About the journal
ACTA VETERINARIA SCANDINAVICA
is a quarterly research journal published jointly by the veterinary associations of the Nordic countries.
Acta veterinaria scandinavica publishes original manuscripts in English on all aspects of veterinary research submitted by Nordic researchers or from Nordic institutions.
Instructions to Authors
Manuscripts should follow the instructions and guidelines given.
Manuscripts received will be reviewed by members of the Editorial Board or by selected scientific referees and are subsequently accepted for publication conditional on recommendations by the Editorial Board.
Instructions and guidelines for contributors to Acta veterinaria scandinavica:
It is assumed that the manuscripts submitted are original and will not be offered to other journals. Manuscripts should be submitted in 2 copies and on a disk (in any major textprocessing formats or in the ASCII format) - and in a form ready to print. The text should be double spaced with a broad margin (not less than 5 cm). The author will be charged DKK 350 per page for the first 8 pages and DKK 1000 per following page. This includes 200 reprints of the final article. Additional reprints can be ordered at extra costs. Manuscripts should appear in English and in a concise form comprising:
- Abstract, not exceeding one-half printed page, i.e. approx. 200 words.
- Key words and descriptors to supplement the title; 10-20 items are recommended.
- Brief introduction including references to relevant literature.
- Brief description of the material under study and methods employed.
- Presentation of results obtained.
- Discussion of results.
- Conclusions (optional).
- References given alphabetically according to authors and containing the full title in the original language, translation into English of titles in other languages than English, the title of the journal (abbreviated according to World Medical Periodicals, published by World Medical Association), year, volume and the numbers of the first and last pages. For books, name and city of publisher and year of publication are given.
- Summary in a Scandinavian language.
Brief communications in English are accepted for publication with short notice in a separate section of the journal. This section is for the announcement of new findings that may help other scientists, invention of research devices, and for information from research programmes of long duration. Such communications must not exceed 4 printed pages. There should be no summary, and no key words, and a few relevant references may be included.
Tables and illustrations should be submitted on separate sheets with arabic numerals corresponding to the sequence in the text. The tables and illustrations should not comprise more than 1/4 of the total number of pages. Excessive tables and illustrations and material to be printed on glossy paper as well as colour prints are accepted when authors assume the costs concerned. However, Acta vet. scand. has decided to subsidice 65% of the costs for colour prints.
The tables should be intelligible without reference to the text, the contents being described briefly in the table heading.
Tables should be typed with double space and each column should have a short or abbreviated heading. Place explanatory matters in footnotes and explain in footnotes all non-standard abbreviations that are used in the table. For graded issues -, +, ++, +++ can be used. Statistical significance is designated with one, two or three asterisks for 5, 1 and 0.1 per cent significance levels respectively.
Drawn figures should be simple and easy to understand, and should be submitted as original drawings, letters and symbols being sufficiently large to allow for reduction when printed.
Photographs should be sharp, glossy and in black-and-white prints, usually in 12.7 by 17.8 cm but not larger than 17.8 by 24.0 cm. When more than a few photographic prints are used, paste them, if possible, as a set up on a card board. Each figure should have a label on its back indicating the number of the figure, the name of the authors and the top of the figure.
Legends to the figures should be on a separate page with arabic numerals corresponding to the illustrations. When symbols, arrows, numbers or letters are used to identify parts of the illustrations, explain each clearly in the legend.
Manuscripts are accepted for publication after review and conditional on recommendations by the Editorial Board. Authors will be notified by the Chief Editor about final acceptance and expected time of publication. The expected time from final acceptance by the Chief Editor to publication is approximately 6 months.
Proofs are sent to the author and should be returned to the Chief Editor within 10 days. It is the author's responsibility to check the manuscript and proof. Extra costs due to corrections against the manuscript may be charged the authors. Manuscripts must accompany the proofs when returned.
