About the journal

Experimental and Applied Acarology publishes original papers of a high scientific standard in this field. The journal aims to bring together basic and applied research papers mainly on mites and ticks, including all aspects of their control. The scope encompasses agricultural mites, stored-product mites, parasitic mites, mites of environmental significance and ticks of medical and veterinary importance. Submission of papers on tick-host interactions and relationships between ticks and tick-borne pathogens is encouraged. Subject matter dealt with may originate from a wide variety of disciplines, such as ecology, epidemiology, physiology, biochemistry, toxicology and pesticide resistance, immunology, genetics and molecular biology.

Instructions to Authors

Submission

Manuscripts must be submitted in English and must be original, unpublished work not under consideration for publication elsewhere. Three copies of the manuscript together with all original figures and tables should be submitted to one of the Editors. Manuscripts dealing with tick research should be submitted to F. Jongejan, all other manuscripts should be submitted to J. Bruin. The manuscript will be subjected to peer review normally by at least two referees. Submission of manuscripts on disk is preferred; these should be prepared using a standard word processing package and submitted on a 3.5 inch disk. Three printed copies are to be supplied with the disk, these matching the contents of the disk exactly.

Preparation of the Manuscript

The manuscript must be typed, double-spaced on A4 paper, with at least 3 cm margins (approximately 21 x 30 cm). Low quality dot-matrix printers should not be used. Clearly written, concise manuscripts should comprise of:

Title page (page 1)

Including, (a) a concise and informative title; (b) the full names and affiliations of all authors; (c) the full mailing address, telephone and fax numbers of the corresponding author.

Abstract and Keywords (page 2)

Including a concise and informative abstract of 400 words or less, summarizing the significant points of the paper, up to six keywords or phrases for indexing purposes.

Introduction (page 3)

The introduction should clearly state the purpose (aims and objectives) of the paper. It should include key references to appropriate work but should not be an historical or literature review.

Materials and Methods

Methods should be described in sufficient detail to allow the work to be repeated. References should be used where appropriate to avoid repetition of established methods and techniques. The origin of materials and/or suppliers of equipment should be named.

Results

Results should be presented in a logical sequence. Use tables and figures as appropriate but do not repeat information in both formats or in the text.

Discussion

The discussion should emphasise the implications and practical significance of the findings, their limitations, and relevance to previous studies.

References

References in the text should be cited as follows:

one author - Smith (1993) or (Smith, 1993)

two authors - Smith and Brown (1993) or (Smith and Brown, 1993)

three or more authors - Smith et al. (1993) or (Smith et al., 1993)

Papers by the same author(s) in the same year should be distinguished by the letters a, b, etc. References should be listed at the end of the paper giving the year of publication, title of paper, journal titles in full, volume number and first and last pages page numbers. References to books should include their edition, editor(s), publisher and place of publication.

Tables

Each table must be typed, double spaced on a separate page. They must be consecutively numbered and should have a brief informative title. Tables should be understandable without reference to the text. Explanatory footnotes should be brief, placed beneath the table and indicated by lower case letters. When using percentages, state the absolute value that corresponds to 100%. Identify all statistical methods.

Figures

All illustrations of any kind must be submitted as sequentially numbered figures, one to a page. At least one set of figures must be glossy photographs, high quality laser printed computer outputs, or originals not requiring any additional artwork or typesetting. The author(s) name and the figure numbers should be written on the reverse of the illustrations. Where symbols, arrows, numbers or letters are used to identify parts of any illustrations they must clearly be identified by a key which should normally be incorporated into the legend rather than in the figure itself. Similarly, internal scales, staining or processing of the figure must be explained where appropriate. Figure legends should be listed sequentially on a separate page.

Conventions

Use only recommended SI units. Numerals should be used for all numbers or two or more digits, and for single digits when attached to units of measure. Abbreviations should be defined in brackets after their first mention in the text in accordance with internationally agreed rules.

Proofs

Proofs will be sent to the designated corresponding author and should be returned directly to the publisher within 3 days of receipt. Alterations in proofs other than the correction of typesetter?/SPAN>s errors may cause delay and extra charges that may be made to authors.

Offprints

Authors will be given the opportunity to order offprints of their article when returning page proofs.

Copyright

Submission of a paper to Experimental and Applied Acarology will be taken to imply that it presents original unpublished work, not under consideration for publication elsewhere. By submitting a manuscript authors agree that copyright for their article is transferred to the publisher if and when the article is accepted for publication. The copyright covers the exclusive rights to reproduce and distribute the article, including reprints, photographic reproductions, microfilm or any other reproduction of similar or any nature including translations.
