About the journal
|
Grana is an international journal of palynology and aerobiology.
Grana, originally published as Grana Palynologica, was founded in 1954 by Professor Gunnar Erdtman. It is published under the auspices of the Scandinavian Palynological Collegium (CPS) in affiliation with the International Association for Aerobiology (IAA). Grana publishes original papers, mainly on ontogony (morphology, and ultrastructure of pollen grains and spores of Eucaryota and their importance for plant taxonomy, ecology, phytogeography, paleobotany, etc.) and aerobiology. Aerobiology involves studies of airborne biological particles, such as pollen, spores, etc., and their launching, dispersal and final deposition. The significance of these particles in medicine (allergology) and plant pathology is of particular interest. |

Instructions to Authors
GRANA publishes original research papers of two categories: Articles, not exceeding 20 printed pages (the first 16 pages are free of charge, additional pages at present incur a cost of NOK 800:-, approx. US$ 123, per page) and Short Communications (preliminary reports of special significance that are given expedited publication). The papers submitted are considered for publication on the understanding that they have not been submitted or accepted for publication elsewhere.
Submission of manuscripts. Submit three sets of all material, including illustrations and tables. Authors are asked to study the instructions carefully before preparing their manuscript. Papers should be consistently written in British English or American English. Papers in French or German are accepted on the condition that an Abstract, an extensive Summary, and figure and table legends are provided in English. Authors are responsible for submitting their text to linguistic revision prior to submission.
Electronic Manuscripts The editors encourage submissions on diskette to facilitate rapid accessibility of your work to the readers. The electronic files and the printout must be identical. Cost of changes to the electronic manuscript may be charged to the author(s). The diskette should be labelled with your name and the name of the computer platform and version of the word processing system you have used. Please observe that we can receive files from any word processing system; however, styled Microsoft Word files are preferred. Halftones and colour photos should be included separately.
Please use these simple guidelines when preparing your electronic manuscript:
1. Please be consistent. The same elements should be keyed in exactly the same way throughout the manuscript.
2. Do not break words at the end of lines. Use a hyphen only to hyphenate compound words.
3. Enter only one space after the full-stop at the end of a sentence.
4. When emphasising words, please use the italic feature of your word processor software.
5. Do not justify your text; use a ragged right-hand margin.
6. Use a double hyphen (--) to indicate a dash in text.
7. Do not use the lowercase l for 1 (one) or the uppercase O for 0 (zero).
8. The space bar should only be used as a word separator. Use TAB when indenting paragraphs or separating columns in tables.
9. Please keep graphic elements (e.g. images) as separate files (e.g. EPS- or TIFF-files). Originals of good quality can also be submitted as usual.
Please print out the submittal form, fill it out and send it together with your diskette and printed copies to the editorial office:

Preparation and organisation of manuscripts. Doublespace the entire manuscript and leave at least a 5 cm right margin. Organize the paper: Title, Abstract, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusions, Acknowledgements and List of references. Type the page number in the upper right-hand corner of each page. Scientific names of genera and taxa of lower rank should be underlined to indicate italics. Abbreviations and symbols should conform with those in Biological Abstracts. Contributors to Grana are recommended to use the palynological terms adopted by the International Federation of the Palynological Society (IFPS), Glossary of Pollen and Spore Terminology (1994).
Title. The title should include: 1) a concise and informative title (short subtitles are encouraged), 2) a short running headline of no more than 40 characters.
Full Christian name(s) and surname(s) of authors below the title.
Abstract. The main text should be preceded by an abstract not exceeding 250 words. Append author's name, complete postal address and telephonenumbers after the abstract.
Main text. There will generally be four types of headings. Examples: 1. RESULT AND DISCUSSION 2. Description of pollen grains 3. Exine structure 4. Shoulder heading. - This headings is followed by text on the same line (as shown here).
References in text. The references should he cited in the text as, Kuprianova (1973) or as specially citated e.g., ...distant transport of grass inconsiderable (Hyde & Williams 1945:93), and in the case of authors of plant taxa, e.g., Sida ammophila F. Muell., 1967. In referring to personal communications, the year should be added (P. Sorsa 1975: pers. comm.).
Reference list. Only printed publications cited in the text should appear in the Reference list. List them alphabetically under the author's or editor's name and then chronologically. Use arabic numerals for volume numbers. Write out journal names in full.
Examples: Journal: Erdtman. G. & Praglowski. J. 1959. Six notes on pollen morphology and pollen morphological techniques. -Botaniska Notiser 112: 175-184.
Chapter: Heslop-Harrison, J. 1964. Cell walls, cell membranes and protoplastic connections during meiosis and pollen development. - In: Pollen physiology and fertilisation (ed. H.F. Linskens). pp. 40-47. - North Holland Publishing Co., Amsterdam.
Book: F©¡gri, K. & Iversen, J. 1989. Textbook of pollen analysis. 4th ed. by K. F©¡gri. R. E. Kalland & K.Krzywinski. - J. Wiley & Sons, Chichester. New York, Brisbane, Toronto, Singapore.
Tables. Each table must start on a separate sheet. They should be numbered with roman numerals according to their sequence in the text and have a short self-explanatory heading. Use SI units.
Illustrations. Figures should be professionally drawn or photographed and delivered as glossy black-and-white photographic prints. Computer-drawn figures are accepted provided they are of high quality. Figures must be prepared for printing, 81 x 224 mm, (column) or 167 x 224 mm, (page) width. The figure(s) must be numbered consecutively in arabic numerals indicated in the lower left-hand corner. The principles on orientation of pollen grains/spores suggested by G. Erdtman (1952:17) are recommended. Labelling in the figures should be clearly readable. Use a bar scale to indicate magnifications (SEM,TEM). Author's name should be typed on a gummed label and affixed to the back of each illustration. Figure legends should be written on separate sheets.
Proofs. Authors will receive proofs directly front the printers. It is the author's full responsibility to correct the proofs according to the manuscript. After correction the marked proofs and the offprint order form should be returned to: Taylor & Francis AB, PO Box 3255, S-103 65 Stockholm, Sweden
Offprints. 50 offprints of each article without separate cover will be supplied free of charge if ordered on the offprint order form. Additional copies may be ordered on the same order form.
