About the journal
European Journal of Cell Biology, a journal of experimental cell investigation, publishes original papers on the structure, function and macromolecular organization of cells and cell components focussing on cellular dynamics, motility and differentiation, particularly if related to cellular biochemistry, molecular biology, immunology, neurobiology, and developmental biology. Manuscripts describing significant technical advances are also published as well as papers dealing with biomedical issues of general interest to cell biologists. Finally, contributions addressing cell biological problems in procaryotes and plants are considered. Review articles and minireviews are, as a rule, invited by the editors.
Instructions to Authors
Papers should be submitted to:
Editorial Office European Journal of Cell Biology, Dr. Jutta Küster Max-Planck-Institut für biophysikalische Chemie, Abteilung Neurobiologie, Am Faßberg, D-37077 Göttingen/Germany, Phone: ++ 49 (0) 551 201 1626, Fax: ++ 49 (0) 551 201 1074, e-mail: EJCB@mpibpc.mpg.de
The European Journal of Cell Biology, a Journal of experimental cell investigation, publishes papers on the structure, function and macromolecular organization of cells and cell components. We encourage contributions focussing on cellular dynamics, motility and differentiation, particularly if related to cellular biochemistry, molecular biology, immunology, neurobiology, and developmental biology. Manuscripts describing significant technical advances are also welcome. In addition, papers dealing with biomedical issues of general interest to cell biologists will be published. Finally, contributions addressing cell biological problems in procaryotes and plants will be considered.
Manuscripts should be written in concise and grammatically correct English, their length being the minimum required for precision in describing the experiments and clarity in interpreting them.
Short Communications of no more than five to ten pages of double-spaced typescript, including figures and tables, will also be accepted.
Review articles and minireviews are, as a rule, invited by the editors. However, potential authors may also propose such articles in a letter comprising a brief abstract of the review.
For uniformity in spelling, the usage in the Merriam-Webster dictionaries should be followed. Authors whose English is not native are requested to have their manuscripts checked by colleagues whose mother tongue is English. Particular attention is requested for the Introduction and the Discussion sections stating the novelty and significance of the observations. Standard nomenclature should be used according to general agreement, for example, the recom- mendations of the IUPAC-IUB Combined Commission on Biochemical Nomenclature.
Non-standard abbreviations should be spelt in full when used for the first time in the text.
Copyright: With the submission of a manuscript the authors declare that the submitted work has not been published before (except as part of a thesis or lecture note or report, or in the form of an abstract); that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere; that its publication has been approved by all co-authors as well as by the authorities at the institute where the work has been carried out; that written permission of copyright holders is obtained by the authors for material used from other copyrighted sources; that, if and when the manuscript is accepted for publication, the authors hand over the transferable copyrights of the accepted manuscript to the publisher; and that the manuscript or parts thereof will thus not be published elsewhere in any language without the consent of the copyright holder. Copyrights include, without spatial or timely limitation, the mechanical, electronic and visual reproduction and distribution; electronic storage and retrieval; and all other forms of electronic publication or any other types of publication including all subsidiary rights.
To ensure a rapid review process, manuscripts should be submitted to the editorial offices in quadruplicate, with four sets of figures (three sets for reviewing and one top quality set for reproduction). The text should be typed in double-line spacing with generous margins. Usually a paper is read by two referees. Authors may also suggest expert scientists as possible reviewers. In such case the full addresses including fax and phone numbers should be provided.
Papers are published without page charge in due course after final acceptance. Color plates can be printed only if part of the costs are covered by the author (approx. DM 1000,-- per figure). In cases with a greater number of figures please ask for cost estimate.
Arrangement of the manuscript
The title page should include: title of paper, first name(s) written in full, surname(s) of authors, laboratory or institution, name of town and country. Name, address as well as fax and phone numbers of the authors responsible for correspondence or reprint requests should be indicated in footnote 1. A short running title of no more than 40 to 50 characters as well as a list of abbreviations (if appropriate) in alphabetical order should be added. Each paper should begin with an abstract (20 - 30 lines), preceded by a maximum of 5 key words. Abbreviations and quotations of articles within the abstract should be avoided. If an article is mentioned, the full citation should be given.
The text should be arranged in the following main sections: - Abstract - Introduction - Materials and methods - Results - Discussion - Acknowledgements - References
In Materials and methods, the full address (if USA, also US state) of suppliers of chemicals and equipments should be given. All donators should be named with their full affiliations.
Figures and tables should be numbered consecutively in their order of appearance in the text.
New nucleotide or amino acid sequences to be published must be deposited at an appropriate standard data base (DDBJ/EMBL/GenBank/SWISS-PROT) and the accession number must be mentioned in the text.
References to literature should be given in the text by authors?name(s) and year. If there is more than one article by the same author(s) per year, use a and b after the year of publication. For two authors, both should be named (e.g. Smith and Miller, 1998); for more than two authors, use first authors´s name followed by et al. The list of references should be given in alphabetical order. References to "unpublished data", "personal communication", "manuscript in preparation", "manuscript submitted" should be made parenthetically in the text and not included in the list of references. Accepted and "in press" papers can be included in the list of references only by quoting the rele- vant journal and stating the month of publication. Example for quotations: a) from journals: Koch, P.-J., Walsh, M.J., Schmelz, M., Goldschmidt, M.D., Zimbelmann, R., Franke, W.W. (1990): Identification of desmoglein, a constitutive desmosomal glycoprotein, as a member of the cadherin family of cell adhesion molecules. Eur. J. Cell Biol. 53, 1-12. b) from books: Tartakoff, A.M.(1987): The Secretory and Endocytic Paths. Mechanism and specificity of vesicular traffic in the cell cytoplasm. John Wiley & Sons, New York, pp. 7-39. Lucocq, J.M., Roth, J. (1985): Colloidal gold and colloidal silver-metallic markers for light microscopical histochemistry. In: G.R. Bullock, P. Petrusz (eds.): Techniques in Immunocytochemistry. Academic Press, London, Vol. 3, pp. 203-236. Number and size of all figures, graphs and diagrams must be limited to the essential minimum. Four sets should be submitted of all figures. For reproduction, the top quality set (originals) should be mounted on thin cardboard. The original set of figures must be ready for reproduction. Micrographs should contain a bar defining a dimension (µm) which is explained in the figure legend. Maximum size of figures: width 17.7 cm, height 23.2 cm. Preferentially, figures should be designed to match either one column (8.6 cm width) or two columns (17.7 cm width). All illustrations should have clear letterings in suitable sizes. Parts of a mounted plate should be designated "a, b, c", etc. in lowercase letters. Common symbols such as arrows, arrowheads, asterisks, etc. should be used in appropriate sizes on the figures.
All figures (with Arabic numerals) and tables (with Roman numerals) are to be mentioned in the text. Legends for figures should be written on separate pages at the end of the manuscipt. For tables, a headline and a short explanatory footnote should be provided. All abbreviations and symbols used in figures and tables must be explained in the legends.
Author's disks with the text of accepted manuscripts are welcome. The disk should be labeled with the number of the manuscript, first author's name, and an indication of the operating system (MS-DOS or Macintosh) and the word processing program used for preparing the text.
Proofs of the article will be sent to the authors in duplicate. One copy should be corrected (using proofreader's marks) and returned to the publisher (a photocopy of the corrections should be made and retained by the authors). No alterations should be made to proofs other than those needed to correct typographical errors. Costs for extensive additional alterations will be charged to the authors.
Reprints: 25 reprints will be supplied free of charge. Additional copies can be ordered with return of galley proofs.
