About the journal
|
| Aims and Scope |
The journal publishes original articles on all aspects of fish ecology and fishery sciences in lakes, rivers and estuaries, including ecologically oriented studies of behaviour, genetics and physiology and the conservation, development and management of recreational and commercial fisheries. Papers dealing with the life stages of anadromous and catadromous species in estuaries and inshore coastal zones are also published if they contribute to the general understanding of fish biology. Theoretical papers and studies of impact assessment and modelling are published if they generate testable hypotheses about real systems (fish communities, populations and/or species) or if published data are re-analysed to produce novel conclusions or syntheses. Research papers, short communications and review articles are published based on their scientific content. Occasionally, the proceedings of conferences and symposia are published if they are relevant and timely. Each article contains an extended abstract in Spanish.

Instructions to Authors
Authors submitting a paper do so on the understanding that the work has not been published before, is not being considered for publication elsewhere and has been read and approved by all authors. The submission of the manuscript by the authors means that the authors automatically agree to assign exclusive copyright to Blackwell Munksgaard if and when the manuscript is accepted for publication. The work shall not be published elsewhere in any language without the written consent of the publisher. The articles published in this journal are protected by copyright, which covers translation rights and the exclusive right to reproduce and distribute all of the articles printed in the journal. No material published in the journal may be stored on microfilm or videocassettes or in electronic databases and the like without the written permission of the publisher. A copyright assignment form must be submitted along with your article. The form is available here as a PDF.
Preference is given to articles of not more than 10 printed pages. Submit the manuscript in English. Provide your manuscript on one newly formatted 3.5-inch floppy disk containing an exact copy of the manuscript (in doc or rtf format) with tables and figures in a separate file; 3 printed, double-spaced copies including figures and tables must accompany the disk. Wherever possible, please supply electronic versions of your figures. These should be supplied as EPS or TIFF. Each complete figure should be placed in a separate file. Avoid using tints if possible; if shading is essential to the understanding of the figure, try to make it coarse. Information on our digital illustration standards can be obtained here. The paper manuscript and the file on the disk must be the same. Label the disk clearly with the journal name, author and title, file content, computer system (DOS, Windows or Macintosh), word processor (Word, WordPerfect etc.) and version used. Do not convert your manuscript to ASCII format. Include only the files corresponding to the manuscript. Type your manuscript on one side of non-absorbent ISO A4 paper with wide margins. Send the manuscript to:

Short communications - Short communications, normally limited to 3 printed pages (including tables and figures), are published rapidly if they are based on work of special importance or impact.
Crossheads - Use no more than 3 levels of crossheads, clearly indicating the level of each.
Spanish summary - Include an extended summary concisely stating the scope of the work and its principal findings. It must be fully intelligible without reference to the main text except that references to figures and tables are allowed. Prepare the summary in Spanish if possible; otherwise submit it in English and the editors will arrange translation.
Title page - The title page should contain the title and authors names, telephone and telefax numbers and full postal address, including any postcode. Provide a short title to be used as a running headline, up to six keywords and an abstract no longer than 150 words.
Introduction - State the purpose, give only strictly pertinent references and do not review the subject extensively.
Material and methods and study area - Material and methods should be concise but allow confirmation of observations and repetition of the study. The study area may be described under a separate heading before Material and methods.
Results - Present your results in a logical sequence in the text, tables and figures. Do not repeat in the text all data in the tables and figures; emphasise or summarise only important observations.
Discussion - Summarise the findings without repeating in detail the data presented in Results. Relate your observations to other relevant studies; point out the implications of the results and their limitations and place them in the context of other work.
Acknowledgements - Acknowledge only people who have substantively contributed to the study and sources of financial support.
References - Text citations should quote the surnames of the authors in one of two ways: 1) with the year in parentheses: "Fox (1991) has shown ..." 2) with the names and year in parentheses: "According to recent findings (Fox 1991), ..." For text citations with 2 authors, use both surnames separated by &. For 3 or more authors, use the first surname plus et al. For citations of several articles by the same authors with the same year, place a, b, c, etc. after the year. Include only references cited in the text. Check that the text citations correspond exactly with the reference list. Verify the references against the original documents. Do not abbreviate the titles of journals. Do not include unpublished material, except theses, in the references; note them as unpublished data or personal communications in the text. List the references in alphabetical order at the end of the manuscript. For publications with one author, arrange them chronologically. For 2 authors, arrange alphabetically and then chronologically. For 3 or more authors, arrange chronologically. Examples Heggenes, J. & Traaen, T. 1988. Daylight responses to overhead cover in stream channels for fry of four salmonid species. Holarctic Ecology 11: 194-201. Tesch, F.-W. 1977. The eel. Biology and management of anguillid eels. London: Chapman & Hall. xii + 434 pp. Le Cren, E.D. 1969. Estimates of fish populations and production in small streams in England. In: Northcote, T.G., ed. Symposium on salmon and trout in streams. H.R. MacMillan lectures in fisheries. Vancouver: University of British Columbia, pp. 269-280. Cunjak, R.A. 1986. The winter biology of stream salmonids. Ph.D. thesis. Waterloo, Ontario: University of Waterloo. 160 pp.
Scientific names - Cite the complete scientific name (genus, species and authority) for every organism at first mention. The generic name may then be abbreviated as an initial capital except if intervening references to other genera would cause confusion. Common names of organisms must be accompanied by the correct scientific name at first mention. Latin names should be italicised (or underlined).
Abbreviations and units - Give the full name of abbreviations at first mention. Invent new abbreviations only for unwieldy names mentioned frequently. Identify abbreviations in the title and abstract and use them sparingly in the introduction and discussion. Use SI and metric units. Use no roman numerals. In decimals use the decimal point, not the comma.
Tables - Number tables consecutively in Arabic numerals following their order in the text. Type each table on a separate sheet and provide a title that makes the table self-explanatory. Give due regard to the proportions of the printed page. Indicate the approximate location desired in the text.
Illustrations - Number all figures consecutively with Arabic numerals. Identify each with a label indicating the author's name at the top. Figures should clarify the text and must be professionally drawn. The details must be large enough to retain clarity after reduction. Half-tones should exhibit high contrast. High-quality (laser or equivalent) computer-generated figures are acceptable. Select photographs only to illustrate something that cannot otherwise be adequately shown. Photographs should be original half-plate, glossy, black-and-white prints. Type the legends on a separate page at the end of the manuscript. Give due regard to the proportions of the printed page. Indicate the approximate location desired in the text.
