About the journal

General Hospital Psychiatry explores the linkages and interfaces among psychiatry, medicine and primary care. The Journal emphasizes a biopsychosocial approach to illness and health, and provides a forum for communication among professionals with clinical, academic, and research interests in psychiatry's essential function in "the mainstream of medicine." Building upon those liaison consultation and psychiatric services which have burgeoned in the general hospital setting, the Journal expands beyond this base to encourage new contributions to the understanding and treatment of illness - in inpatient, ambulatory, and community settings. Studies of multisystem relationships of life stresses, physical experience, psychosocial factors, interpersonal and intrapsychic reactions, family structure, ecological change, and institutional forces are especially relevant to the Journal's objectives. General Hospital Psychiatry publishes original articles on biopsychosocial approaches to medicine; liaison-consultation psychiatry; the relationship of psychiatric services to general medical systems; and new directions in medical education which stress psychiatry's role in primary care, family practice, and continuing education. It also features Brief Communications, News and Notes, Book Reviews, and Medical Psychiatric Rounds, of interest to physicians and other professionals and students in this field.

Instructions to Authors

Manuscripts should be submitted to the Editor-in-Chief: Don R. Lipsitt, M.D., Department of Psychiatry, Mount Auburn Hospital, 330 Mt. Auburn Street, Cambridge, MA 02238. All manuscripts considered suitable for the Journal are strictly refereed. Articles are accepted with the understanding that they are original contributions submitted solely to general hospital psychiatry. Clinical reports, research papers, review articles, brief communications, and news and notes may be submitted. Brief communications may include special case reports demonstrating clinical or theoretical issues of particular interest, new and promising teaching techniques, and relevant preliminary research reports. These should not normally exceed 1,000 words. Reports of clinical case conferences for Medical Psychiatric Rounds should be submitted to: Norman B. Levy, M.D., Medical Psychiatric Rounds Editor, Department of Psychiatry, Coney Island Hospital, Brooklyn, NY 11235. Book reviews will be published by invitation of the Book Review Editor. Letters to the Editor are invited for comment on a topic of current interest or on material published in the Journal. These are subject to editing according to space limitations. Letters to the Editor that consist of single case reports will be refereed in the customary manner and may include up to one table, 8-10 references, and 1,000 words of text. Full-length manuscripts should include an abstract of up to 200 words. Editorial changes necessary to improve clarity and conformity to Journal style may be made without prior consultation with authors. Any editorial changes, however, will be subject to author's review prior to publication.

Four copies of the manuscript (paper) should be submitted, typed double-spaced throughout, with wide margins, on white 8 X 11 inch paper, on one side only. Pages should be numbered consecutively, and corresponding author's name should be typed in the upper right corner of each page. The title page must include the full names of authors, academic or professional affiliations, and complete address and phone number of the corresponding author. Up to five key words and a running title of no more than 45 characters should be indicated on the title page. Reference lists, tables, and figure legends should be typed on separate sheets. Tables, numbered in order of their mention with Arabic numerals, should have brief descriptive titles.

Authors are encouraged to submit a 3?inch HD/DD computer disk to the editorial office. Please observe the following criteria. Send only hard copy when first submitting your paper for acceptance and review. When your paper has been refereed, revised if necessary, and accepted, send a disk containing the final version with the final hard copy. Make certain that the disk and hard copy match exactly. Specify what software was used, including which release, e.g., WordPerfect 6.1. Specify what computer was used (IBM compatible PC, Apple Macintosh, etc.). The article file should include all textural material (text, references, tables, figure captions, etc.) and separate illustration files, if available. The file should follow the general instructions on style/arrangement and, in particular, the reference style of this journal as given in the Information for Authors. The file should be single spaced and should use the wrap-around end-of-line feature, i.e., returns at the end of paragraphs only. Place two returns after every element, such as title, headings, paragraphs, figure and table callouts. Be sure to keep a back-up disk for reference and safety.

Line artwork should be submitted in the form of black-ink drawings of professional quality or glossies of originals. These should preferably be 3 inches in width, but, if necessary, may be a maximum of 6 inches in width. Duplicates may be photocopies. On the back of each illustration, write lightly in pencil the author's name, figure number, and indication of "top."

Footnotes to the text should be numbered consecutively with superior Arabic numerals. Footnotes to tables should be indicated by superior lowercase letters.

References should be listed numerically, corresponding to their order of appearance in the text. Citation in the text is by Arabic numeral in brackets, [1]. Use et al. only for six or more authors: et al. follows the names of the first three authors. References should be styled as follows:

Journal: Lipowski ZJ. Consultation-liaison psychiatry: general principles. Psychosom Med 1967;29:153-71.

Periodical abbreviations should follow those used in Index Medicus.

Proofs and reprints. The corresponding author will receive proofs, which should be corrected and returned within 48 hours of receipt. Reprints may be ordered prior to publication; consult the price list that accompanies proofs.

Copyright. Upon acceptance of an article by the Journal, the author will be sent a copyright transferal form along with acknowledgment of acceptance of manuscript. The author is asked to transfer copyright of the article to the publisher. This transfer will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information under U.S. Copyright Law.
