About the journal

This international rapid-publication journal, sponsored by the Society of Biological Psychiatry, covers the whole range of psychiatric neuroscience. Both basic and clinical contributions are encouraged from all disciplines and research areas relevant to the pathophysiology and treatment of major neuropsychiatric disorders. Full-length and Brief Reports of novel results, Case Studies of unusual significance, and Correspondence and Comments judged to be of high impact to the field are published, particularly those addressing genetic and environmental risk factors, neural circuitry and neurochemistry, and important new therapeutic approaches. Concise Reviews and Editorials, generally invited by the Editors, which focus on topics of current research and interest, are also published rapidly.

Visit the web site of the Society of Biological Psychiatry at URL: http://www.sobp.org/ for details on membership, publications, awards and other society information.

Biological Psychiatry is ranked 3rd out of the 88 Psychiatry titles and 18th out of 197 Neurosciences titles on the 2002 ISI Journal Citation Reports.

Instructions to Authors

Biological Psychiatry is the official journal of the Society of Biological Psychiatry. The Journal rapidly publishes reports of novel results on a broad range of topics related to the pathophysiology and treatment of major neuropsychiatric disorders. Both basic and clinical neuroscience contributions are encouraged, particularly those addressing genetic and environmental risk factors, neural circuitry and neurochemistry, and important new therapeutic approaches.

Manuscripts should be sent electronically to Dennis S. Charney, M.D., Editor, at biol.psych@UTSouthwestern.edu, or by mail to Biological Psychiatry, Department of Psychiatry, The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, 6363 Forest Park Road, Suite B225T, Dallas TX 75235-5435.

SUBMISSION Submission is a representation that all authors have personally reviewed and given final approval of the version submitted, and neither the manuscript nor its data have been previously published (except in abstract) or are currently under consideration for publication. Any possible conflict of interest, financial or otherwise, related to the submitted work must be clearly indicated in the manuscript. Except for Editorial and Correspondence submissions, in their cover letter, authors should suggest 6 reviewers who are especially qualified to referee the work and would not have a conflict of interest in reviewing the paper. Authors should include the complete address, phone, fax numbers and e-mail address for each potential referee.

Authors of reports on human studies, especially those involving placebo, symptom provocation, drug discontinuation, or patients with disorders that may impair decision-making capability, should consider the ethical issues related to the work presented and include (in the "Methods and Materials" section of their manuscript) detailed information on the informed consent process, including the method(s) used to assess the subject's capacity to give informed consent, and safeguards included in the study design for protection of human subjects. Specifically, authors should consider all ethical issues relevant to their research, and briefly address each of these in their reports. When relevant patient follow-up data are available, they should also be reported. With this exception, and that of the format for references, these instructions conform to the guidelines set forth by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (see Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals (1997): N Engl J Med 336:309-315).

ARTICLE CONTENT Our readership is diverse, and it is well to remember that many of our readers will be in specialty areas other than your own. It is important, therefore, to avoid jargon. A focused and clearly written manuscript is more likely to appeal to the readership. In highly specialized areas the introduction should be a concise primer.

Please view chart in PDF.

REVIEW PROCESS The actual selection of reviewers will be made by the editors. As a general rule, papers will be evaluated by three independent reviewers and, on occasion, an additional review for statistical adequacy may also be obtained. The comments of the reviewers are generally communicated to the authors within two months of submission, however, longer delays are occasionally unavoidable. If revisions are a condition of publication, only two revised versions of the paper will be considered.
Authors should be aware that manuscripts may be returned without outside review when the editors deem that the paper is of insufficient general interest for the broad readership of Biological Psychiatry, or that the scientific quality is such that it is unlikely to receive favorable reviews. Editorial rejection is done to speed up the editorial process and to allow the authors' papers to be promptly submitted and reviewed elsewhere. All other submissions (with the general exception of Editorials and Correspondence) will be subject to peer review.
PUBLICATION SCHEDULE Abstracts of articles are posted on our website upon acceptance and the complete (citeable) article approximately 45 days later, after author verification. Full text of Priority Communication and other articles judged to be of high impact to the field will be published in the printed journal 3 months after acceptance. All other articles will be published in the printed journal within 6 months of acceptance, with most being published in 4-5 months.
FORM Number pages consecutively and type corresponding author's name on each page. On the title page, include full names of authors, academic or professional affiliations, and complete address with phone and fax numbers and e-mail address of the corresponding author. Six key words should be included, and financial support should be indicated on the title page as a numbered footnote to the title or to the individual author's name. List number of words in Abstrac and intext (excluding legends and references), number of figures and tables. Titles should be less than 100 characters; if the article title exceeds 45 characters, supply an abbreviated running title on the title page. Manuscripts should be typed double-spaced throughout, on one side only of 8?x 11 in. paper. Begin sections for reference lists, footnotes, tables, and figure legends on separate pages. Figures and Tables should be numbered in the order of their mention with Arabic numerals and should have brief descriptions. Acronyms must be spelled out on first use in text and in table title or footnote. Acknowledgments for personal and technical assistance should follow the Discussion section and precede the Reference section.
A cover letter should accompany each submission, with note of compliance with submission requirements. For new submissions, names of 6 suggested referees should be included; for submissions of revised work, the manuscript number should be included.

Electronic Submission Manuscript text, including tables, references, and appendices should be in a single file, saved in Rich Text Format (RTF). Illustrations should be saved individually in JPG format. A separate file, containing title page and abstract only should also be saved in RTF. E-mail cover letter, with saved files as attachments or enclosures to biol.psych@UTSouthwestern.edu.

Hard-copy Submission Submit six copies of the manuscript including all illustrations and tables. Two 3? computer disks should accompany each manuscript submitted. One should contain the title page and abstract only and the second one should contain an exact copy of the hard-copy manuscript, including title page, abstract, text, references, tables, appendices, and figure legends. Both disks should be saved in Rich Text Format (RTF) and labeled with manuscript number (if resubmitted), first author's name, word processing program, format (PC or Mac), and contents (Abstract or complete manuscript).

ILLUSTRATIONS Figures should be numbered with arabic numerals in order of their mention. Avoid 1a, 1b, 1c numbering; numerical sequence and separate captions are preferred. Two or more figures that are to appear together should be cited together on same manuscript page. Color illustrations are accepted, although the cost of color printing must be paid by the author.

Electronic Submission Each figure or panel of multi-paneled figures should be saved separately with figure number as part of the file name. Images should be of at least 300 dpi or 500 dpi if lettering is included in the graphic, larger than the desired reproduction size, and in JPG or GIF format. Authors should be prepared to submit hard-copy illustrations if required for typesetting.
Hard-copy Submission For line artwork, submit black-ink drawings of professional quality or glossies of originals on separate sheets. Original photos of histological sections, tissues, chromatograms, radiological images, etc., and figures containing color are required for each manuscript copy. On the back of each illustration, give first author's name, figure number, and indication of "top."

REFERENCES List references alphabetically at the end of the manuscript. Refer to references in the text with the surname of the author and the year of publication. The name and date are enclosed in parentheses. The following are sample references for a journal article (Pearlson et al 1997), a book (American Psychiatric Association 1994), and an edited book (Martin 1985).

Pearlson GD, Barta PE, Powers RE (1997): Medial and superior temporal gyral volumes and cerebral asymmetry in schizophrenia versus bipolar disorder. Biol Psychiatry 41:1-14.

If there are more than seven authors, list the first six then et al. Periodical abbreviations should follow those used by Index Medicus.

PROOFS AND REPRINTS The corresponding author will receive proofs generally within 4-6 weeks of acceptance, which must be corrected and returned within 48 hours of receipt. The original manuscript will accompany proofs and must be returned with proofs. Reprints may be ordered prior to publication using a reprint form provided by the publisher. Reprints will be sent approximately eight weeks following publication.
