About the journal
Enzyme and Microbial Technology covers both basic and applied aspects in the use of enzymes, microbes and cells of mammalian or plant origin. This is the only journal that offers a truly unique forum for all inter-disciplinary elements of biotechnology: genetics, microbiology, enzymology, biochemistry, chemistry, agriculture and food science, fermentation, and biochemical and chemical engineering. Economic, regulatory and legal issues of processes and products are also covered.

Instructions to Authors
Notes for Authors
Enzyme and Microbial Technology is an international monthly journal of biotechnology. The Editors welcome contributions relevant to both basis and applied aspects of the use of enzymes and microorganisms (including bacteria, fungi, algae, protozoa, viruses, animal cells and plant cells).
Contributions are classified as Research Papers, Rapid Communications orReviews.
Research Papers should be a record of original research and should not normally exceed 6000 words in length.
Rapid Communications should be short accounts of research of unusual urgency and significance and should not exceed a total of eight manuscript pages, including tables and figures. A letter stating the reasons for wishing the submission to be considered as a Rapid Communication must accompany the manuscript. At the discretion of the Editors, manuscripts in this category will receive accelerated handling. Authors are urged to ensure careful adherence to the guidelines for the preparation of manuscripts set out below since manuscripts requiring extensive editing or modification cannot be considered for expedited handling.
Reviews are normally invited by the Editors but unsolicited review articles of up to 6000 words are welcome. Authors should send a brief outline to one of the Editors before the manuscript is drafted.
Only work not previously published or under consideration for publication elsewhere will be accepted. Include a statement in the cover letter accompanying the manuscript, signed by all authors, that the contents have not been published elsewhere and the paper is not being submitted elsewhere. The manuscript must be accompanied by copies of all relevant papers published elsewhere by the authors and by copies of relevant manuscripts that are in press or under editorial consideration. If any tables or illustrations have been published elsewhere the editorial office must be informed so that permission to reproduce can be obtained from the original publishers. All multi-authored manuscripts must contain a letter of submission, signed by all named authors, signifying that they were a contributor to the work described and that they consent to the paper being submitted for consideration for publication. Page charges are not levied by the journal.
Refereeing
All contributions are studied by referees whose names are not normally disclosed to authors. On acceptance for publication papers are subject to editorial amendment. Authors are asked to transfer copyright of their papers to the publisher, Elsevier Science, Inc., in accordance with requirements of the US Copyright Act, 1976. Authors are solely responsible for the factual accuracy of their papers.
Suggestions for potential reviewers Authors are invited to provide the names, addresses, phone numbers and e-mail addresses of up to six potential reviewers. It would not be appropriate to nominate individuals that have had any input into the manuscripts submitted or any recent collaboration with the authors. The Editors may or may not take these suggestions into account during the reviewing process.
In order to speed up the refereeing process, the Editor requests that you supply the names and addresses of four individuals whom you consider suitable to review your manuscript. It will then be at the Editor's discretion as to whether or not he approaches the referees recommended by you.
Manuscripts
Three copies of the entire manuscript, including tables and figures, must be submitted. Manuscripts should be typed on only one side of the paper (A4, quarto or 8.5" x 11") in double spacing throughout with a margin of 30mm at the top and bottom on both sides. Papers must be arranged in the following order of presentation: title of paper; names of the authors; address of the place at which the work was carried out; a self-contained synopsis of the paper (100-200 words in length); tables; an abbreviated title for use as a running headline; captions to figures (on a separate sheet of paper). Submissions not conforming to these guidelines may be returned to the authors.
Illustrations
It is the author's responsibility to provide original camera-ready artwork for all illustrations, both line and halftone. Upon request, all original art will be returned to the author upon publication.
For line art, submit either original drawings, PMTs (bromide, stats, prints), or high-quality tear sheets from another publication. Photocopies are not acceptable. Original drawings should be done in black ink on white paper, artist's board, or vellum, and have typeset or professionally lettered labels in Helvetica or a comparable sans serif typeface. Typewritten labels are notacceptable. Most illustrations will be reduced to the single column width of approximately 8 point type. Each piece of line art should be carefully labeled with the author's name and figure number, i.e., "Jones et al., Figure 3."
For halftones, submit glossy black and white prints. Photocopies or tear sheets are not acceptable. Each print should be labeled on the back with the author's name, figure number, and an arrow indicating which edge is up if there is any ambiguity. Write on the label before placing it on the photograph; writing on the back of the photograph can leave indentations that will show when printed.
Figure captions should be typed on a separate sheet of manuscript paper, clearly labeled, but not attached to the artwork.
Two copies of all artwork should be supplied in addition to the originals.
Tables
Tables should be typed on separate sheets together with a suitable caption at the top of each table. Column headings should bekept as brief as possible, and units of measure indicated in parentheses. Footnotes to tables should be placed at the bottom of the table to which they refer.
References
Number all references to the literature in a single sequence in the order in which they appear in the text, using Arabic numerals. Full citation should be given for all authors. Titles of articles, as well as titles of chapters in books, should be included. Abbreviate journal titles in accordance with Bibliographic Guide for Editors and Authors (American Chemical Society).
References should take the following form: 1. Rijken DC, Hoylaerts J, and Collen D. Fibrinolytic properties of one-chain and two-chain human extrinsic (tissue-type) plasminogen activator. J. Biol. Chem. 1982, 257, 2920-2925
2. Thomas K, Gimenez-Gallego G, DiSalvo J, Linemeyer D, Kelly L, Menke J, Mellin T and Gusch R. Structure and activities of acidic fibroblast growth factor. In: Angiogenesis Mechanisms and Pathobiology Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, Cold Spring Harbor, NY, 1987, 9-12
Units, Abbreviations and Nomenclature
Si units should be used: the foot-pound-second (fps) or other equivalent should be given in parentheses afterwards if necessary. On graphs, if values are recorded in non-Si units then additional scales in Si units should be used. If a large number of symbols is used, it is helpful if authors submit a list of these symbols and their meanings. Biochemical nomenclature should conform to that recommended by the IUPAC-IUB Commission, and enzymes should be given their EC numbers and systematic names.
Proofs
Authors are responsible for ensuring that all manuscripts (whether original or revised) are accurately typed before final submission. Two sets of proofs will be sent to the authors before publication, one of which should be returned promptly by air express. The publishers reserve the right to charge for any changes made at the proof state (other than printer's errors) since the insertion or deletion of a single word may necessitate the resetting of whole paragraphs.
Authors can keep track of the progress of their accepted article, and set up e-mail alerts informing them of changes to their manuscript's status, by using the "Track a Paper" feature of Elsevier's Author Gateway.
For other questions, please send e-mail to: authorsupport@elsevier.ie
Reprints
A total of 25 reprints of each paper will be provided free of charge to the author(s). Additional copies can be ordered at prices shown on the reprint order form which will be sent to the author upon receipt of the accepted manuscript at Elsevier.
Submission
Three copies of the complete manuscript and illustrations should be sent to one of the Editors. Please allow sufficient time for the manuscripts to reach the editor's office before sending e-mail inquiries.
