About the journal

Aims & Scope

Cellular and Molecular Neurobiology publishes original research concerned with the analysis of neuronal and brain function at the cellular and subcellular levels. This superb bimonthly offers timely, peer-reviewed articles that describe anatomic, genetic, physiologic, pharmacologic, and biochemical approaches to the study of neuronal function and the analysis of elementary mechanisms. Studies are presented on isolated mammalian tissues and intact animals, with investigations aimed at the molecular mechanisms or neuronal responses at the level of single cells. The journal also presents studies of the effects of neurons on other organ systems, such as analysis of the electrical or biochemical response to neurotransmitters or neurohormones on smooth muscle or gland cells. All articles are rigorously appraised by at least two referees.

  1. Submission is a representation that the manuscript has not been published previously and is not currently under consideration for publication elsewhere. A statement transferring copyright from the authors (or their employers, if they hold the copyright) to Plenum Publishing Corporation will be required before the manuscript can be accepted for publication. The Editor will supply the necessary forms for this transfer. Such a written transfer of copyright, which previously was assumed to be implicit in the act of submitting a manuscript, is necessary under the U.S. Copyright Law in order for the publisher to carry through the dissemination of research results and reviews as widely and effectively as possible.
  2. Cellular and Molecular Neurobiology will publish papers which conform to any of the following categories: (a) Review and Commentary, solicited or unsolicited articles which present either an exhaustive literature review in a particular field or a more provocative point-of-view discussion of an area; (b) Contemporary Techniques in Neurobiology, solicited or unsolicited articles which present new approaches to investigation of the nervous system; (c) Research Articles, full-length reports containing complete details of methods and procedures; (d) Short Communications of 1500 words or less with no more than three figures and/or tables. Each article, whether volunteered or solicited, will be rigorously appraised by at least two referees and their comments will be made available to the author. The journal also publishes (e) Rapid Communications, which should be prepared in the journal‘s style and be no more than 8 (journal) pages, including references, figures, and tables. Rapid Communications are reviewed within one week and published in the next journal issue, usually no longer than three months after receipt by the Editor‘s Office.
  3. Manuscripts must be written in English, submitted in triplicate (including copies of all illustrations and tables), and typed with double spacing and margins of at least 2.5 cm on normal-sized stationery. Receipt of manuscripts will be acknowledged.
  4. The title page should include a full title, a short running title, the full name and address of the laboratory of origin, the name and address of the person to whom proofs should be mailed, and any necessary footnotes regarding present addresses of authors. Do not include footnotes relating to other matters on this page.
  5. All manuscripts should begin with a Summary of the aims, methods, results, and conclusions, consisting of short, numbered sentences or paragraphs. The Summary must not exceed 10% of the length of the manuscript.
  6. A list of key words (descriptive words or phrases used as indexing terms) should be provided directly below the Summary. Authors are reminded to consider indexing services and maximum benefit to readers when selecting titles and key words.
  7. Is it recommended that the text of full-length articles be divided into sections entitled Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, and References.
  8. Illustrations should be prepared with india ink and submitted as originals, if possible. Clear black and white reproductions (offset, for example) are acceptable; Xerox copies are not. If photographs are used, they should be glossy prints showing high contrast. All illustrations are to be numbered in one consecutive series of Arabic numerals, and a list of captions should be typed on a separate sheet of paper. Identify each figure on the back with author‘s name and number of the illustration. Figures should be lettered with characters large enough to be easily read when reduced to page size. Separate drawings are required for diagrams that appear in the text even though they are not labeled "figures."
  9. Tables should be numbered consecutively (using Roman numerals) and referred to by number in the text. Each table should be typed on a separate sheet of paper. Each table must have a title and may have footnotes, if appropriate. If used, footnotes should be labeled in alphabetical sequence.
  10. References in the text should be indicated by use of both the authors?last name(s) and the year of publication in parentheses. If there are more than two authors, the name of the first author should be given, followed by the words "et al." and the year of publication. If there is more than one reference for the same author(s) from the same year, they should be referenced in the text and in the reference list with a, b, c, etc., following the year. In the References section, entries should be arranged alphabetically and the abbreviations should follow the Council of Biology Editors Style Manual, 3rd Edition, 1972. Be certain to include a complete listing of all authors with full title. Examples of entries to the References section:

Ciaranello, R. D., and Axelrod, J. (1973). Genetically controlled alterations in the rate of degradation of phenylethanolamine N-methyltransferase. J. Biol. Chem. 248:5616-5623.
Cotman, C. W., and Hamberger, A. (1977). Glutamate as a CNS transmitter: properties of release, inactivation and biosynthesis. In Fonnum, F. (ed.), Amino Acids as Chemical Transmitters, Plenum Press, New York, pp. 379-412.

  11. Footnotes should be avoided in the text if possible. If essential, they should be numbered consecutively and placed at the bottom of the appropriate page. Acknowledgment of support and assistance may appear at the end of the text as a separate section directly preceding the References section.
  12. After a manuscript has been accepted for publication and after all revisions have been incorporated, manuscripts should be submitted to the Editor‘s Office as hard copy accompanied by electronic files on disk. Label the disk with identifying information -- software, journal name, and first author‘s last name. The disk must be the one from which the accompanying manuscript (finalized version) was printed out. The Editor‘s Office cannot accept a disk without its accompanying, matching hard-copy manuscript.
  13. The journal makes no page charges. Reprints are available to authors, and order forms with the current price schedule are sent with proofs.
