About the journal
|
Grass and Forage Science has subscribers in nearly 70 countries. It is a major English language journal that publishes the results of research and development in all aspects of grass and forage production, management and utilization, occasional reviews of the state of knowledge on relevant topics, and book reviews. Authors are also invited to submit papers on non-agricultural aspects of grassland managment such as recreational and amenity use and the environmental implications of all grassland systems. Hitherto, the Journal has concentrated on temperate regions but now considers papers irrespective of climatic zone |

Instructions to Authors
Manuscripts
Three copies of the manuscript, each accompanied by copies of all tables, figures and illustrations should be sent to the Editor:
Professor John A Milne The British Grassland Society Department of Agriculture PO Box 237 University of Reading Reading RG6 6AR UK Tel: +44 (0) 118 9318189 Fax: +44 (0) 118 966 6941 e-mail: bgs@patrol.i-way.co.uk Web Page: http://www.i-way.co.uk/~bgs
Grass and Forage Science publishes the results of research and development in grass and forage production, management and utilization. It also publishes results dealing with amenity and recreational uses of grasslands and with the environmental implications of grassland systems. Papers are considered irrespective of climactic zone. Originality is required in papers submitted for publication but this does not preclude the publication of material of a developmental nature. Papers must not have been submitted for publication elsewhere, and on acceptance they become the copyright of the journal. All accepted papers should be accompanied by a copyright assignment form. To access this form please click here.
Papers must be as concise as possible and only tables and figures essential to the understanding of the paper should be presented. No limit is imposed on the length of papers except that the Editor reserves the right to require authors to alter the length of their papers and that papers submitted for publication as Research Notes shall not exceed 1500 words or their equivalent in length.
Authors should refer to the Notes for the Guidance of Contributors published in Volume 34 Number 1 (March 1979), and may also find the following publications useful in preparing their papers.
General Notes on the Preparation of Scientific Papers 3rd edition. London: The Royal Society, 1974.
Units, Symbols and Abbreviations. London: The Royal Society of Medicine. 1971.
Metric Units Conversion Factors and Nomenclature in Nutritional and Food Sciences. London: The Royal Society, 1972.
Papers should be typed on one side of A4 paper, double spaced with wide margins. The title page should give the title of the article, the names and initials of each author, the department and institution to which the work should be attributed, and the name, address, telephone and fax numbers and e-mail address of the author for correspondence. All pages must be numbered. Three types of headings are available and it would be helpful if authors indicated in the left-hand margin in pencil the relative importance of headings by the use of capital letters, i.e.(A) for the main headings, (B) for second headings and (C) for the least important headings. A brief informative Abstract not exceeding 200 words must be typed on a separate sheet. The Introduction to the paper should explain briefly the nature of the investigation and the reasons for conducting it: a full review of the relevant literature is not necessary. Experimental results should be presented in either tabular or diagrammatic form, but not in both forms. The Discussion of the results should conclude with a clear statement of their importance and application.
Abbreviations and units
All numerical data must be presented in System International (SI) units. The 24 hour clock should be used for time. Abbreviations should be used for all units and numerical values should be given in figures except where the number begins a sentence. Where a number does not refer to a unit of measurement it should be spelled out except if it exceeds one hundred. Abbreviations may be used for other physical quantities (e.g. DM for dry matter) provided that they are given in full when first mentioned in the paper and are followed by the abbreviation in brackets, e.g. dry matter (DM). Particular attention should be paid to the composition of fertilizers; the abbreviations N, P, P205. K and K,O may be used without definition at the first occurrence, but P should not be used to indicate phosphate (P,05) nor K to indicate potash (K,O).
Tables, Figures and Illustrations
Tables must be typed on separate sheets and numbered. Figures should be suitable for 50% reduction and should be drawn or grouped so that they will fit within the type area (210 ¡Á 155 mm) or single column width (75 mm). The original artwork of the authors will be used; labelling should be in sans serif typeface so that after reduction it is no smaller than 8 pt; symbols and lines should be distinct after reduction; histograms should be black, white or hatched in distinctive ways; background rules should not be used. Each table and figure should have the author's name and the number written on the back in pencil and should have a caption which makes the material comprehensible without reference to the text. The caption should be typed on a separate sheet and the approximate position of the table or figure should be indicated in the margin of the typescript. Photographs should be good quality glossy prints similarly labelled lightly and in pencil on the reverse side.
Please send us digital versions of your figures if at all possible (EPS and TIFF files only). Always enclose hard copies of digitally supplied figures. Full details of submission of manuscripts and artwork on disk are available on the web at http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/authors/journal.asp In the full-text online edition of the journal, figure legends may be truncated in abbreviated links to the full screen version. Therefore, the first 100 characters of any legend should inform the reader of the key aspects of the figure.
It is the policy of Grass and Forage Science for authors to pay the full cost for the reproduction of their colour artwork. Therefore, please note that if there is colour artwork in your manuscript when it is accepted for publication, Blackwell Publishing require you to complete and return a colour work agreement form before your paper can be published. This form can be downloaded as a PDF from the internet. The web address for the form is: http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/pdf/Sub3000_X_CoW.pdf If you are unable to access the internet, or are unable to download the form, please contact the Production Editor gfs@oxon.blackwellpublishing.com, and they will be able to email or fax a form to you.
Any article received by Blackwell Publishing with colour work will not be published until the form has been returned.
If authors wish to apply for funds to cover the costs of colour printing, the British Grassland Society can provide relevant support letters to funding bodies, indicating acceptance of the paper.
References
References should be made in the text by giving the author's name with the year of publication in round brackets. When reference is made to work by more than two authors only the first author's name should be given following by et al. If several papers by the same first author or by first authors with the same surname and published in the same year are cited, the year of publication should be suffixed by the letters a, b, c, etc. All sources quoted in the text should be listed alphabetically by the author's surname in a list of References at the end of the paper. Each reference should be arranged in the appropriate standard as follows:
MOWAT D.J. and CLAWSON S. (1996) Oviposition and hatching of the clover weevil Sitona lepidus Gyll. (Coleoptera: Curculionidae). Grass and Forage Science, 51, 418-423

Titles of periodicals should be given in full but issue numbers within volumes are not required unless each issue is paginated separately.
Proofs
Proofs will be sent via e-mail as an Acrobat PDF (portable document format) file and should be returned to the Editor within 3 days of receipt. Major alterations to the text and illustrations are only accepted when absolutely necessary and the additional costs will be charged to the author.
The e-mail server must be able to accept attachments up to 4 MB in size. Acrobat Reader will be required in order to read this file. This software can be downloaded (free of charge) from the following Web site: www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2
This will enable the file to be opened, read on screen, and printed out in order for any corrections to be added. Further instructions will be sent with the proof. Proofs will be posted if no e-mail address is available; in your absence, please arrange for a colleague to access your e-mail to retrieve the proofs.
Offprints
Offprints may be purchased and should be ordered when proofs are returned. They are usually sent out about six weeks after publication.
DisksThe journal welcomes the submission of accepted articles on disk. Do not justify the lines of text. All disks must be accompanied by a hard copy of the paper together with a completed file description form: http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/pdf/fdf.pdf. Particular attention should be taken to ensure that any articles submitted in this form adhere exactly to journal style. Further details may be obtained from the Publisher.
