Instructions to Authors
The American Journal of the Medical Sciences considers manuscripts reporting original clinical or laboratory investigations, reviews and case reports. Papers on all subspecialties are invited. Each manuscript must be accompanied by a statement indicating that the material has not been previously published elsewhere and is being considered solely by AJMS. In addition, the submission must be accompanied by a completed copyright transfer form. All clinical research should be conducted in accordance with the guiding principles for human experimentation summarized in the latest version of the Helsinki Declaration. When reporting experiments on animals, indicate which guideline on the care and use of laboratory animals was followed. Include permission to reproduce previously published material or to use illustrations that may identify human subjects.
Manuscripts All manuscripts should be submitted electronically with appropriate attachments, i.e. figures and tables. The page size configuration should be 8 ½" x 11". The entire manuscript should be typed double—space with 1-inch margins. All pages should be numbered, including the title page. The format should be as follows: title page, abstract, introduction, methods, results, discussion, acknowledgments, references, tables (each on a separate page), figure legends and figures. Begin each section or component on a new page. Figures should be no larger than 8 x 10 inches. Use Arabic numerals.
Compliance with NIH and Other Research Funding Agency Accessibility Requirements A number of research funding agencies now require or request authors to submit the post-print (the article after peer review and acceptance but not the final published article) to a repository that is accessible online without charge. As a service to our authors, Lippincott Williams & Wilkins will identify to the National Library of Medicine (NLM) articles that require deposit and will transmit the post-print of an article based on research funded in whole or in part by the National Institutes of Health, Wellcome Trust, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, or other funding agencies to PubMed Central. The revised Copyright Transfer Agreement provides the mechanism.
Images in the Medical Sciences This section will contain one or more images with a short narrative description of the image and its relationship to the clinical case. The goal of this series is to display an important or unique pictorial representation of a disease, e.g. x-ray, biopsy or photograph. The discussion should be limited to one relatively short paragraph with no more than 1 or 2 references, such that the image or images and the text together do not exceed 1 published manuscript pages. An abstract is not required.
Cover Letter The cover letter should include: (1) full title of the paper; (2) full authorship and all institutional affiliations; (3) clear statement that the paper has not been submitted elsewhere, is not under review, or published previously, except in abstract form; (4) any possible conflict of interest should be clearly stated; and (5) a statement to the effect of "all the authorship are aware of and approve the manuscript being submitted to this journal".
Title Page The title page should carry (1) the title of the article, which should be concise but informative; (2) each author's name, with his or her highest academic degree and institutional affiliation; (3) the name, address, phone, fax and e-mail address of the corresponding author; (4) sources of support in the form of grants, equipment, or drugs, including any funding received for this work from any of the following organizations: National Institutes of Health (NIH), Wellcome Trust, Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), or other(s); (5) disclaimers, if any, including notices of the manuscript's prior appearance as a preliminary report or abstract; and (6) a short title of no more than 40 characters and spaces.
Abstract The abstract should not exceed 150 words [250 words for structured abstracts (Background, Methods, Results, Conclusions), which are required for reports of original investigations]. The abstract should state the purposes of the study or investigation, basic procedures, main findings and the principal conclusions. It should emphasize new and important aspects of the study.
Key Words A list of no more than 5 key words or short phrases that will assist in cross-indexing should be provided.
References References should be numbered consecutively in the order in which they are first mentioned in the text. There should be no more than 40 references. Identify references in text, tables, and legends by superscript Arabic numerals. Avoid using abstracts as references. References to papers accepted but not yet published should be designated as “in press”; authors should obtain written permission to cite such papers as well as verification that they have been accepted for publication. Information from manuscripts submitted but not accepted should be cited in the text as “unpublished observations” with written permission from the source. Avoid citing a personal communication unless it provides essential information not available from a public source, in which case the name of the person and date of communication should be cited in parentheses in the text. Authors should obtain written permission and confirmation of accuracy from the source. The permission document should be submitted with the manuscript Use the style of the examples below. In all cases, list the first three authors and/or editors, followed by “et al.” The titles of journals should be abbreviated according to the style used in Index Medicus. Abbreviations can be obtained from PubMed <http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?db=PubMed>.

Figures Number figures consecutively in the order of their first citation in the text. Please reference “5 Steps to Creating Digital Artwork (pdf)” available at www.editorialmanager.com/maj/, specifically steps 2 and 3, when creating figures for submission. Sharp, black-and-white photographic images, no larger than 8 x 10 inches, are preferred. Letters, numbers, and symbols should be clear and even throughout and of sufficient size that each item will still be legible when reduced for publication. Titles and detailed explanations belong in the legends for figures, not on the figures themselves. Photomicrographs should have internal scale markers; symbols, arrows or letters used should contrast with the background. If photographs of people are used, the subjects must be unidentifiable or the subjects must have provided written permission to use the photograph. This permission document should also be submitted with the manuscript. If a figure has been published, acknowledge the original source and submit written permission from the copyright holder to reproduce the material. Permission is required irrespective of authorship or publisher, except for documents in the public domain.
Supplemental Digital Content
Supplemental Digital Content (SDC): Authors may submit SDC via Editorial Manager to LWW journals that enhance their article's text to be considered for online posting. SDC may include standard media such as text documents, graphs, audio, video, etc. On the Attach Files page of the submission process, please select Supplemental Audio, Video, or Data for your uploaded file as the Submission Item. If an article with SDC is accepted, our production staff will create a URL with the SDC file. The URL will be placed in the call-out within the article. SDC files are not copy-edited by LWW staff, they will be presented digitally as submitted. For a list of all available file types and detailed instructions, please visit http://links.lww.com/A142.
SDC Call-outs Supplemental Digital Content must be cited consecutively in the text of the submitted manuscript. Citations should include the type of material submitted (Audio, Figure, Table, etc.), be clearly labeled as "Supplemental Digital Content," include the sequential list number, and provide a description of the supplemental content. All descriptive text should be included in the call-out as it will not appear elsewhere in the article. Example: We performed many tests on the degrees of flexibility in the elbow (see Video, Supplemental Digital Content 1, which demonstrates elbow flexibility) and found our results inconclusive.
List of Supplemental Digital Content A listing of Supplemental Digital Content must be submitted at the end of the manuscript file. Include the SDC number and file type of the Supplemental Digital Content. This text will be removed by our production staff and not be published. Example: Supplemental Digital Content 1. wmv
SDC File Requirements All acceptable file types are permissible up to 10 MBs. For audio or video files greater than 10 MBs, authors should first query the journal office for approval. For a list of all available file types and detailed instructions, please visit http://links.lww.com/A142.
Tables Submit each table, double-spaced, as a separate document. Number tables consecutively in the order of their first citation in the text and supply a brief title for each. Be sure that each table is cited in the text. Do not use internal horizontal and vertical rules. Place explanatory matter in footnotes, not in the heading. Explain in footnotes all abbreviations used in each table. For footnotes, use superscript lowercase letters. If you use data from another published or unpublished source, obtain permission and acknowledge them fully.
Abbreviations and Nomenclature Abbreviations and nomenclature should conform to the American Medical Association Manual of Style, 9th ed. Abbreviations should be kept to a minimum in the text and should be defined at first usage. Periods are not used after abbreviations (eg, mm, mL). Generic names are preferred for drugs. Use of SI (Système International) units is preferred but not required.
Submit Manuscripts On-Line To:
http://www.editorialmanager.com/maj/
Please do not submit hard-copy manuscripts as they will not be entered into the system or returned to the author.
Page Charges Authors will be billed a publication page rate of $40 per printed page. Authors will also be charged for color figures. Page charges and color charges will be billed by, and are payable to, the publisher.
