About the journal
This journal publishes original papers covering all aspects of mechanisms, actions and structural components of
cellular signalling systems. The emphasis is on effector systems, such as tyrosyl kinases, stress and ERK kinases, protein kinase C, lipid signalling pathways, cyclic nucleotide signalling processes and ion channels; the production, regulation, degradation and action of second messengers; the structure, regulation, degradation and action of receptors; guanine nucleotide regulatory proteins; bio-informatic studies related to cell signalling mechanisms; the effect of cellular signalling events on the functioning, growth and differentiation of target cells in normal and pathological states and also cellular oncogenes. Within the scope of the journal, manuscripts dealing with biochemistry, protein structure, cell biology, molecular biology, pharmacology, neurobiology, molecular endocrinology and molecular oncology are welcomed. The journal also publishes short original reviews on topical subjects.
Instructions to Authors
Cellular Signalling will endeavour to give authors as rapid a decision as possible concerning the acceptability of their manuscript. Final decisions concerning acceptability will be made both on the novelty of the work and its scientific content. Cellular Signalling will accept original research papers written in a concise style which describe key findings. Manuscripts should be submitted in triplicate to the Editorial Office. Cellular Signalling will also publish Topical Reviews of approximately 3000-6000 words. In general these occasional contributions will be solicited by the Editorial Board. However, intending contributors should send a brief summary of their proposed Topical Review to the Editorial Office for comment on its possible acceptability. Cellular Signalling will also publish Comments on published work. These will be short statements which are generally not longer than 450 words. They will be subject to the normal editorial reviewing procedure.
Instructions to Authors
Manuscripts, in triplicate, should be sent by air mail or first class post to the Editor-in-Chief.
Form of manuscripts: These should be in English, typewritten on one side of the paper only and with double-spacing. A margin of approximately 3 cm should be left. The first page should contain the title of the paper, first and last names of each author, the corresponding author's full mailing address, telephone number, and fax. An E-Mail address should be included if available. The first page should also include the addresses of the authors, a running title of less than 75 characters and 6-8 keywords. The next page should contain a short abstract of the article in less than 150 words. Any abbreviations should also be defined here. The main body of the paper should then start on the following page with:
Introduction: short, concise but sufficient to service the needs of readers with different backgrounds;
Materials and Methods: all methods should be thoroughly described in sufficient detail to allow easy reproduction of the techniques employed. The source and quality of materials used should be given;
Results: clearly set out with appropriate subheadings;
Discussion: this should be succinct, detailing the key findings of the study, their importance and implications. In some instances it may be useful to combine the `Results' and `Discussion' sections for clarity and to avoid repetition.
Acknowledgements: should be given at the end of the text.
Tables and Illustrations: should be presented separately from the text. They can be submitted as glossy photographs; line-art in black ink on white card or tracing paper; as high resolution laserprinter output on white paper. The relevant number should be given on the reverse of each of the figures and/or tables together with the name of the senior author. All figures/tables require separate legends with sufficient detail to allow easy interpretation. Authors should indicate in the margin of their manuscript the optimal position for placement of figures and tables. Colour photographs can be printed but extra costs will be charged to the authors. Estimates will be given on request.
References: these should appear sequentially in the text and be referred to as numbers in brackets. At the end of the text, references should contain, in the following order, the name and initials of all authors, the appropriate journal abbreviation, the year of publication, volume number and both first and last pages of the paper. For books add the editor, title of the book, the address of the publisher, the publisher, the year of publication, and the volume number and page numbers. Any results quoted as `personal communication' should be accompanied by written permission from the relevant person.
Examples:
1. Meyer B. J. and Casson L. P. (1986) Cell 47, 871-881.
2. Allfrey V. (1959) The Cell. Biochemistry, Physiology, Morphology (Brachet J. and Mirsky A. E., Eds), pp. 200-208. Academic Press, New York.
Footnotes: other than the corresponding author's address should be placed at the bottom of the page to which they apply and numbered consecutively in the text.
Instructions regarding GenBank/DNA Sequence Linking:
DNA sequences and GenBank Accesion numbers: Many Elsevier journals cite "gene accession numbers" in their running text and footnotes. Gene accession numbers refer to genes or DNA sequences about which further information can be found in the database at the National Center for Biotechnical Information (NCBI) at the National Library of Medicine. Elsevier authors wishing to enable other scientists to use the accession numbers cited in their papers via links to these sources, should type this information in the following manner: For each and every accession number cited in an article, authors should type the accession number in bold, underlined text. Letters in the accession number should always be capitalised. (See Example 1 below). This combination of letters and format will enable Elsevier's typesetters to recognize the relevant texts as accession numbers and add the required link to GenBank's sequences.
Example 1: "GenBank accession nos. AI631510, AI631511, AI632198, and BF223228), a B-cell tumor from a chronic lymphatic leukemia (GenBank accession no. BE675048), and a T-cell lymphoma (GenBank accession no. AA361117)".
Authors are encouraged to check accession numbers used very carefully. An error in a letter or number can result in a dead link. In the final version of the printed article, the accession number text will not appear bold or underlined (see Example 2 below).
Example 2: "GenBank accession nos. AI631510, AI631511, AI632198, and BF223228, a B-cell tumor from a chronic lymphatic leukemia (GenBank accession no. BE675048), and a T-cell lymphoma (GenBank accession no. AA361117)".
In the final version of the electronic copy, the accession number text will be linked to the appropriate source in the NCBI databases enabling readers to go directly to that source from the article.
Computer Disks: Authors are encouraged to submit a 3.5' HD/DD computer disk to the editorial office; 5.25' HD/DD disks are acceptable if 3.5' disks are unavailable. Please observe the following criteria:
1. Send only hard copy when first submitting your paper.
2. When your paper has been refereed, revised if necessary, and accepted, send a disk containing the final version with the final hard copy. Make sure that the disk and the hardcopy match exactly (otherwise the diskette version will prevail).
3. Specify what software was used, including which release, e.g., WordPerfect 6.0a.
4. Specify what computerwas used (IBM compatible PC, Apple Macintosh, etc.).
5. The article file should include all textual material (text, references, tables, figure captions, etc.) and separate illustration files, if available.
6. The file should follow the general instructions on style/arrangement and, in particular, the reference style of this journal as given in the Instructions to Contributors.
7. The file should be single-spaced and should use the wrap-around end-of-line feature, i.e., returns at the end of paragraphs only. Place two returns after every element such as title, headings, paragraphs, figure and table call-outs.
8. Keep a backup disk for reference and safety.
Proofs--essential additions may be placed at the end of an article but any changes will be done at extra cost to the authors. Proofs will be sent to the authors for return within 48 hours of receipt.
Offprints--25 offprints of each article will be supplied free of charge to the corresponding authors. Additional offprints can be ordered on payment using the offprint order form which will accompany page proofs.
