About the journal
Mission To publish the results of original research in the broad range of scientific areas represented in the Academia Brasileira de Ciências.
ISSN 0001-3765 printed version ISSN 1678-2690 online version
The Anais da Academia Brasileira de Ciências (Annals of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences) is the official journal of Academia Brasileira de Ciências (Brazilian Academy of Sciences) and has been published with no major interruptions since 1929 (it was termed Revista da Sociedade Brasileira de Sciencias from 1917 to 1919, and published irregularly as Revista de Sciencias from 1920 to 1928).
The main objective of the Anais is to publish original research findings in the fields covered by the Academy. The Editorial Board coordinates and evaluates the articles to be published. Volumes are published in a quarterly basis. Following the editorial board's recommendation, issues on special themes are published as Supplements to the Annals.
The abbreviated title of the journal is An Acad Bras Cienc, which should be used in bibliographies, footnotes and bibliographical references and strips.
Instructions to Authors
MANUSCRIPT PREPARATION. The authors should, in principle, send their manuscript both in printed and in electronic form, in the last case using separate files for text and for figures. Failure to send an electronic version should be justified in the cover letter. Authors that have no proficiency in the appropriate computer programs should contact the Assessoria de Publicações.
Four copies of the manuscript, with inserted page numbers, should be sent on A4 or letter size paper, double-spaced with ample margins. One original and three high quality copies must be provided. In principle, the text of Articles should contain up to 4,500 words (references not included) but lengthier manuscripts may be published at no additional cost at the discretion of the Editorial Board.
Tables and Illustrations. Tables and Illustrations should also be sent in quadruplicate on separate pages, numbered and identified on the reverse side with soft pencil. Their tentative placement in the text should be indicated. Only high-quality illustrations will be accepted. All illustrations will be considered figures including drawings, graphs, maps, photographs as well as tables with more than 12 columns or more than 24 lines (maximum of 5 figures free of charge). Drawings, graphs and maps must be reproduced on good quality paper. Photographs must be printed on glossy paper.
Digitalized figures. Figures should be sent according to the following specifications: 1. Drawings and illustrations should be in format .PS/.EPS or .CDR (PostScriptum or Corel Draw) and never be inserted in text; 2. Images or figures in grayscale should be in format .TIF and never be inserted in text; 3. Each figure should be saved in a separate file, files may be sent in floppy or in Zip disks; 4. Figures should, in principle, be submitted at the size they are to appear in the Anais, i.e., 7.2 cm (one column) or 15 cm (two columns) wide, with maximal height for each figure and respective legend smaller than or equal to 20 cm. The legends to the figures should be sent double-spaced on a separate page. Each linear dimension of the smallest characters and symbols should not be less than 2 mm after reduction. Only black and white figures will be accepted; 5. Manuscripts on Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry may be typesetted in TEX, AMS-TEX or LaTEX; 6. Manuscripts without mathematical formulae may be sent in .RTF or WORD for Windows.
Front page. The front page of the manuscript should present the following items: 1. Title of the article; 2. Full name(s) of the author(s); 3. Professional address of each author; 4. Key words (four to six); 5. Running title (up to 50 characters); 6. Academy Section to which the content of the work belongs; 7. Name, address, fax and/or e-mail of the author to whom all correspondence, proofs, etc. should be sent.
References. The references should be cited in the text as, for example, (Smith 1978), (Smith and Wesson 1979) or, for three or more authors, (Smith et al. 1980). Two or more papers by the same author(s) in the same year should be distinguished by letters, e.g. (Smith 1978a), (Smith 1978b) etc. Letters should also distinguish papers by three or more authors with identical first author and year of publication (see example).
References should be listed according to the alphabetical order of the first author. All authors of a given paper should be listed in the respective reference, always in the order SURNAME XY in which X and Y are initials. References must contain the title of the article. Names of the journals should be abbreviated. For the correct abbreviations, refer to lists of the major data bases in which the journal is indexed: ISI Science Citation Index, Index Medicus Medline, Chemical Abstracts, Bibliography and Index of Geology, INIST, etc or consult the "World List of Periodicals" published by Butterworks, London. The abbreviation to be used for the Anais is An Acad Bras Cienc. Personal communications or work in preparation should be cited in the text only and should not appear in the list of References. Papers in press or already accepted and some submitted papers may, however, be included in this list (inclusion of submitted papers requires approval by the Editorial Board). Citation of unpublished theses should be kept at a minimum.
The following examples are to be considered as guidelines for the References.
