About the journal

Genetica publishes papers dealing with genetics, population dynamics and evolution, including population structure, genome evolution, speciation, behavior, conservation, whatever the taxon considered. In all cases the guiding thread is evolution. Genetica mainly publishes research papers but reviews, short communications and brief reports are also welcome. Special issues, generally requested by the editors in chief, are regularly published.

The fast pace of contemporary genetic research requires significant findings be transmitted to the scientific community as rapidly as possible. Rapid publication of significant papers is not only of benefit to authors, but also to readers who need to stay abreast of the latest developments in their field. The editorial policies at Genetica are designed to insure that manuscripts are reviewed within three to four weeks of submission and published within two to three months of final acceptance.
In addition to providing for rapid publication, Genetica maintains high scientific standards. Genetica's editorial staff consists of more than sixty geneticists of international repute representing a broad spectrum of scientific expertise.

Instructions to Authors

Manuscript Submission

Submission of a manuscript implies: that the work described has not been published before; that it is not under consideration for publication anywhere else; that its publication has been approved by all co-authors, if any, as well as by the responsible authorities – tacitly or explicitly – at the institute where the work has been carried out. The publisher will not be held legally responsible should there be any claims for compensation.

Permissions

Authors wishing to include figures, tables, or text passages that have already been published elsewhere are required to obtain permission from the copyright owner(s) for both the print and online format and to include evidence that such permission has been granted when submitting their papers. Any material received without such evidence will be assumed to originate from the authors.

Online Submission

Authors should submit their manuscripts online. Electronic submission substantially reduces the editorial processing and reviewing times and shortens overall publication times. Please follow the hyperlink “Submit online” on the right and upload all of your manuscript files following the instructions given on the screen.

Title page

The title page should include:
  • The name(s) of the author(s)
  • A concise and informative title
  • The affiliation(s) and address(es) of the author(s)
  • The e-mail address, telephone and fax numbers of the corresponding author

Abstract

Please provide an abstract of 150 to 250 words. The abstract should not contain any undefined abbreviations or unspecified references.
Key words

Please provide 5 to 10 key words or short phrases in alphabetical order.

Abbreviations

Abbreviations and their explanations should be collected in a list.

Text

Four levels of headings should be used in the text. The first level should be bold-faced, freestanding and positioned flush to the left margin. This heading level should be reserved for blocks or text that constitute a major fraction of the article (e.g. Materials and methods). The second level of headings should be italics, freestanding, flush left. This heading level is used to group two or more closely related third-level heads in long-papers. The third level headings is the most frequently used subhead. It is italics, flush left with no white line underneath and is used to initiate the first paragraph of a sub-topic. The fourth level heading is paragraph-initiating italic followed by a colon. Desired location of tables and figures should be indicated in the margins.

Text citations with three or fewer authors should include all names while those with four or more authors should cite the first author and et al. Only articles that are published or in press should be cited. Citations of personal communications or unpublished results should list all names and initials. Numbers of ten or less should be written in full unless part of a date, a fraction or decimal, a percent or a unit of measurement.

Taxonomic names

Taxonomic names of genera and lower taxa should be italicized. Authors are requested to mention the authorities of any taxa named in the articles.

Figure Lettering

  • To add lettering, it is best to use Helvetica or Arial (sans serif fonts).
  • Keep lettering consistently sized throughout your final-sized artwork, usually about 2–3 mm (8–12 pt).
  • Variance of type size within an illustration should be minimal, e.g., do not use 8-pt type on an axis and 20-pt type for the axis label.
  • Avoid effects such as shading, outline letters, etc.
  • Do not include titles or captions within your illustrations.

Figure Numbering

  • All figures are to be numbered using Arabic numerals.
  • Figures should always be cited in text in consecutive numerical order.
  • Figure parts should be denoted by lowercase letters (a, b, c, etc.).
  • If an appendix appears in your article and it contains one or more figures, continue the consecutive numbering of the main text. Do not number the appendix figures, "A1, A2, A3, etc." Figures in online appendices (Electronic Supplementary Material) should, however, be numbered separately.

Figure Captions

  • Each figure should have a concise caption describing accurately what the figure depicts. Include the captions in the text file of the manuscript, not in the figure file.
  • Figure captions begin with the term Fig. in bold type, followed by the figure number, also in bold type.
  • No punctuation is to be included after the number, nor is any punctuation to be placed at the end of the caption.
  • Identify all elements found in the figure in the figure caption; and use boxes, circles, etc., as coordinate points in graphs.
  • Identify previously published material by giving the original source in the form of a reference citation at the end of the figure caption.

Appendices

This section should be reserved for large bodies of data of mathematical derivations that would disrupt the main text.

Cross-Referencing

In the text, a reference identified by means of an author¡®s name should be followed by the date of the reference in parentheses and page number(s) where appropriate. When there are more than two authors, only the first author¡®s name should be mentioned, followed by ¡®et al.¡®. In the event that an author cited has had two or more works published during the same year, the reference, both in the text and in the reference list, should be identified by a lower case letter like ¡®a¡® and ¡®b¡® after the date to distinguish the works.

Examples:
Winograd (1986, p. 204)
(Winograd , 1986a, b)
(Winograd, 1986; Flores et al., 1988)
(Bullen, Beauchamp & Bennett, 1990)

Acknowledgements

Acknowledgements of people, grants, funds, etc. should be placed in a separate section before the References.

References

References to books, journal articles, articles in collections and conference or workshop proceedings, and technical reports should be listed at the end of the article in alphabetical order (see examples below). Articles in preparation or articles submitted for publication, unpublished observations, personal communications, etc. should not be included in the reference list but should only be mentioned in the article text (e.g., T. Moore, personal communication).

References to books should include the author¡®s name; year of publication; title; page numbers where appropriate; publisher; place of publication, in the order given in the example below.

Green, M.M., 1988. Mobile DNA elements and spontaneous gene mutation, pp. 41-50 in Eukaryotic Transposable Elements as Mutagenic Agents, edited by M.E. Lambert, J.F. McDonald and I.B. Weinstein. Cold Spring Harbor Press, Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.

References to articles in periodicals should include the author¡®s name; year of publication; abbreviated title of periodical; volume number (issue number where appropriate); first and last page numbers, in the order given in the example below. All abbreviations of titles of journals should be in accordance with the World List of Scientific Periodicals.

Zhou, J.H., A. Myers & A. Atherly, 1991. Functional analysis of terminal sequences of the maize controlling element (Ac) by internal replacement and deletion mutagenesis. Genetica 80: 1-17.

Proofs

Proofs will be sent to the corresponding author. One corrected proof, together with the original, edited manuscript, should be returned to the Publisher within three days of receipt by mail (airmail overseas).

Offprints

50 offprints of each article will be provided free of charge. Additional offprints can be ordered by means of an offprint order form supplied with the proofs.

Page Charges and Colour Figures

No page charges are levied on authors or their institutions. Colour plates will be inserted only at the author¡®s expense.

Copyright

Authors will be asked, upon acceptance of an article, to transfer copyright of the article to the Publisher. This will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information under copyright laws.

Permissions

It is the responsibility of the author to obtain written permission for a quotation from unpublished material, or for all quotations in excess of 250 words in one extract or 500 words in total from any work still in copyright, and for the reprinting of figures, tables or poems from unpublished or copyrighted material.
