About the journal

| Aims and Scope |

Expert Systems is a quarterly journal devoted to all aspects of artificial intelligence and advanced computing. The journal's readers include knowledge engineers, artificial intelligence researchers, project managers, computer scientists and managers. It is written for those who need an international perspective on expert systems and neural networks, whether as developer, supplier or potential user.
Expert Systems acts as a forum for the expert systems and neural networks community increasing awareness of what these technologies are and of the potential they have for decision-makers in industry, business and government.
The journal covers the development and use of advanced computing in areas:
- which humans find intellectually difficult, and
- which involve expertise or specialised knowledge, and
- which are the subject of continuing research, or of interest to those implementing current systems.
These criteria exclude most aspects of fields such as natural language processing and machine vision; although these are computationally difficult, and the focus of much continuing research, they are not considered intellectually difficult or the preserve of expertise among humans. They also exclude topics such as most types of mathematical calculation and statistics, which humans find difficult, but which are not a significant computational problem.
These criteria form the focus for research into expert systems (also known as knowledge based systems and as knowledge systems) and related disciplines. These include:
- Expertise and related topics such as knowledge acquisition via elicitation or machine learning, knowledge representation, and human decision making.
- Software engineering for such systems and related topics such as neural nets, genetic algorithms, intelligent agents, decision support systems and some aspects of intelligent user modelling.
- Case studies and analyses of successful and unsuccessful stystem use, and factors affecting the acceptance of such systems.

Instructions to Authors
Expert Systems: The International Journal of Knowledge Engineering and Neural Networks is a quarterly technical journal devoted to all aspects of the development and use of advanced computing. It welcomes papers on any subject within the journal's remit. Papers are published on the condition that authors are prepared to assign the copyright to Blackwell Publishers Ltd. Articles should contain significant technical information that will be of general interest to people working in that field and should present information on the technical aspects of the work reported, rather than on the application domain. Any system presented should be described in useful detail with examples to illustrate its construction and use. Articles should display a well-grounded knowledge of the current scene in their field. Please send submissions to the journal editor:
Dr Gordon Rugg Editor, Expert Systems Department of Computer Science Keele University Keele, Staffordshire ST5 5BG UK
All academic papers are subject to refereeing. When you submit a paper, please bear in mind the following points. They speed up the process of refereeing and publication.
Manuscript
Please submit three copies of your manuscript on white A4 (or US equivalent) paper. Please double space the text. Text should either be laser printed or typed: dot matrix printout is acceptable only if it is in Near Letter Quality. If sending photocopies, please make sure that the copy is clean and legible. If you use continuous stationery, please separate the sheets. Pages should be numbered. The first page of the manuscript should bear the names and full addresses of the authors. Where there is more than one author, please indicate to whom correspondence should be sent, as well as contact address, phone and fax numbers, and email address.
Disks
On acceptance, one copy of the manuscript should also be sent in electronic form, on 3.5 disk compatible with MS-DOS. Please enclose a note with the disk saying what kind of wordprocessor was used and what kind of computer the disk is formatted for. Please do not send Rich Text Format.
Figures
Figures should be neatly drawn in black on a good white base on separate pages, with their position clearly marked and referred to in the text. Each diagram or table should be clearly captioned. Lettering and numbering should be large enough to be legible if reduced, which may be by up to 50%. Figures should not be marked in any way as we may reproduce them directly. Please do not embed figures in a wordprocessor file; we only have to extract them again. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to use figures borrowed from other works.
Style
Submissions will be edited to adhere to the Expert Systems house style. Academic papers should always commence with an abstract and an introduction, and finish with a conclusion. Papers and articles should be written in gender-free language. It may be helpful to study previous editions of the journal to note style points. Please make sure that headings are clearly and consistently numbered so as to indicate level.
References
Please provide full information in every case. Completeness and accuracy of the references is the responsibility of the author. References are quoted in the text by giving, in parentheses, the author's name and year of publication, for example: (Berliner 1987; Matson & Mellichamp 1993). References not mentioned in the text should be listed separately as 'Further reading. '
