About the journal
Advanced Materials is the top journal in the materials sciences, with the highest independently assessed Impact Factor of any professional, peer-reviewed primary materials science journal.
It contains carefully selected, top-quality reviews, communications, and research news at the cutting edge of the chemistry and physics of functional materials as well as book reviews, product information, and a conference calendar.
Since mid-1995 the journal "Chemical Vapor Deposition" has been published six times a year in Advanced Materials, providing original research papers (reviews, full papers, communications) and news and views concerning all aspects of CVD.
Instructions to Authors
Advanced Materials (AM) and Advanced Functional Materials (AFM) are international peer-reviewed journals that cover all aspects of high-tech materials chemistry and physics. For topics and categories of contributions, please see the table.

[a] Essays, Materials Forum, Book Reviews, Conference Calendar, Letters to the Editor, Interviews
Only manuscripts in English are accepted. No page charge is levied. Contributors should bear the interdisciplinary nature of the readership in mind, always emphasizing the importance of the topic to workers in other fields.
Manuscript Submission
The manuscript should be submitted online via the journal home page (see table for web address) by clicking on Online Submission in the right hand menu, and following the simple instructions. In order to submit a manuscript you will need a single Microsoft Word file that contains the text and all figures and tables integrated at the place in the text at which they are mentioned.
Confirmation of Receipt/Assessment
Authors of all articles will receive acknowledgement of receipt of their manuscript. All contributions are subject to refereeing and/or assessment by the editors. Contributions to all sections, except Communications, Full Papers, and Materials Forum, are usually written on invitation. Authors are welcome to submit unsolicited articles but should consult the editors as early as possible.
Electronic Data
Only after notification of acceptance for publication will you be asked to provide separate electronic files of the text and figures for high-quality production. The version you send should be the revised version, if applicable. The software and hardware used should be specified (including the number of the version of the word-processing program). Microsoft Word is preferred. Please also send the text as an RTF file. Tables and line drawings/graphs should be sent in separate Word files. Gray-scale and color figures should be supplied in electronic form, saved using the software they were created in and also as TIF or EPS files if possible. Please refer to the guidelines for the submission of graphical material for further details.
Reprints can be ordered when the proofs are returned to the publisher. Reprint rates are also available from the editorial office on request.
Categories of Contributions:
Essays are a forum for news and opinion on topics of national and international interest. This can include, for example, news of funding and research organizations, societies, or points of controversy within materials science. Manuscripts should be 4-5 pages in length plus one display item (tables and figures). A passport-type photo and a short summary of the career to-date of the correspondence author(s) should be included.
Review Articles are peer-reviewed and give a general overview of a particular field, providing the reader with an appreciation of the importance of the work, a summary of recent developments, and a starting point in the specialist literature. Manuscripts should be between 20 and 30 pages in length, divided into appropriate sections, and contain 15-20 display items. A passport-type photo and a short summary of the career to-date of the correspondence author(s) should be included, as well as a short abstract and five keywords.
Feature Articles are concise descriptions of recent research developments written by the scientists personally responsible for much of the research described. They not only give an overview of work published to date, but may also contain new, previously unpublished results. Through these articles the non-specialist will gain an appreciation of the importance of the work and a starting point in the specialist literature. Manuscripts should be no more than 15 to 20 pages in length, contain up to 9-12 display items, and be divided up into appropriate sections, including an experimental section if new results are presented. A passport-type photo and a short summary of the career to-date of the correspondence author(s) should be included. A short abstract and a maximum of five keywords should be given at the top of the manuscript.
Communications are unsolicited, peer-reviewed short reports of outstanding novel findings which also have important and general implications for specialists working in other fields. The first paragraph should summarize the reasons for undertaking the work and the main conclusions which can be drawn. The final paragraph should summarize the major conclusions of the paper. Manuscripts should be up to 7 pages in length and can have up to 3 display items. A maximum of five keywords should be supplied.
Full Papers must either be of current general interest or of great significance to a more specialized readership. They are peer-reviewed and report details of studies that have not been published previously, except in the form of a preliminary communication (reprint requested). Manuscripts should be between 15 and 20 pages in length, contain 9-12 display items, and be divided into sections in the following order: introduction, results, discussion, conclusions, experimental, references. A short abstract and a maximum of five keywords should be given at the top of the manuscript.
Research News Articles are intended to inform non-specialist readers of recent developments at the forefront of materials science and technology. Manuscripts should be 4-5 pages in length and can contain up to 3 display items. A short abstract and a maximum of five keywords should be included.
Highlights describe either very important new results at the forefront of materials science and technology or functional materials that have been successfully integrated into our society. They are generally written by a third person (not the person who carried out the research) with a view to instruct the reader and highlight the significance of the work. Manuscripts should be 4-5 pages in length and can contain up to 3 display items. A short abstract and a maximum of five keywords should be given at the top of the manuscript.
Letters to the Editor commenting on publications in the journals are welcome if they contribute to the scientific discussion.
Materials Forum contains short news items, correspondence, and product and conference information. Single-page manuscripts, with or without a display item, are welcome.
Book/Journal/Software Reviews are usually written on request, but suggestions are always welcome. Publishers should send relevant books to the Book Review Editor. Unsolicited books not selected for review will not be returned.
Manuscript Styling
Manuscripts should be typed, with double line spacing. The first names, other initials, and surnames of all authors should be given, along with full postal addresses, as well as the fax number and e-mail address of the correspondence author, who should be designated by a star. For online submission figures, tables, and legends should be included in the text, inserted at the place they are first mentioned. For revised manuscripts, the figures should be stored separately. Gray-scale and color figures should be saved as TIFF files.
IUPAC nomenclature should be used when naming compounds. A full guide to nomenclature and terminology can be found at the IUPAC web site (http://www.iupac.org).
Data from X-ray structure analyses should be deposited with the CCDC for organic and organometallic compounds and at the FIZ for inorganic compounds prior to manuscript submission. For further details refer to the guidelines for deposition of X-ray data.
Special Symbols Only use an equation editor for equations. Do not import special symbols and characters as graphics in the running text. Please use either the Symbol font or the "insert special symbol" option provided with most word processing programs.
Artwork Figures with several parts are permitted only if the parts are closely related either experimentally or logically. Please avoid displaying graphs as an inset. Data formats that can be read into Microsoft Word are acceptable for submission purposes. Once the article has been accepted by the editors for publication, original artwork will be required (see the guidelines for the submission of graphical material). Suggestions can be made for cover picture designs.
Color Artwork can be reproduced. The extra costs associated with this are expected to be met, in part, by the author. The author will be advised of the costs on acceptance of the manuscript for publication.
Tables should be subdivided by three horizontal lines only (two marking the header, one at the base). Footnotes in tables are denoted [a], [b], [c], etc.
References should be numbered sequentially as they appear in the text[1] as superscripts in square brackets.[2-5] Only papers that are published or in press should be referenced. The footnote and endnote options provided by many text programs should not be used. Journal titles should be abbreviated according to the Chemical Abstracts Service Source Index (CASSI). In citing the literature, the format below should be followed as an example:
[1] a) C. D. Dimitrakopoulos, P. R. L. Malenfant, Adv. Mater. 2002, 14, 99. b) M. R. Robinson, S. Wang, A. J. Heeger, G. C. Bazan, Adv. Funct. Mater. 2001, 11, 413.
