Manuscripts should be submitted to one editor only

General. The author(s) transfer(s) the copyright to his/her/their article to Steinkopff Verlag effective if and when the article is accepted for publication. The copyright covers the exclusive and unlimited rights to reproduce and distribute the article in any form of reproduction (printing, electronic media or any other form); it also covers translation rights for all languages and countries. For U.S. authors the copyright is transferred to the extent transferable. The author(s) guarantee(s) that the manuscript will not be published elsewhere in any other language without the consent of the copyright holders.

Papers must be written in standard grammatical English; this is the responsibility of the author(s). They must present new results and be of scientific value. Contributions should not exceed 8 printed pages (equal to 24 typewritten A4 pages, averaging 33 lines per page and 65 typewriter strokes per line) and should not include more than 8 figures. The space occupied by figures must be included when calculating the length of a paper.

Authors who have written their manuscript using a PC word processor are asked to provide the file on diskette in addition to the printout after the manuscript has been accepted for publication. The file should be compiled in accordance with the technical instructions for manuscripts submitted on diskette (see this or previous issues of the journal, or contact the production department).

The paper must be in its final form, so as to exclude the need for corrections in proof. A charge will be made for changes introduced after the manuscript has been set in type.

Short communications presenting new or preliminary results of special interest will be considered for rapid publication and should consist of no more than 1000 words (4 manuscript pages) plus 1 figure or table.

The subject matter should be defined in a few sentences and earlier work on the subject referred to by citing recent bibliographies (in monographs, handbooks, etc.). The reader should be able to follow the method by which the results were obtained, but there is no value in detailed descriptions unless they constitute a genuine innovation.

Mere confirmation of established findings is to be strictly avoided. Experiments with no significant results, if included at all, should be dealt with only briefly. Case histories and examination reports should be included only if necessary for defining the subject matter and are to be presented as concisely as possible.

1. The title page should comprise: (1) a short, clear title, (2) the first name and surname of all authors, (3) the name and address of the clinic or institute where the work was carried out, (4) the footnotes referring to the title, and (5) the address to which proofs are to be sent.

To facilitate communication between the authors, editors and publisher, the author should furnish a telephone and fax number and an e-mail address.

2. Each work must include a short Abstract of the essential results (not more than 200 words).

3. Key words. Following the abstract not more than 5 key words should be supplied. They should be representative of the content and be characteristic of the terminology used within the particular field of study. Terms and phrases from Index Medicus (Medical Subject Headings) are recommended.

4. Footnotes in the text should be numbered consecutively; footnotes to tables should be designated by superscript lower-case letters.

5. References. All references cited in the text, but only those, are to be listed at the end of the paper in alphabetical order under the first author's name. They should be typed in double-line spacing. Chronological order is used for more than one work by the same author or team of authors. Works by two authors should also be listed alphabetically according to the second author's name. Journal titles should be abbreviated according to Index Medicus. When styling references, the following examples should be followed.

Beckmann H (1986) Investigations of the cholinergic-adrenergic balance in affective disorders. In: Hippius H, Klerman GL, Matussek N (eds) New results in depression research. Springer, Berlin Heidelberg New York, pp 196-204
Ernst C, Angst J (1983) Birth order. Its influence on personality. Springer, Berlin Heidelberg New York
Steinhausen HC, Göbel D (1988) The relative importance of history and symptoms in child psychiatric diagnosis. Eur Arch Psychiatry Neurol Sci 237:156-160
Citations in the text should either be by numerals in square brackets referring to an alphabetically ordered, numbered list, or by author and date in parentheses. Either style is acceptable if used consistently throughout the paper. In the latter system, if there are two authors, both should be named (e.g., Agar and Douglas 1955); if a work with more than two authors is cited, only the first author's name plus "et al." need be given (e.g., Komor et al. 1979); if there is more than one reference by the same author or team of authors in the same year, then a, b, c, etc. should be added to the year both in the text and the list of references.

6. Tables should be submitted on separate sheets. Numerical data given in graphs and tables must not duplicate each other.

7. Figures. The number and size of the illustrations must be kept to the minimum required for clarification of the text. Previously published figures cannot be accepted. Explanations of figures furnished as legends should not be repeated in the text.
Color illustrations will be accepted up to the discretion of the editors/the publisher.
All figures, whether photographs, graphs or diagrams, should be numbered consecutively throughout and submitted on separate sheets. The layouts or single figures may either match the width of the column (86 mm) or the width of the entire page (176 mm). The maximum length of the layout is 236 mm including the legend printed at its foot. Several figures should be grouped into a plate on one page.

Line drawings. Good-quality prints or laser-printed computer drawings are acceptable. The inscriptions must be clearly legible. Letters 2 mm high are recommended.

Halftone illustrations. Please submit well-contrasted photographic prints, trimmed at right angles and in the desired final size. Inscriptions should be about 3 mm high. Please mark the desired positions of figures and tables in the margin of the manuscript.

8. Legends. Figure legends should be sufficient to allow each figure to be understood without reference to the text. Each figure should have a short title followed by a concise description. All abbreviations and symbols appearing in the figure must be explained in the legend. Remarks like "for explanation (or details) see text" should be avoided.

9. Offprints Offprints may be ordered at cost price when the page proofs are returned. If offprints are ordered it is possibele to receive pdf data of your article via e-mail. Steinkopff will supply the corresponding author with max. five free copies of the relevant issue.
