About the journal

The Annales Scientifiques de l'École Normale Supérieure were founded in 1864 by Louis Pasteur who was at that time Director of Scientific Studies at the École Normale Supérieure. Besides mathematics, the journal dealt with subjects touching on physics, chemistry and natural sciences. For many years, its editorial committee was composed of Professors at the École. Around the turn of the century, it was decided that the journal should be devoted to mathematics. Among the members of the different Editorial Committees, were: in 1869: C. Briot, C. Hermite and J.–V. Puiseux. in 1900: P. Appel, E. Borel, E. Goursat, G. Koenigs, E. Picard, J. Tannery, J. Bertrand, G. Darboux, C. Hermite, P. Painlevé and L. Raffy. in 1939: E. Borel, E. Cartan, J. Hadamard, G. Julia, H. Lebesgue, P. Montel, E. Picard and E. Vessiot. in 1969: F. Bruhat, H. Cartan, A. Lichnerowicz, J.–L. Lions and J.–P. Serre. in 1986: A. Beauville, J.–M. Bismut, M. Duflo, M. Gromov, J.–P. Labesse, J. Sjöstrand, A.S. Sznitman and B. Teissier.
In principle, the Annales cover all fields of mathematics. The Editorial Committee, with the help of referees, attracts and selects articles which are mathematically very substantial and maintains a tradition of clarity and rigour in the exposition.
Instructions to Authors
Submission of articles Articles must be written in either French, English, German or Italian. Articles may be submitted (in duplicate) to the secretariat or to any of the editors.
Secretariat Annales Sceintifiques de l'Ecole Normale Superieure 45, rue d'Ulm 75230 Paris Cedex 05 France
When submitting a manuscript, it is essential to give the address, telephone number and e-mail address of the author who will correct the proofs.
Submission of an article implies that the work described has not been published previously (except in the form of an abstract or as part of a published lecture or academic thesis), that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, that its publication is approved by all authors and tacitly or explicitly by the responsible authorities where the work was carried out, and that, if accepted, it will not be published elsewhere in the same form, in French or in any other language, without the written consent of the Publisher.
Upon acceptance of an article, authors will be asked to transfer copyright (for more information on copyright see http://authors.elsevier.com). This transfer will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information. A letter will be sent to the corresponding author confirming receipt of the manuscript. A form facilitating transfer of copyright will be provided. If excerpts from other copyrighted works are included, the author(s) must obtain written permission from the copyright owners and credit the source(s) in the article. Elsevier has preprinted forms for use by authors in these cases: contact Elsevier Global Rights Department, P.O. Box 800, Oxford, OX5 1DX, UK; phone: (+44) 1865 843830, fax: (+44) 1865 853333, e-mail: permissions@elsevier.com
Presentation of your Manuscript Abstract A concise and factual abstract is required in English (maximum length 150 words). The abstract should state briefly the purpose of the research, the principal results and major conclusions. An abstract is often presented separate from the article, so it must be able to stand alone.
Titles in French must be supplied with an English translation. Titles in English, German or Italian must have a French translation.
Manuscripts can either be prepared using a TeX typesetting system or in typewritten form.
LaTeX In this case, a paper version of the manuscript will first be sent (the author must indicate that it has been processed in TeX). If accepted, the Committee will request the TeX file which must be identical to the accepted version on paper.
Figures may be inserted in the usual way using an \includegraphics command, at the position in the article where they are cited.
Your LaTeX file will be most useful as input for the printed article if you obey the following rules of thumb:
Be consistent. If you use a macro for a phrase, use it throughout.
Use the standard LaTeX mark-up. Do not hardcode your own layout, for example with section headings, but use the usual LaTex macro for this purpose.
Keep it simple. Do not define macros to create a complicated layout, as these will also make the input process complicated.
Typewritten Any instructions to the printer should be written on a separate sheet of paper along with the author's address and attached to the manuscript.
Proofs When your manuscript is received by the Publisher it is considered to be in its final form. Proofs are not to be regarded as 'drafts'.
One set of proofs in will be sent to the corresponding author, to be checked for typesetting/editing. No changes in, or additions to, the accepted (and subsequently edited) manuscript will be allowed at this stage. Any modifications or corrections marked on the proof, other than typographic errors, will be paid for by the author. Proofreading is solely your responsibility.
Corrections must be returned within five days of receipt of the proofs. Should there be no need for corrections, please confirm this. The publisher reserves the right to proceed with publication if corrections are not communicated.
