Instructions to Authors
General PolicyBioscience Reports accepts reports of original research of sufficient interest and significance to justify rapid publication. All areas relating to the cell surface (including biochemical genetics, development, endocrinology, immunology, neurophysiology, oncology, pharmacology, etc.) are represented. Reports may present new methods, important applications of new methods, new interpretations and treatments of existing data, as well as conventional studies in the molecular and cellular biology of the cell surface. Authors will usually have a response to the submitted paper in 2¨C3 weeks, and publication of accepted papers will be within approximately 2 months. To maintain this schedule, it will usually be necessary to reject manuscripts that require extensive revision. Invited reviews and other material are published from time to time. Authors who wish to submit a review should first contact the Chairman or Deputy Chairman of the Board of Editors.
SubmissionThree copies of the manuscript should be submitted to any member of the Board of Editors (addresses are given on the front inside cover). That Editor will normally (in conjunction with referees where necessary) handle the complete editorial review; in some cases, a paper may be sent to another editor. A self-addressed postcard for acknowledgment of manuscript receipt and a properly executed, signed transfer-of-copyright form (reproduced on the last page of each issue) absolutely must be included. Submission is a representation that the manuscript has not been published previously and is not currently under consideration for publication elsewhere. A statement transferring copyright from the authors (or their employers, if they hold the copyright) to Plenum Publishing Corporation is required at the time of submission. The necessary form is included at the end of each issue. Such a written transfer of copyright, which previously was assumed to be implicit in the act of submitting a manuscript, is necessary under the U.S. Copyright Law in order for the publisher to carry through the dissemination of research results and reviews as widely and effectively as possible. Proofs of accepted papers will not be sent to authors.
FormatThe contents of reports should generally be arranged in the following order: (a) title, author's name(s) and affiliation(s), running title (less than or equal to 45 letters), and indexing key words; (b) abstract; (c) introduction; (d) methods; (e) results; (f) discussion; (g) acknowledgments; (h) references; (i) tables; (j) figure-caption list; and (k) figures. Footnotes should not be used. Other logical arrangements are permissible. Manuscripts must be clear, but corrections made in ink are acceptable as papers will be typeset. However, since proofs are not provided, the content of the manuscript should be letter-perfect. Papers must be written in English (U.S. or English spellings are acceptable) and double-spaced throughout. There are no stringent restrictions on the length of manuscripts. The abstract should succinctly inform the reader of the major conclusions; two or three sentences will generally be sufficient; vague statements (such as "Results are discussed") should be avoided. The introduction should clearly state the problem and why it is important. Methods should be complete, with references wherever possible; they may be abbreviated if a longer publication on the same subject is in press. Results should be logically presented. Discussion should avoid unnecessary repetition of results and may include carefully considered speculation; the results and discussion sections may often profitably be combined. References should generally follow the "Harvard" system [author(s) and year in the text; alphabetical arrangement in the list of references], although other accepted styles (e.g., serial numbers in text) are permissible. Tables should be as simple and as clearly presented as possible, with titles. Tables should be numbered (with Roman numerals) and referred to by number in the text. Each table should be typed on a separate sheet of paper. Figures are to be numbered in one consecutive series of Arabic numerals, and the list of captions should be typed on a separate sheet of paper. Identify each figure on the back with author's name and number of the illustration. Figures absolutely must be camera-ready (preferably photographic prints) with all labels included. Absolutely no revisions or repairs to artwork can be done. Submitted line drawings must be already reduced to the final size (maximum 125 ¡Á 200 mm). Submitted halftones may be any reasonable size, but ones larger than 125 ¡Á 200 mm will be reduced for publication (therefore, if magnification factors are involved, submitted halftones should not exceed 125 ¡Á 200 mm). Micrographs and other photographs should if possible be glossy (if halftones) or matt (if line drawings) prints of the best attainable quality, protected with clean paper taped to the back, without paper clips, and not heavily written upon front or back. Standard abbreviations (see Biochem. J. 241, 1-24, 1987) may be used throughout. Nonstandard abbreviations should be avoided; if used, the first mention of the unabbreviated word of phrase should be followed by the abbreviation in parentheses. SI units are preferred.
ReprintsThe journal makes no page charges, and provides 25 complimentary reprints to the author. Additional reprints are available to authors, and order forms with the current price schedule are sent to the author by the Editor at the time of manuscript acceptance. Authors must complete the form and air-mail it promptly to the address given on the form, whether or not additional reprints are ordered. If the reprint order form must pass through a purchasing department, an advance copy, so labeled, must be sent immediately to the address given on the form; otherwise reprints will be significantly more expensive or possibly unavailable.
Subscription inquiries and subscription orders should be addressed to the publisher at Subscription Department, Kluwer Academic/Plenum Publishers, 233 Spring Street, New York, N.Y. 10013-1578 or faxed to the Subscription Department at its number (212) 807 1047, or may be telephoned to the Subscription Department's Journal Customer Service at (212) 620-8035, -8404, -8466, -8476, or -8490
