Instructions to Authors

DOCUMENT SUBMISSION

The European Heart Journal has converted as of October 1st 2002 to a web-based submission and review system. Online submission will reduce the manuscript processing time. This should shorten the average time that authors have to wait for a decision.

Should you presently be unable to take advantage of online submission and review, please fax the Editorial office on (+32)16 342 119 for further instructions.

Authors may send queries concerning the submission process to help@eurheartj.org. For enquiries about the review process and journal procedures, the editorial office can be contacted at editorialoffice@eurheartj.org. As a matter of policy, the status of documents will not be discussed over the phone.

For online submission:

Please click on the "Submissions" button on the homepage of the European Heart Journal (www.eurheartj.org). You will be redirected to our online submission system. First time users must click "Register" on the navigation menu at the top of the screen. The system will send an automatic e-mail with your user name and password. Detailed guidelines for authors and reviewers are available at the submission site.

For Fast Track:

(1) Authors must send their manuscript by e-mail to: fasttrack@eurheartj.org, ensuring that the manuscript adheres to the European Heart Journal's Instructions for Authors. The accompanying covering letter should detail why the Authors think the manuscript would be suitable for fast track publication.
(2) The Editorial Office will communicate whether fast track assessment is appropriate within 48 hours. If the Editors decide not to accept fast track assessment, the paper may be considered for the normal review process. Authors will also have the opportunity to withdraw their submission. Please note that fast track assessment does not in any way guarantee acceptance of the manuscript.
(3) For manuscripts entering fast-track assessment, an Editorial decision will be made within 5 working days. If provisionally accepted, a revised manuscript must be returned to the Editorial Office within 48 hours.
(4) If the manuscript is accepted for publication, the Editors will aim to publish it online 10 days after acceptance and in print within the following 6 weeks, provided galley proofs are returned within 48 hours.

GENERAL GUIDELINES:

Clinical studies based on either normals or patients will appear in this category. Case reports will not be accepted.

b. Pre-clinical papers

The results of pre-clinical research will be considered for publication provided they have an obvious clinical relevance.

c. Clinical reviews

The Journal will publish a limited number of scholarly, comprehensive reviews whose aims are to summarize and critically evaluate research in the field addressed and identify future implications.

d. Editorials

All editorials should have a brief unstructured abstract and should be limited to 1500 words.

e. Correspondence

Letters to the Editor must not exceed 500 words and should focus on a specific article which was published in The European Heart Journal within the preceding 12 weeks. This category is intended for striking, illustrative, or rare clinical images or pictures such as electrocardiograms, echocardiograms, scans, x rays or pathology specimens. Images in this category will be published on the cover of the Journal. They should be submitted with the names of no more than 3 authors. The clinical message contained in the picture should be amplified in a 250 word description which will be included with the image (without references).

MANUSCRIPT FORMATTING GUIDELINES

1. General remarks

The European Heart Journal is an official Journal of the European Society of Cardiology. Papers submitted to this journal which do not adhere to the Instructions for Authors will be returned for appropriate revision to be in line with the Instructions for Authors. They may then be re-submitted.

All manuscripts correctly submitted to the European Heart Journal will first be reviewed by the Editors. Some manuscripts will be returned to authors at this stage if the paper is deemed inappropriate for publication in the European Heart Journal or if the paper does not meet submission requirements. All papers considered suitable by the Editors to progress further in the review process will undergo appropriate peer review. Finally, all papers provisionally accepted for publication will undergo a detailed statistical review.

Submitted manuscripts may not contain more than 5000 words. The word count will include References, Figure Legends and Tables. The number of Tables, Figures and References should be appropriate to the manuscript content and should not be excessive.

All manuscripts should be divided into the following sections: (1) Title page, (2) Abstracts and Keywords, (3) Introduction, (4) Methods, (5) Results, (6) Discussion, (7) Acknowledgements, (8) References, (9) Appendices, (10) Text tables, (11) Figure legends should follow.

3. Abstracts

All abstracts may not contain more than 200 words and should be submitted as a separate file. The abstract should be formatted with the following heading: (1) Aims, (2) Methods and Results, (3) Conclusion.

4. Spelling, units and abbreviations

Oxford English spelling rather than American is preferred. Abbreviations other than standard SI units of measurement should not be used.

5. Keywords

A maximum of 6 keywords may be submitted.

6. Figures

Figures should be limited to the number necessary for clarity and must not duplicate data given in tables or in the text. They must be suitable for high quality reproduction.

Electronically submitted figures should be in high resolution and in one of the following formats: tiff, bitmap (.bmp), jpeg (.jpg), portable data format (.pdf) or postscript (.ps or .eps). Where there is difficulty submitting the figures electronically, they may be sent, separately from the manuscript, by post to:

The Figures should be no larger than 12,5 x 18 cm (5 x 7 inches). Drawings should be in ink and on good quality paper. Photographic prints should be sharp, with strong contrast and on glossy paper. Half-tone illustration should be sent as black-and-white prints on glossy paper, with as much contrast as possible. Identify each figure on the back with a figure number, the electronic submission number, the name of the leading author, the title of the manuscript and the top side of the figure.

Please note that each figure should have a legend, but legends will not necessarily appear on the same page with the figure. Legends should be grouped under the heading ?Legends? on a separate sheet at the end of the manuscript.

Colour illustrations are acceptable but the authors will be expected to bear a proportion of the printing cost.

Colour illustrations online
If, together with your accepted article, you submit usable colour figures (original photographs, high-quality computer prints or transparencies, close to the size expected in publication, or as 35 mm slides; polaroid colour prints are not suitable) then Elsevier will ensure, at no additional charge, that these figures will appear in colour in the electronic version of the journal. For further information on the preparation of electronic artwork, please see http://authors.elsevier.com/artwork.

The review process will not start until all Figures are received

7. Tables

Titles of journals should be abbreviated in accordance with Index Medicus (see list printed annually in the January issue of Index Medicus). If a journal is not listed in Index Medicus then its name should be written out in full.

CONFLICT OF INTEREST

At submission, the editors require Authors to disclose any financial associations that might pose a conflict of interest in connection with the submitted article. All sources of funding for the work should be acknowledged in a footnote on the title page, as should all the institutional affiliations of the authors (including corporate appointments). Other kinds of associations, such as consultancies, stock ownership or other equity interest or patent-licensing arrangements should be disclosed to the editors in the cover letter at the time of the of submission. If no conflict of interest exists, please state this in the cover letter and on the title page.

Papers will not be published until the Editorial Office has received this faxed letter.

If illustrations or figures are to be duplicated from previously published work, written permission must be obtained both from the publisher and the author, and a credit line giving the source added to the relevant Figure Legend. If text material (250 to 300 words) is to be reproduced from published sources, written permission is required from both publisher and author. For shorter quotations, it is sufficient to add a bibliographic credit. The Letters containing the permission for the reproduction of either text or illustrations must accompany the manuscript. If you have been unable to obtain permission, please indicate this.

PROOFS

Page proofs will be sent to the corresponding Author. Significant further alterations instigated at this stage by the author will be charged to the author.

It is the intention of the Editor to review, correct and publish your article as quickly possible. To achieve this it is important that all of your corrections are returned to us in one all-inclusive mail or fax. Subsequent additional corrections will not be possible, so please ensure that your first communication is complete.

OFF-PRINTS

Reprints can be ordered at proof stage when a scale of costs will be supplied.
