About the journal

The European Journal of Mechanics A/Solids continues to publish articles in English in all areas of Solid Mechanics from the physical and mathematical basis to materials engineering, technological applications and methods of modern computational mechanics, both pure and applied research.

The following topics are covered: Mechanics of materials; thermodynamics; elasticity; plasticity; creep damage; fracture; composites and multiphase materials; micromechanics; structural mechanics; stability vibrations; wave propagation; robotics; contact; friction and wear; optimization, identification; the mechanics of rigid bodies; biomechanics.

Instructions to Authors

Aims and Scope

Papers submitted for publication must contain original research results, be clearly written and meet a high scientific standard. Although the investigations in all well-established areas of mechanical sciences are within the scope of the Journal, recent developments and innovative ideas are particularly welcome.
Mechanics is meant in its widest sense, from the physical and mathematical bases to material engineering, technological applications and all types of modern computational methods. Mathematical methods, be they deterministic or stochastic, analytical or numerical, will be more welcome provided they serve to solve clearly identifiable problems in mechanics, and provided the significance of the results is explained. Similarly, experimental papers must add physical insight to the understanding of mechanics and if possible modelling.

The EJM-A covers the whole range of mechanics:
constitutive relations for solid states: thermodynamics, elasticity, visco-elasticity, plasticity, visco-plasticity, damage, fracture with special emphasis on micro-mechanics, localization phenomena, multi-materials and composites/structural analysis by either analytical methods or computational analysis such as finite-element method, boundary integral method, including optimization, identification, and applications of vector or parallel processors/dynamics of discrete and continuous mechanical systems, particularly vibrations, stability, instabilities, wave processes, etc. mechanics of rigid bodies, kinematic, contacts, friction on wear, robotics with special emphasis on flexible robots/biomechanics/history of mechanical sciences and their applications.

General

Manuscripts submitted for publication must represent original contributions and must not have been published before (except in the form of an abstract or as part of a lecture, review or thesis). The text must be written in proper English. The authors must secure the rights of reproduction of any material that has previously been published elsewhere.

Submission of a paper implies that it has not been published previously, that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, and that if accepted it will not be published elsewhere in the same form, in English or in any other language, without the written consent of the publisher. A statement to this effect should be included in the covering letter which accompanies the manuscript.

Submission of manuscripts and diskettes

Authors who wish to have papers published in EJM should send 4 copies of the manuscript (format 21 x 29.7 cm, A4) including tables and original figures on separate sheets to the Chief Editor:
Professor Viggo Tvergaard
Department of Mechanical Engineering, Solid Mechanics
Technical University of Denmark
Nils Koppels All¨¦, Building 404
DK- 2800 Kg. Lyngby, Denmark.

Authors are also requested to provide a 3.5 inch diskette of the final version, preferably prepared using a TEX typesetting system (Plain-TEX, AMS-TEX, or LATEX). Use of macros which are not available in AMS-TEX or LATEX should be avoided. Documents prepared using WORD or other common WP systems are acceptable if TEX based systems are not available. These should be saved in RTF format.

Text

Papers, not exceeding about 20 printed pages, should be laid out with double line spacing and wide margins, on one side only of the sheet; each page should be numbered. The first page should include the main title, the running title, the family and first names of the authors, their affiliation, Tel and Fax numbers, email and postal address. The authors are responsible for proper spelling, punctuation and grammar. The style should be concise and direct. The paper should be divided into sections numbered 1.; 2.; 3. and sub-sections 1.1.; 1.2.; 1.3... Text footnotes should be avoided.

Units, mathematical symbols and formulae

The metric system is mandatory, and, wherever possible, SI units should be used.
All standard Roman and Greek characters should be typed if possible. Symbols that must be drawn by hand should be identified in the margin. Allow ample space around equations and align subscripts and superscripts clearly. Place numbers of equations referred to in the text in parentheses in the right-hand margin. Boldface symbols, for example vectors and tensors, should be underlined in the manuscript with a broken line. Please avoid possible confusion between letters and numbers (O and zero), Greek letters and Roman letters (nu and v), etc.

Abstract and Keywords

The manuscripts must include an abstract and two or three keywords, that should be suitable for separate publication in an abstract journal and should state the main results clearly; a mere table of contents should be avoided.

Tables and figures

Each table should be typed on a separate sheet as the authors expect it to appear in print. Each table must be numbered in Arabic (1, 2, ...) numerals and include a brief title, and each column should contain a heading and units. Tables should be referred to in the text.
Illustrations should be original laser printer or plotter outputs or drawn with black Indian ink on good quality tracing paper. The originals, drawings or photographs (maximum format 21 x 29.7 cm) should be submitted together with the manuscript. Each figure must be referred to in the text and its number clearly labelled on its reverse side. A set of figure captions must be provided on a separate sheet. It is preferable to put detailed information in the captions rather than on the figures. Any figure that has to be redrawn will be charged to the author. The size of symbols and lettering after reduction should not be smaller than 1.5 to 2mm. Only specially marked features in half-tone photographs can be reproduced. Colour figures carry an extra set up charge of EUR 540 plus EUR 100 per illustration or plate.

References

Only publications cited in the text should be included in the reference list. In the text, references should appear with the name of the author(s) and the year of publication in parentheses: e.g.(Smith 1995), (Davis and Johnson, 1995)and (Peters et al., 1995) if there are more than two authors. When the same reference appears twice or more it has to be cited again in the same form.
In the list of references, journal articles, papers in conference proceedings, books and theses should respectively be arranged as follows: Davis, J., 1996. Deformations of a cylindrical tube. PhD thesis, Technical University, Berlin.
Davis., Johnson, H., 1993-a Viscoelastic behaviour of composites. Eur. J. Mech. A/Solids 14, 735-746.
Davis, J., Johnson, H., 1993-b. Waves and turbulence, in: Schmidt, H. (Ed.), Proc. Euromech. Symp. on Fluid Mechanics. Gauthier-Villars, Paris, pp. 341-372.
Davis, J., Johnson, H., 1994. Modern Mechanics. Gauthier-Villars, Paris.
References should be listed in alphabetical order without ordering numbers. Two or more publications by the same authors in the same year should be distinguished by adding a lower case letter to the year. Standard abbreviations of the journals' names should be used. Titles of the papers in journals are required as well as first and last page numbers.

Proofs and reprints

Specify the name and complete address of the corresponding author to whom the page proofs should be sent. The author is requested to read the proofs thoroughly, including equations and tables. These should be returned within two days.
There are no page charges and 25 reprints will be supplied free of charge. Additional copies may be ordered when returning the corrected proofs.
