About the journal

In this review journal, biotechnology is viewed in a comprehensive context: a multidisciplinary field in which biological systems are developed and/or used for the provision of commercial goods or services. Biotechnology Advances is devoted to all areas of biotechnology including relevant aspects of its disciplinary underpinnings in biology, chemistry and engineering. The primary purpose is to provide regular, rapid but authoritative reviews of important advances in this field for students, researchers, managers and others in industry, government and academia. A timely series of research review papers, patent abstracts and summaries of special government reports on the principles and practices of biotechnology are covered quarterly. Occasionally, special issues will be published as proceedings of appropriate conferences and symposia. Organizers of such meetings should contact the Editors for further details.

Instructions to Authors

In this review journal, biotechnology is viewed in a comprehensive context: a multidisciplinary field in which biological systems are developed or used for the provision of goods or services. Biotechnology Advances is devoted to all areas of biotechnology including its basic underpinnings in the scientific and engineering fundamentals as well as its applications in medicine, agriculture, industry, environmental issues and regulatory considerations.

Submission of manuscripts
Submission of a paper to Biotechnology Advances implies: it is not being submitted for publication elsewhere; transfer of the copyright from the author to the Publisher. One original plus two copies of the manuscript and a copy of the word processor disk should be submitted to one of the editors who normally will arrange for its confidential peer-review. In general, unsolicited submissions should be sent to the Executive Editor*. Page charges will not be made. The following types of contributions are considered: (1) Review Articles. Both short reviews of recent literature and longer more extensive ones (2) Patent Critiques. In these articles, a patent or a group of related patents is critiqued (3) Guest Editorials. Observations on recent developments in a given area (4) Book Reviews (5) Patent Abstracts. A classified listing of recent patents prepared by the editors. (6) Conference Reports. Overviews of presentations at recent meetings (7) Special Issues of the journal are based on review papers selected from the proceedings of professional meetings. Organisers of these meetings are invited to act as Guest Editors of the given journal issue(s). (8) A Supplementary Issue on a focussed topic may be developed in consultation with the Publishing Editor*.

Preparation of manuscripts
An electronic manuscript should be prepared with double spacing (10-pt, Times Roman font preferred). The title page should give the authors' names and affiliations, as well as a postal address for the corresponding author (indicated with an asterisk) including a fax number and e-mail address (if available). All pages should be numbered consecutively. An abstract and up six keywords must be included. Figures and tables should be placed at the end after the References section. Use of electronic manuscripts avoids rekeying of text resulting in reliable, fast delivery of proofs. After acceptance of a manuscript, a revised disk (DD/HD 3.5 inch), if required, plus two, exactly matching printed versions should be re-submitted together to the contact editor. Label the disk with the computer type used (e.g., PC, Mac) and the word processing package (e.g., Word, Word Perfect), your name, and the name of the disk file. If required, further information may be obtained from the Publishing Editor*. References should be cited by name and year (Harvard System). More than one paper from the same first author in the same year must be identified by the letters a, b, c, etc., placed after the year of publication. When referring to a work by more than two authors, the name of the first author should be given followed by et al. The literature references should consist of names and initials of all authors, year, title of paper, abbreviated title of periodical, volume number and first and last page numbers of the paper. Examples are given below:
Bunz, PV, Schmidt S. The microbial degradation of halogenated diaryl ethers. Biotechnol. Adv. 1998;15:621-32.
Chisti MY. Airlift Bioreactors. London:Elsevier, 1988.
Millis NF. The organisms of biotechnology. In: Moo-Young M, Bull, AT, Dalton H, editors. Comprehensive Biotechnology. Vol 1. Oxford:Pergamon, 1985. pp.7-20.
Abbreviations of journal titles should conform to international guidelines, e.g., the Chemical Abstracts Service Source Index (CASSI).
Tables should be typed double spaced on separate sheets, numbered consecutively, and only contain horizontal lines. A short title should appear above each table, with possible footnotes (identified with a, b, c, etc.) below. Figures should be in clear black-and-white or half-tones, suitable for direct reproduction. The size should not exceed 16.0 x 20.2 cm. Try to avoid colour photographs: authors may be expected to pay for their reproduction [Check with the Publishing Editor*]. Each illustration should be marked on the reverse side with the number, author's name, and orientation (top), using a soft pencil. Equations should be numbered consecutively with the numbers in brackets flush with the right margin. Symbols and units should conform to standard guidelines (e.g., ACS Style Guide, Washington DC, Comprehensive Biotechnology, Appendix 2, Pergamon, Oxford) and, if extensive, be listed in a Nomenclature section prior to the References at the end of the manuscript. SI units should be used. Note the format-preferences for the following SI-approved alternatives: l or L, preferred, for litre; gL-1 h-1 or g/(L.h), preferred, for compound units.
Questions arising after acceptance of a manuscript, especially those relating to proofs, should be directed to the Issue Manager*.

Instructions regarding GenBank/DNA Sequence Linking:
DNA sequences and GenBank Accesion numbers: Many Elsevier journals cite "gene accession numbers" in their running text and footnotes. Gene accession numbers refer to genes or DNA sequences about which further information can be found in the database at the National Center for Biotechnical Information (NCBI) at the National Library of Medicine. Elsevier authors wishing to enable other scientists to use the accession numbers cited in their papers via links to these sources, should type this information in the following manner:
For each and every accession number cited in an article, authors should type the accession number in bold, underlined text. Letters in the accession number should always be capitalised. (See Example 1 below). This combination of letters and format will enable Elsevier's typesetters to recognize the relevant texts as accession numbers and add the required link to GenBank's sequences.

Example 1: "GenBank accession nos. AI631510, AI631511, AI632198, and BF223228), a B-cell tumor from a chronic lymphatic leukemia (GenBank accession no. BE675048), and a T-cell lymphoma (GenBank accession no. AA361117)".

Authors are encouraged to check accession numbers used very carefully. An error in a letter or number can result in a dead link.
In the final version of the printed article, the accession number text will not appear bold or underlined (see Example 2 below).

Example 2: "GenBank accession nos. AI631510, AI631511, AI632198, and BF223228, a B-cell tumor from a chronic lymphatic leukemia (GenBank accession no. BE675048), and a T-cell lymphoma (GenBank accession no. AA361117)".

In the final version of the electronic copy, the accession number text will be linked to the appropriate source in the NCBI databases enabling readers to go directly to that source from the article.

Proofs will be sent to the first-named author unless a corresponding author is identified on the title page of the manuscript. They should be checked carefully and returned by airmail within 2 days of receipt. Only printer's errors may be corrected: no revisions will be allowed at this stage. Twenty-five free reprints per contribution will be made available to the corresponding author. Additional reprints may be obtained by returning the order form accompanying the proofs.
