About the journal

NEW! Cellular Microbiology's ISI Impact Factor for 2002 has increased from 4.557 to 4.895

OnlineEarly available soon

Cellular Microbiology publishes the best original scientific contribution on the intersection of microbial and host-cell biology. The focus is the host cell responses elicited by the interaction with micro-organisms. Equal emphasis is placed on responses to prokaryotic, viral and eukaryotic micro-organisms. In addition to mammalian systems, papers addressing other hosts such as plants and insects are strongly encouraged.

Exploitation of host cell structure
Modification of cell signalling pathways
Molecular responses of the host cell
Responses of tissues and whole organs
Systemic effects elicited by micro-organisms
Induction of immune response
Modulation and exploitation of immune response
Remodelling of tissues
Co-pathogen interactions
Cellular Microbiology would like to announce its particular interest in three subject areas by the expansion of the editorial team to now include:

Instructions to Authors

Cellular Microbiology is published monthly. Cellular Microbiology is covered by Blackwell Publishing's OnlineEarly service. OnlineEarly articles are complete full-text articles published online in advance of their publication in a printed issue. Articles are therefore available as soon as they are ready, rather than having to wait for the next scheduled print issue. OnlineEarly articles are complete and final. They have been fully reviewed, revised and edited for publication, and the authors' final corrections have been incorporated. Because they are in final form, no changes can be made after online publication. The nature of OnlineEarly articles means that they do not yet have volume, issue or page numbers, so OnlineEarly articles cannot be cited in the traditional way. They are therefore given a Digital Object Identifier (DOI), which allows the article to be cited and tracked before it is allocated to an issue. After print publication the DOI remains valid and can continue to be used to cite and accesss the article.

Editorial Policy

The scope of Cellular Microbiology includes:

Exploitation of host cell structure
Modification of cell signalling pathways
Molecular responses of the host cell
Cell biological study of eukaryotic pathogens and their mechanisms of virulence
Responses of tissues and whole organs
Systemic effects elicited by micro-organisms
Induction of immune response
Modulation and exploitation of immune response
Remodelling of tissues
Co-pathogen interactions
In addition to the principal content of full length and short research papers, issues may include Editorials/Opinions, Microreviews, Technoreviews and Meeting Reports as regular features.

Research Papers
Full length or short communications of original research will be published. Short communications contain a maximum of six printed pages. Only complete reports will be published; notes or preliminary communications will not be considered.

Microreviews
Short reviews of 5-7 printed pages are published in areas of particular interest and current importance. Many, but not all, reviews are invited; authors wishing to submit a review should contact David Sibley, from whom further details of the format and content of the reviews section can be obtained

Technoreviews
Short reviews (5-7 pages) dealing with technical advances that provide new approaches for examination of host-pathogen interactions are welcome. Technoreviews should provide an overview of the development and/or application of the methodology including its relative strengths, advantages and potential limitations. Prospective authors may obtain further details on the format and content of Technoreviews from David Sibley.

Meeting reports
Meeting reports are short, succinct, personal accounts of the most recent and exciting developments in a particular aspect of Cellular Microbiology, as presented at a recent symposium, workshop, colloquium or congress. Meeting reports are written by one or more participants at the meeting. Authors wishing to submit a Meeting report should first get in touch with one of the Editors, who will decide whether the chosen topic is suitable and will provide further information on the format and content of the article.

Submission of Manuscripts

All manuscripts should be submitted online at http://cell-micro.manuscriptcentral.com. A user ID and password are required and can be obtained on the first use of the site. Full instructions are provided. All file types are supported but to help Editors and reviewers view the submission the following types are recommended: text in Microsoft Word or generic rich text format (RTF), figures in Microsoft Power-Point, Microsoft Excel, JPEG, GIF, EPS, TIFF or PNG. Macintosh users are advised to add the correct three-letter filename suffix. It is strongly recommended that, where possible, you combine all parts of your submission into a single document. Full help and support are provided by e-mail (support@scholarone.com), the web (http://blackwellssupport.custhelp.com) or telephone (+1 434-817-2040 ext.167). If you cannot submit online please contact the Editorial Office:

Claudia Fenner, Editorial Associate, Cellular Microbiology, 140 Warren Hall, University of California, Berkeley, CA 94720-7360. Tel: +(1) 510 643 1008; Fax: +(1) 510 643 1537; E-mail: cmicro@socrates.berkeley.edu.

Cellular Microbiology is pleased to announce the appointment of three Associate Editors. Manuscripts should be submitted by subject category to the appropriate Editor.

Manuscripts addressing mechanisms of pathogenesis and bacterial-celllular interactions should continue to be submitted to either Richard S. Stephens or Philippe Sansonetti.
Manuscripts addressing parasitology should be submitted to Norma Andrews.
Manuscripts on plant pathogens should be submitted to Jeffery Dangl.
Virology manuscripts should be submitted to Hidde Ploegh.
Microreviews and Technoreviews continue to be submitted to David Sibley. Every effort will be made to ensure rapid publication. Authors will normally receive reviewers' comments within four weeks of submission.

No page charges will be levied. Papers must be submitted exclusively to Cellular Microbiology and are accepted on the understanding that they have not been, and will not be, published elsewhere. If any part of a study submitted to Cellular Microbiology is resubmitted at a later date, the manuscript must be sent to the Editor who originally handled it.

If accepted, papers become copyright of the Journal. Authors must give signed consent to publication in a letter sent with the paper, but permission to use material elsewhere (e.g. in review articles) will normally be granted on request.

Presentation of Manuscripts

Papers should be as concise as possible, compatible with clarity and completeness. For guidance, eight printed pages corresponds to 17 pages of double line-spaced manuscript with three figures/tables, 15 pages of manuscript with six figures/tables, or 14 pages of manuscript with eight figures/tables. The text should be double spaced.

Figures included with online submissions should be suitable for onscreen viewing and desktop printing. Higher quality images (digital and hard copy) should be provided on request or on manuscript acceptance.

Cellular Microbiology encourages the publication of colour figures. It is the policy of Cellular Microbiology for authors to pay the full cost for the reproduction of their colour artwork. Therefore, please note that if there is colour artwork in your manuscript when it is accepted for publication, Blackwell Publishing require you to complete and return a colour work agreement form before your paper can be published. If the authors cannot meet the charges, and the Editor feels that colour figures are essential for a manuscript, then it may be possible to waive part of these charges. The form can be downloaded as a PDF* from the internet. The web address for the form is http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/pdf/Sub3000_X_CoW.pdf. If you are unable to access the internet, or are unable to download the form, please contact the Editorial Office and they will be able to email or fax a form to you. Once completed, please return the form to the the relevant editorial office. Any article received by Blackwell Publishing with colour work will not be published until the form has been returned.

The title page should include the author's name(s), affiliations and the address to which all correspondence and proofs should be sent. Telephone and fax numbers should also be supplied, along with an e-mail address if available. Present addresses of authors should appear as a footnote. A running title of not more than 50 characters should be provided together with up to six key words for indexing purposes.

Authors may nominate up to four referees to be used, and up to four referees not to use (additional information should be provided in the covering letter). However the Editors reserve the right not to use these.

All papers must normally include a summary not exceeding 200 words. The main text should be subdivided into Introduction, Results, Discussion and Experimental procedures. The Results and Discussion sections may be combined and can include additional subheadings. Experimental procedures should be sufficiently detailed to enable the experiments to be reproduced.

All pages must be numbered consecutively. Tables, figure legends and acknowledgements should follow the main text, each on a separate page. Footnotes should be avoided.

Standard abbreviations should be as recommended in Quantities, Units, and Symbols (The Royal Society, 1988). Abbreviations of non-standard terms should follow, in parentheses, their first full usage.

References

Authors should use the system illustrated below. Only full articles which have been published or are 'in press' may be included in the reference list. In the text, unpublished or submitted studies should be referred to as such (e.g. J. M. Smith, unpublished), or as a personal communication. It is the author's responsibility to obtain permission from colleagues to include their work as a personal communication.

In the text, references should be inserted in parentheses in date order, as follows: (Sansonetti et al., 1997; Stephens, 1998). The reference list should be in alphabetical order according to the first named author. Papers with two authors should follow those of the first named author, arranged in alphabetical order according to the name of the second author. Articles with more than two authors should follow those of the first named author in chronological order.

The title of the article must be included. For papers with up to seven authors, the names of all authors should be listed. For papers with eight or more authors, the first six names should be listed, followed by 'et al.'. Standard abbreviations of journal titles should be used, as in the Index Medicus. The following provide examples:

Higgins, C.F., Causton, H.C., Dance, G.S.G., and Mudd, E.A. (1993) The role of the 3 end in mRNA stability and decay. In Control of Messenger RNA Stability. Belasco, J.G., and Brawerman, G. (ed.) San Diego: Academic Press, pp. 13-30.

References to material available on the World Wide Web can be given, but only if the information is available without charge to readers on an official site. Authors will be asked to provide electronic copies of the cited material for inclusion on the Cellular Microbiology Web page at the discretion of the Editors. The format for citations is as follows:

Beckleheimer, J. (1994). How do you cite URLs in a bibliography? [WWW document]. URL http://www.nrlssc.navy.mil/meta/bibliography.html

Genetic Nomenclature

Standard genetic nomenclature should be used. For more detailed information, authors should consult Bachman (Microbiol Rev 47: 180-230, 1983) for E. coli K-12; Sanderson and Roth (Microbiol Rev 47: 310-453, 1983) for Salmonella typhimurium; Holloway et al. (Microbiol Rev 43: 73-102, 1979) for Bacillus subtilis; Perkins et al. (Microbiol Rev 46: 426-570, 1982) for Neurospora crassa; and the Handbook of Genetics Vol. 1 (R. C. King, ed., Plenum Press, 1974) for Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

Sequence Data Submission

Nucleotide sequence data can be submitted in electronic form to any of the three major collaborative databases: DDBJ/EMBL/GenBank. It is only necessary to submit to one database, without regard to where the sequence data will be published. Data are exchanged between DDBJ, EMBL and GenBank on a daily basis. The suggested wording for referring to accession number information is: 'These sequence data have been submitted to the DDBJ/EMBL/GenBank databases under accession number U12345'. Addresses for these databases can be obtained from the Cellular Microbiology Web site (http://www.cell-micro.com).
