About the journal
|
| Aims and Scope |
|
Ecological Research has been published in English by the Ecological Society of Japan since 1986 in order to promote internationally the results of research in ecology. The Journal publishes peer-reviewed, original research papers, critical reviews, technical reports, and notes and comments covering all aspects of ecology. Manuscripts are judged on the basis of their contribution of original data and ideas or interpretation. All articles are peer-reviewed by at least two researchers expert in the field of the submitted paper. Manuscripts are edited where necessary for clarity and economy. Manuscripts submitted must not have been published, accepted for publication, or be under consideration elsewhere. All papers accepted become the copyright of the Society.
The publication of this journal is supported in part by a Grantin-Aid for Publishing Research Results (Scientific Periodical) from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. | |

Instructions to Authors
Original research papers, critical reviews, technical reports, notes and comments dealing with any aspects of pure or applied ecology are considered for publication in Ecological Research. Papers accepted for publication become the copyright of the Ecological Society of Japan.
Manuscripts
Three copies of the manuscript, each including all tables and labelled figures, should be sent to:
Seigo Higashi The Editor Ecological Research Graduate School of Environmental Earth Science Hokkaido University Sapporo 060-0810 Japan
The entire manuscript, including references, should be typed double-spaced on one side only of the paper with ample margins. Manuscripts must be written in English. All pages should be numbered consecutively in the top right-hand corner. The sequence of material in the manuscript should be as follows:
Title Page The title page must bear the title of the contribution, name(s) and address(es) of the author(s). The full postal address, telephone and facsimile number and email address of the author who will check the proofs and receive correspondence should be included, as well as the present address of any author if different from that where the work was carried out. The main title should, where possible, contain the major key words used in the body of the paper; a short running title no longer than 40 characters and spaces should also be provided.
Abstract A brief but informative Abstract not exceeding 250 words for original and review papers and 100 words for technical reports, notes and comments should be included, followed by up to five key words.
Text A range of three different headings are available.
Acknowledgements These may be to persons who assisted in the study and to grant-giving bodies. Please do not acknowledge anonymous reviewers.
References References should be made by giving the author's name with the year of publication in parentheses. If there are two authors, within the text use 'and', but within parentheses use the ampersand (&). When reference is made to a work by three or more authors, the first name followed by et al. should be used on all occasions. If several papers by the same authors and from the same year are cited, a, b, c etc. should be inserted after the year of publication. References should be listed in alphabetical order at the end of the paper in the following form:
C. J. & McKinley D. (1974) Urban Ecology. McGraw-Hill, New York.
Endler J. A. (1991) Interactions between predators and prey. In: Behavioural Ecology (eds J. R. Krebs & N. B. Davies) pp. 169-196. Blackwell Scientific Publications, Oxford.
Boecklen W. J., Mopper S. & Price P. C. (1991) Size and shape analysis of mineral resources in arroyo willow and their relation to sawfly densities. Ecological Research 6: 317-331.
Titles of journals should not be abbreviated.
Appendices These should be placed at the end of the paper, numbered in Roman numerals and referred to in the text. If written by a person other than the author of the main text, the writer's name should be included below the title.
Manuscripts which do not conform to these requirements may be returned to the author for amendment.
Abbreviations and units
SI units (metre, kilogram etc.) should be used wherever possible. Statistics and measurements should always be given in figures; that is, 10 mm, except where the number begins the sentence. When the number does not refer to a unit of measurement, it is spelt out, except where the number is greater than nine. Confusing mathematical notation, and particularly subscripts and superscripts, should be avoided; negative exponents are acceptable if they are used consistently.
Use only standard abbreviations. The word 'Figure' should be shortened to 'Fig.' unless starting a sentence.
Tables
The presentation of the same data in both graphical and tabular form should be avoided. Tables must be typed on separate sheets. They should be numbered consecutively with Arabic numbers and each should bear a short title. Column headings should be brief, with units of measurement in parentheses. Vertical lines should not be used to separate columns.
Illustrations
All illustrations (including photographs) are classified as figures and should be numbered consecutively.
Figures should be professionally drawn and lettered. High contrast photographic copies of the original figures are preferred. Figures should be drawn or grouped so that they will fit within column width (79 mm) or the full text width (165 mm) and require no more than a 50% reduction in size.
Bar scales for maps and photographs are preferred to numerical scales.
Authors are asked to send all original illustrations to the Editor after the manuscript has been accepted. Please send three copies of the illustrations when the manuscript is submitted. Good quality glossy prints of photographs should be sent mounted, with lettering added. Each figure should be identified by its number, name of author(s) and the top of the figure should be marked. Do not write on the back of figures and do not use paper clips. Legends should be self-explanatory and typed on a separate sheet.
The approximate positions of tables and figures should be indicated in the margin of the typescript. Original figures not satisfactory for photographic reproduction may be reproduced by specialists at the discretion of the Editor or Publisher. The cost of alteration or reproduction will be charged to the author. Colour illustrations are acceptable but the cost of reproduction must be borne by the author.
Checklist
Before sending off your manuscript, please check that (1) three copies are enclosed, (2) the reference section is in proper format, (3) all references cited in the text are included in the reference section, (4) the pages are numbered and (5) that you have indicated where tables and figures are to be inserted. These are the most common faults in manuscripts.
Style of papers
All contributions to the Journal should be written in English. Style should conform to the Council of Biology Editors Style Manual 5th edn (CBE Publications, 1983). Please follow the format in the current issue of the journal.
English improvement
Where contributions are judged as acceptable for publication on the basis of scientific content, the Editors or the Publisher may elect to have the English of such contributions improved. This English improvement may be undertaken by the Editors or the Publisher and the cost will be borne by the author. Research papers longer than 16 printed pages and technical reports, notes and comments longer than 4 printed pages (5 typed pages reduce to about 2 printed pages) will incur a levy of ?0,000 (US$80.00) per each individual printed page. This procedure notwithstanding, no paper will be rejected or given any extraordinary treatment on any basis other than its scientific merit.
Proofs
Page proofs will be sent to authors and should be returned to the Publisher within 5 days of receipt. Alterations to the text and illustrations are unacceptable at proof stage; authors will be charged for changes from their original manuscript.
Offprints
Fifty offprints of each paper are supplied free and sent to the author responsible for ordering the offprints. Additional copies may be ordered when proofs are returned. Offprints are sent out within 3 weeks from publication by surface mail.
Blackwell Science provides a free dial service from Japan (Tel: 00 31 61 6238). The Japanese Business Coordinator, a Japanese speaker, is able to answer author's questions regarding printing of colour figures, proofs and offprints. A message may be left on the answering machine if the office is unattended.
Award for Excellent Papers
From all the papers published in each volume of Ecological Research, up to three will be chosen by members of the Editorial Board as 'Excellent Papers".
