About the journal
Control Engineering Practice strives to meet the needs of industrial practitioners and industrially related academics and researchers. It publishes papers which illustrate the direct application of control theory and its supporting tools in all possible areas of automation. As a result, the journal only contains papers which can be considered to have made significant contributions to the application of control techniques. It is normally expected that practical results should be included, but where simulation only studies are available, it is necessary to demonstrate that the simulation model is representative of a genuine industrial application. Strictly theoretical papers will find a more appropriate home in Control Engineering Practice's sister publication, Automatica. Control Engineering Practice papers will tend to be shorter, and relevant to industrial readers.
In addition to purely technical applications papers the journal carries papers on topics linked to the application of automation, including social effects, cultural aspects, project planning and system design, and economic and management issues.
The scope of Control Engineering Practice matches the activities of IFAC:
Aerospace Marine systems Communication systems Biomedical engineering Pulp and paper processing Environmental engineering Scientific instrumentation Transportation and vehicles Power generation and other utilities Mining, mineral and metal processing Chemical and biotechnical process control Manufacturing technology and production engineering
The journal covers all applicable technologies:
Robotics Identification Signal processing Project management Autonomous vehicles Computer networking Modelling and simulation Human-computer systems Components and instruments Adaptive and robust control Electromechanical components Model-based control techniques Fault detection and diagnostics Software engineering techniques Hydraulic and pneumatic components Real-time and distributed computing Intelligent components and instruments Architectures and algorithms for control Computer-aided systems analysis and design Software design, verification, safety, etc. Artificial intelligence techniques, including fuzzy control neural networks and genetic algorithms
Another feature of the journal is the publication of a record of all papers presented at IFAC events, thereby providing readers with direct access to papers not otherwise published in either Control Engineering Practice or Automatica. These papers are available in other IFAC publications published by Elsevier Science. Further details are available from Elsevier Science Ltd, The Boulevard, Langford Lane, Kidlington, Oxford, OX5 1GB, UK. In addition, Control Engineering Practice contains a regular column of book reviews.
Additional information about Control Engineering Practice including book reviews, a list of published and forthcoming Special Sections and a list of editors past and present can be found at the Editor-in-Chief's site: http://control.ethz.ch/cep
Instructions to Authors
Submission of Papers Authors are requested to submit their original papers to Prof. A.H. Glattfelder using the submission website http://www.elsubmit.com/esubmit/conengprac . The website includes full instructions for use.
Upon request, Elsevier Science Japan KK will provide authors with a list of people who can check and improve the English of their paper (before submission). Please contact our Tokyo office: Higashi Azabu 1-chome Building 4F, 1-9-5, Higashi Azabu, Minato-ku, Tokyo 106, Japan, Tel: +81 3 5561 5032, Fax: +81 3 5561 5045.
Submission of a paper implies that it has not been published previously, that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, and that if accepted it will not be published elsewhere in the same form, in English or in any other language, without the written consent of the publisher.
Manuscript Preparation Electronic submission: Manuscripts should be submitted electronically. Please consult the submission website (http://www.elsubmit.com/esubmit/conengprac ) for details of acceptable file formats. Several electronic formats are acceptable. In the manuscript for review, figures and tables must be embedded into the text. Figures must also be supplied separately as high-resolution files (see below under Illustrations). Full details can be obtained from the submission website.
LaTeX authors: For authors using LaTeX, the document style files, as well as the instructions "Preparing articles with LaTeX" in the form of a dvi file, can be obtained free of charge from any host on the CTAN using anonymous ftp. The primary CTAN hosts are ftp.dante.de and ftp://ftp.tex.ac.uk . The Elsevier macros are in /pub/tex/macros/latex/contrib/supported/elsevier. These can also be downloaded from the website http://www.tex.ac.uk .
General: Manuscripts must be double spaced with wide margins and a font size of 10-12 pt. The corresponding author should be clearly identified (include a fax number and e-mail address). Full postal addresses must be given for all authors. If possible, authors should consult a recent issue of the journal for style. The Editors and the Publisher reserve the right to adjust style to a uniform standard. Authors should retain copies of all files since the Editors and the Publisher do not accept responsibility for damage or loss.
Text: Follow this order when typing manuscripts:
- Title (10 words long is the desired maximum length; give suggested running title if title is more that 5 words),
- Authors (The corresponding author should be identified with an asterisk and footnote),
- Affiliations (including present address, and a full communication address, including fax number and E-mail address),
- Abstract (about 50-100 words),
- Keywords (5-10 keywords taken from the IFAC Keyword list),
- Introduction to explain the background work, the practical applications and the nature and purpose of the paper,
- Body to contain the primary message, with clear lines of thought and validation of the techniques described,
- Conclusion to indicate the significant contribution of the manuscript with it limitations, advantages and applications,
- Acknowledgements (when appropriate),
- Appendix (when appropriate, with short titles as needed to explain development details),
- Figures and figure captions,
All footnotes (except for corresponding author and table footnotes) should be identified with superscript Arabic numbers. The use of the first person ("I", "We", etc) must be strictly avoided. Complicated mathematical proofs should be referenced, rather than spelt out in detail. Section headings should be numbered consecutively, starting with the Introduction; headings should be placed on the left, not centred. Sub-sections should be numbered 1.1, 2.2, etc. Avoid inserting a hyphen at the end of line (some software, e.g. LaTex, automatically hyphenate).
Units: The SI system should be used for all scientific and laboratory data; if, in certain instances, it is necessary to quote other units, these should be added in parentheses. Temperatures should be given in degrees Celsius. The unit 'billion' (109 in America, 1012 in Europe) is ambiguous and must not be used.
Symbols: Symbols denoting vectors and matrices should be indicated in bold type or by a wavy underline. All non-standard abbreviations or symbols are to be defined when first mentioned, or a glossary should be provided.
References: All publications cited in the text should be presented in a list of references following the text of the manuscript. In the text refer to the author's name (without initials) and year of publication, e.g. "Since Peterson (1993) has shown that..." or "This is in the agreement with results obtained later (Kramer, 1994)". "For publications by three to five authors, when the names are mentioned in the text, use Smith, Jones, White, and Brown (1999); when the names are not mentioned use (Smith, Jones, White, & Brown, 1999) for the first instance the reference is mentioned. For subsequent references use Smith et al. 1999. For publications by more than five authors, when the names are mentioned in the text, use Smith et al. (1999); when the names are not mentioned use (Smith et al., 1999)." The list of references should be arranged alphabetically by authors' names. The manuscript should be carefully checked to ensure that the spelling of authors' names and dates are exactly the same in the text as in the reference list. References should be given in the following form:
References not readily available to readers should be avoided; for example, those to articles pending publication or to private communications.
Illustrations: All illustrations should be provided in electronic format when submitting the paper (see above). Consult the submission website for guidelines. Photographs, charts and diagrams are all to be referred to as "Figure(s)" and should be numbered consecutively in the order to which they are referred. All figures must be accompanied by captions.
For the purposes of submission, figures should be provided in two forms: embedded into the manuscript in low resolution, and separately as high-resolution files. The submission website provides full instructions on how to do this.
Line drawings: Ensure that lettering, graph lines and points on graphs are sufficiently large and bold to permit reproduction when the diagram has been reduced to a size suitable for inclusion in the journal. Do not use any type of shading.
Photographs: Photographs and halftones should be supplied as they are to be reproduced, e.g. in black and white or colour. If necessary, a scale should be marked, but magnification factors should not be used.
Colour: Authors will be charged for the additional cost of printing figures in colour. 100 free offprints will be supplied in the case of paid colour. Full details are available from Author Services (see below).
Hardcopies: In some cases we may need to ask for hardcopies of the illustrations. In the event of this, the following should be noted:
- Photocopies are never acceptable;
- Hardcopies should always be clearly marked on the back with the figure number and the author's name;
- Original figures will be discarded after publication unless the Publisher is asked to return it after use.
Tables: Tables should be numbered consecutively and given a suitable caption. Tables may either be embedded in the text or placed at the end of the manuscript. Footnotes to tables should be placed below the table and should be referred to be superscript lower-case letters. Avoid the use of vertical rules. Tables should not duplicate results presented elsewhere in the manuscript, e.g. in graphs.
Proofs Proofs will be sent to the author (the first named author if no corresponding author is identified of multi-authored papers) and should be returned within 48 hours of receipt. Corrections should be restricted to typesetting errors; any others may be charged to the author. Any queries should be answered in full. Please note that authors are urged to check their proofs carefully before return, since the inclusion of late corrections cannot be guaranteed. Proofs are to be returned to the Log-in Department of the relevant Elsevier Science site.
Offprints Twenty-five offprints will be supplied free of charge. Further offprints and copies of the issue can be ordered at a specially reduced rate using the order form sent to the corresponding author after the manuscript has been accepted. Orders for reprints i.e. copies printed after publication, will incur a 50% surcharge.
