamical systems, nonlinear waves, elasticity theory, artifical intelligence, neural networks
Professor David J. Needham Reaction diffusion, fluid dynamics, multiphase flow, granular media, nonlinear waves, dynamical systems, meteorology, partial differential equations, industrial mathematics, diffraction
Professor Demetrios T. Papageorgiou Fluid dynamics, computational fluid dynamics, interfacial waves, water waves, hydrodynamic stability, microgravity flows, multiphase flows, aerodynamics, dynamical systems, combustion, financial mathematics.
Authors may not submit papers that are under consideration for publication elsewhere, and, if an author decides to offer a submitted paper to another journal, the paper must be withdrawn from IMAMAT before the new submission is made.
Form of manuscriptThe required minimum line spacing in all parts of the manuscript including references is three lines per inch i.e. double the standard line spacing of typewritten text. Only one side of each page should be used in at least one of the copies. The title page should include the name, affiliation and address of each author, and a short abstract. Each section, including the introduction, should be numbered, with equations numbered, for example (2.1), (2.2), etc. in section 2, on the right-hand side of the page. Nonstandard notation should be explained in the text. Footnotes should be avoided. A list of tables and figure captions should be appended to the manuscript. Drawings should be suitable for direct photographic reproduction at printed size.
ReferencesThe Harvard system of references, giving the surname of the author(s) and year of publication in the text, should be used. Each listed reference should begin with the authors' surnames followed by initials, the year, and the title of the work. Then, for a journal article, the journal name (abbreviated in accordance with Mathematical Reviews), volume number, and inclusive page numbers should follow, while, for a book, the title, the editor (if applicable), the place of publication, and publisher should be stated.
Copyright/OffprintsIt is a condition of publication in the Journal that authors grant an exclusive licence to the Institute of Mathematics and Its Applications. This ensures that requests from third parties to reproduce articles are handled efficiently and consistently and will also allow the article to be as widely disseminated as possible. In assigning copyright, authors may use their own material in publications provided that the Journal is acknowledged as the original place of publication, and Oxford University Press is notified in writing and in advance. In consideration of this, the publisher will supply 25 offprints, without covers, of each paper. Further offprints may be ordered at extra cost at the proof stage.
Acceptance of LATEX by the IMA Journal of Applied MathematicsAuthors of accepted papers will be asked to provide the LATEX source files of the paper. In preparing the paper, please use the standard article.cls file and when sending the source file for submission, please ensure that all the macros used to write your paper accompany the manuscript.
Please follow all the usual instructions to authors as detailed above, however, text width should be set to 30 picas (126 mm) and the page depth to 46 picas (195 mm). It is very important to follow the correct referencing system - see point 3 in the instructions to authors. |
