About the journal
|
Boreas has been published since 1972. Articles of wide international interest from all branches of Quaternary research are published. Biological as well as non-biological aspects of the Quaternary environment, in both glaciated and non-glaciated areas, are dealt with: Climate, shore displacement, glacial features, land forms, sediments, organisms and their habitat, and stratigraphical and chronological relationships.
Anticipated international interest, at least within a continent or a considerable part of it, is a main criterion for the acceptance of papers.
Besides articles, short items like discussion contributions and book reviews are published.

Instructions to Authors
***Note to Authors: please make sure your contact address information is clearly visible on the outside of all packages you are sending to Editors.***
Manuscripts are to be sent in triplicate to the Editor. The author's permanent and temporary addresses are to be given. Manuscripts accepted for publication, including original artwork, will not be returned to the author unless requested. The author is requested to retain a complete copy of the manuscript. Proofs will be sent to the author once for careful reading and prompt return using the green address slip. The author will be charged for changes against the manuscript made by him in the proof. Reprints in addition to the 50 free copies are to be ordered on a form supplied with the proofs. It is possible to accelerate publication of a manuscript through paying an optional page charge for the whole article; payment of a page charge by no means influences the criteria of quality for acceptance of an article.
MANUSCRIPT The manuscript must be typewritten on one side of standard-sized paper, double spaced, and with an ample left margin. If a matrix printer is used, near letter quality (NLQ) is required. The text must be clear and concise, and written in English. Manuscripts should not normally exceed 12 printed pages and should be arranged in the following order:
(1) Informative but brief title (typewritten in lower case). (2) Author's name: one or more of the forenames unabbreviated (typewritten in upper case). (3) A short abstract not exceeding 1330 letters and spaces, and starting with a repetition of 2 and 1. (4) The author's professional address and a dating of the manuscript. (5) The main text. Use three or fewer grades of heading. All headings should start at the left margin and be typewritten in lower case; they are not to be underlined (except those to be italicized). Indicate in the left-hand margin the approximate position of figures and tables. The word 'Fig.' ('Figs') and 'Table' (unabbreviated) are to be written with capital initials in the text. Instead of footnotes, insert paragraphs which can be composed in smaller type or use parentheses. (6) References shall conform to the examples given below. Titles of journals and other publications are to be written out in full (not abbreviated as previously). Use ampersand for joint authorship in the text references and the entries in the reference list (but not elsewhere). References in languages using Cyrillic or other non-Latin letters should be transliterated. (7) Captions of illustrations, if any. Figure captions must not be attached to the figure originals submitted. (8) Tables, if any, with captions numbered with arabic numerals.
ELECTRONIC MANUSCRIPTS The editors encourage submissions on diskette to facilitate rapid accessibility to the readers. Only the final (revised) manuscript should be submitted on diskette along with three copies of the printout. The electronic files and the printout must be identical. Cost of changes to the electronic manuscript may be charged to the author(s). The diskette should be labelled with the author's name and the name of the computer platform and version of the word processing system used. Please observe that Taylor & Francis can receive files from any word processing system; however, styled Microsoft Word files are preferred. Graphic elements should be kept as separate files in EPS or TIFF format. Halftones and colour photos should be included separately. Please use these simple guidelines when preparing your electronic manuscript:
1. Be consistent. The same elements should be keyed in exactly the same way throughout the manuscript. 2. Do not break words at the end of lines, use a hyphen only to hyphenate compound words. 3. Enter only one space after the full-stop at the end of a sentence. 4. When emphasising words, please use the italic feature of your word processor software. 5. Do not justify your text, use a ragged right-hand margin. 6. Use a double hyphen (--) to indicate a dash in text. 7. Do not use the lowercase l for 1 (one) or the uppercase O for 0 (zero). 8. The space bar should only be used as a word separator. Use TAB when indenting paragraphs or separating columns in tables. 9. Please keep graphic elements (e.g. images) as separate files (e.g. EPS or TIFF files). Originals of good quality can also be submitted as usual.

ILLUSTRATIONS Illustrations should be reducible to a maximum size of 17.0 ?22.3 cm or less. It is recommended that figures be constructed either for the entire width of the type area (17.0 cm) or for the column width of 8.3 cm. If possible, avoid figures between 12.7 and 17.0 cm. High-quality prints of a maximum size of A4, preferably reduced to the final size, should be submitted rather than originals of drawings. If originals are submitted, they must not exceed A4 (US) in size. The author's name and the figure number should be written very lightly on the back of all figures. Photographs are to be clear, sharply contrasted and printed on white, smooth paper. Figures may be composed of several quadrangular units similar to each other in tone. Foldout inserts and colour illustrations are permitted, provided the author bears the cost. Boreas does not print plates. All halftones will be printed at their proper place in the text. Consequently, all illustrations should be termed figures, even if occasionally covering an entire page, and the items of composite figures should be designated A, B, C, etc. (not a, b, c, etc.).
