Instructions to Authors
The Annals of Neurology publishes articles on all aspects of the human nervous system, both normal and abnormal, and studies of other species that bear upon the mechanisms or treatment of human neurological disorders.
Editorial Policies
1. Submissions must not be under consideration by any other journal or published previously (apart from abstracts).
2. Transfer of copyright to Wiley-Liss, Inc., a Wiley company, is a condition of publication.
3. Experimental studies of humans require that the protocol has received prior approval by the appropriate body and that informed consent was obtained from each subject. Animal experimentation must also receive institutional approval and be conducted in accordance with the United States Public Health Service's Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. Submissions from abroad must include evidence that the human and animal research complies with the standards in force in the country of origin.
4. Clinical trial reports must be written in accordance with the CONSORT reporting guidelines (Download PDF file - 110K). See May 1997 issue, pages 569-573.
5. Potential financial interests must be disclosed to the Editor in the covering letter. Funding sources supporting the work should be cited. Authors must disclose commercial considerations, such as an equity interest, patent rights, or corporate affiliations, including consultantships, for any product or process mentioned in the submission. This information will be acknowledged at publication in a format agreeable to both the Editor and the responsible author. Rejection of the manuscript or retraction may occur if undisclosed financial interests are found after publication.
6. Lists of authors are limited to 25 (in accordance with Medline). Statements of equal authorship contribution will not be included.
7. Authorships attributed only to a group (e.g., the Meningitis Study Group) are not accepted. At least one person's name must precede the group as "Tom Jones for the Meningitis Study Group."
8. The Annals will consider for publication:
Original Articles. No limit is set on length, but economy of style is important in the decision to accept.
Brief Communications. These should be less than 1,500 words, have 20 references or fewer, and have no more than a total of three tables or illustrations.
Letters to the Editor and Replies. These should be less than 400 words (fewer than 40 lines) and may include one table or figure if essential, tailored to fit column width (8 cm), and 5 or fewer references.
Study of a single patient generally should be in the Brief Communication or Letter format. Review articles will be considered either as Brief Reviews (1,000-2,000 words; up to 40 references) or Neurological Progress articles (2,000-3,500 words; up to 80 references). Editorials (less than 1,000 words), book reviews (less than 500 words), Point of View, History of Neurology, and other special communications are also published.
9. Occasionally expedited review and publication of a paper are recommended by the Editor.
Manuscript Preparation
?Submit three high-quality copies of the manuscripts, including Letters and Replies. Type (or laser-print) entire manuscript, including references, tables, and figure legends, double-spaced on standard-sized, good-quality white bond, using ample margins. Number pages consecutively in this order: title page, abstract, text, acknowledgments and support lines, references, tables, legends. Place first author's name and page number in the upper right corner of all pages. Manuscripts by authors whose first language is not English should be edited for fluency in English. Authors are strongly encouraged to submit their manuscripts in electronic format; please see Guidelines for Disk Submission.
?A cover letter should specify: (1) type of submission (Original Article, etc); (2) responsible author and complete mailing address, telephone and fax numbers, and e-mail address; (3) a statement by the responsible author certifying that all coauthors have seen and agree with the contents of the manuscript (this requirement is absolute); (4) disclosure of any financial interest; (5) (optional) names of potential reviewers and any request that a specific individual not be invited to review.
?On the title page provide a title of 80 spaces or less. List each author's name (include first name, middle initial, and last name), highest degree, institutional affiliation, address, and telecommunication numbers. Indicate the corresponding author, and provide an e-mail address. Provide a brief running-head title. List the number of references, figures, and tables, and the word count for the title, abstract, and text.
?Provide an abstract of approximately 10-18 lines (up to 200 words) for an Original Article or Review. Abstracts for Brief Communications should be short, no more than 5-6 lines.
References
Wiley's Journal Styles Are Now in EndNote EndNote is a software product that we recommend to our journal authors to help simplify and streamline the research process. Using EndNote's bibliographic management tools, you can search bibliographic databases, build and organize your reference collection, and then instantly output your bibliography in any Wiley journal style. Download Reference Style for this Journal: If you already use EndNote, you can download the reference style for this journal. How to Order: To learn more about EndNote, or to purchase your own copy, click here. Technical Support: If you need assistance using EndNote, contact endnote@isiresearchsoft.com, or visit www.endnote.com/support.
?Type references double-spaced throughout. List up to four authors; if more than four, list three and "et al." Arrange in order of citation, and cite all references by number in the text, superscript and without brackets. Please check all references for errors of citation or attribution.
?Use Index Medicus reference style, giving complete publication data. See a recent issue of the Annals or the journal's homepage for the correct reference style.
?For any reference cited as "in press," a copy of the article must accompany the author's manuscript. Unpublished data (which include articles submitted but not in press) and personal communications must be given in parentheses in the text, not as references.
Tables
?Type tables double-spaced on pages separate from the text. Number pages consecutively with text and provide a table number and title for each. Hold length to one standard-sized manuscript page if possible. If a table continues past one page, repeat all heads. Tables should be numbered in order of citation in the text. Do not use photocopy reduction. Data in tables should not duplicate material in the text or illustrations.
Figures
?Submit one set of high-contrast, glossy, black-and-white illustrations. Enclose two more sets of prints or photocopies for the reviewers. The Annals cannot return artwork; therefore, authors should keep negatives of all prints. Figures should have a label on the back indicating top, figure number, and first author. Do not attach figures to paper or use paper clips. See Guidelines for Disk Submission for detailed instructions for submitting figures electronically.
?Graphs, diagrams, and line drawings should be 8 cm in width (column width). Labeling should be legible after reduction to column width. Photomicrographs should be cropped to column width unless full-page width (17 cm) is required.
?Photographs of recognizable persons should be accompanied by a signed release from the patient or legal guardian authorizing publication. Masking eyes to hide identity is not sufficient.
?Color figures may be accepted for publication. Part of the reproduction and printing costs will be paid by the Annals. The charge to authors is $1,000 for the first page of color and $500 for each additional page containing color illustrations. All color figures will be reproduced in full color in the online edition of the journal at no cost to authors. Color prints should contain any necessary internal labeling (eg, arrows, bars).
Figure Legends
?Type double-spaced on pages separate from the text. Do not paste or fasten legends and figures together. Provide one legend for each figure, and number legends in sequence. Number legend pages consecutively with the text. For photomicrographs indicate the stain and use an internal scale marker.
Proofs
?Authors will see only page proofs, not copyedited manuscript.
Electronic Proofing To expedite our publication schedule, page proofs are available in .pdf format. Files in this format are viewed using Adobe Acrobat Reader, which is available as a free download at http://www.adobe.com. Page proofs will be available for review approximately 4 weeks from acceptance. You will receive information about file access (via ftp or Internet browser) directly from the typesetters. If you do not wish to receive page proofs in .pdf format, traditional, hard-copy page proofs will be sent via express service. In either case, proof corrections should be returned immediately by fax, e-mail, or express mail. Please notify us of your preferred proof delivery method when submitting your final manuscript. Indicate in your cover letter your page proof choice: ELECTRONIC (pdf) or TRADITIONAL (paper).
Credits and Permissions
?We require (1) notice of informed consent; (2) releases to publish photographs of recognizable persons; and (3) written permission to use nonoriginal material (quotations exceeding 100 words, any table or illustration) from both author and publisher of the original. No article will be accepted without all required permissions. Credit the source in a text or table footnote or in a legend.
Statistics
?Identify in the Methods section any statistical procedures used. The rationale for choosing the particular statistical methods should be stated if the procedure is not standard for the type of data or is controversial.
?Send submissions to:
R. T. Johnson, Editor, Annals of Neurology 3103 N. Charles Street Second Floor Baltimore, MD 21218 tel: (410) 261-3637; fax: (410) 261-3641 An acknowledgment card will be mailed on receipt of your submission.
