About the journal

What is CEP?

Chemical Engineering Progress (CEP) is the flagship publication of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), the world's leading organization for chemical engineers. About 55,000 professionals receive the magazine each month. Almost three-quarters of these influential readers work in industry, with the rest employed in academia and government. CEP's mandate is to provide essential technical and professional information to this key audience. That's why the magazine publishes by far the largest number of pages of articles by outside experts of any magazine serving chemical engineers.

What Types of Articles Does CEP Seek?

CEP publishes articles on the key aspects of chemical engineering: Energy Transfer and Conversion; Environmental Protection; Fluids and Solids Handling; Materials; Measurement and Control; Safety; Reactions and Separations; as well as Professional Development, and Management. In addition, each issue features a lengthy (about 15-page) cover "focus" on a broad-interest topic.

CEP's editorial focus can be summarized as follows: We strive to publish impartial, generic articles that provide some type of "how-to" guidance to the practicing chemical engineer, or an overview of some type of technology. We look for articles that focus on the general chemical engineering problem or situation and the generic method of solving that problem, rather than on what was done in a particular instance to solve a specific problem. We prefer articles that are broadly applicable throughout the chemical process industries (CPI), rather than limited to one or a few of the many industry segments.

It's important that any article not focus on a proprietary technology, but rather cover the topic in a generic, general way. The article cannot focus on a single firm's product or service.

We do not publish case histories. However, an article can use information from actual installations to illustrate specific points, but it should not turn into a series of case histories. We want the broadly applicable technical information that would enable a chemical engineer to evaluate whether a technology might be applicable to solve his or her problem, not "this is what we did in this particular situation."

Appropriate subjects for articles include: choosing among design or equipment options; troubleshooting a process unit; designing specific plant hardware; assessing the likely impact of emerging technology; reviewing key trends and challenges in engineering research and development; evaluating continuing-education needs -- and much, much more.

Instructions to Authors

included, and so on. That way, we can provide much better and more valuable feedback, and make the best use of your time.

If you have already written a paper (previously unpublished, of course) that you think might be suitable for publication in CEP, feel free to submit it for review.

Or, if you'd prefer, give us a call to discuss your idea with us. Click here for a list of editors, areas of responsibility, telephone numbers, and e-mail addresses.

When you send your outline or manuscript, be sure to keep a copy for yourself. We will acknowledge receipt of the material. After reviewing it, we will get back to you with our comments, usually within a few weeks.

Copyright Law

AIChE will require a copyright assignment for any articles to be published in CEP. To avoid any problems regarding copyright infringement, submit your draft to only one publication at a time. If the paper has been published or presented previously, let us know so that we can proceed accordingly. Papers presented at AIChE meetings remain the property of the author(s) and are not copyrighted by AIChE.
