Instructions to Authors
All papers submitted to these publications are subject to rigorous peer review. It is our policy that a decision to publish or not is usually made within six months of submission.

FIRST MANUSCRIPTS

Submission of first manuscripts

Authors are requested to email their entire manuscript for referral purposes as a single PDF, i.e. a document containing all text and illustrations. Alternatively, authors may email a single Postscript file. The PDF must be accompanied by a message giving the title of the publication to which the paper is submitted, the authors of the submission, the name and address, including the email address of the corresponding author, and the number of words and illustrations in the document. Authors are advised to read the section "What we look for in your paper" and the guidelines for revised manuscripts before submitting their paper. Submissions should be emailed to proceedings@iee.org

Each paper must be relevant to the proposed publication title. The IEE reserves the right to transfer the paper for consideration by its other peer-reviewed publications. This would not require the completion of a new copyright assignment form. The author will be advised and may, of course, withdraw the paper from consideration.

What we look for in your paper

We want to help you get your paper accepted first time. Please use this checklist to help you ensure that your paper meets the standards we expect from submitted papers. (We ask our referees to look at these aspects when they review your paper.)

Scientific merit: is the work scientifically rigorous, accurate and correct?
Clarity: are ideas expressed clearly and concisely? Are the concepts understandable? Is the discussion written in a way that is easy to read and understand?
Referencing: has reference been made to the most recent and most appropriate work? Is the present work set in the context of the previous work? Is there a balance of references from archival material (journals and conferences) and informal but up to date sources (websites, manuals and reports)?
Balance: is the overall balance and structure of the paper is good? Should the authors concentrate more on a specific area of the paper, or are there sections which are unnecessary and which could be reduced or eliminated?
Appropriateness: is the material appropriate to the scope of the journal? English: is the English clear and well-written? Poorly written English may obscure the scientific merit of your paper.
Originality: is the work relevant and novel? Does the work contain significant additional material to that already published?
Motivation: does the problem considered have a sound motivation? All papers should clearly demonstrate the scientific interest of the results. Papers should not rely solely on previous literature or novelty to motivate publication.
Repetition: we ask our referees to alert us to repeated or duplicated material that may already have been published. Follow-up papers must contain significant additional new material to that already reported.
Length: is the content of the work of sufficient scientific interest to justify its length? No strict limit is placed on the length of submitted papers, although your article should be of the shortest length required to contain all useful and relevant information. Typically, manuscripts should be 3000-4000 words in length, including references, and should include not more than 10-12 illustrations.
Title: is it adequate and appropriate for the content of the article?
Abstract: does it contain the essential information of the article? Is it complete? Is it suitable for inclusion by itself in an abstracting service?
Diagrams, figures, tables and captions: are they clear and essential? Are all figures and tables labelled and referred to in the text?
Screenshots: can these be clearly read? If the lettering is too small, ensure that each picture is enlarged so that everything can be read.
Graphs and tables: are these clear and necessary? Where several graphs are on one axes, are they clearly distinguishable? Are the numbers in the tables readily understandable? Explanations should be in the caption, or in the immediately surrounding text.
Mathematics: is the mathematics necessary? Does it use commonly understood symbols? Are equations numbered if referred to in the text?
Related work: a separate section on related work is typically included. It can be at the end, or as part of the introduction and motivation at the beginning.
Conclusion: does the paper contain a carefully written conclusion, summarising what has been learned and why it is interesting and useful?

Copyright

All papers submitted to the IEE for publication must record original work not previously published in the open literature. The submission should not be under consideration for publication by any other journal or other publisher. Where this is practical, each author is asked to sign a completed Statement of Originality and Assignment of Copyright form. If this is not practical, the corresponding author may sign on behalf of all authors by indicating this next to their signature. Authors unable to include the form with their submission will be sent a copy for signature. In most instances, the IEE will not forward the paper to referees until the form is received. Each paper must demonstrate a significant development over previously published work or work under consideration elsewhere. Should the paper draw on previously published work, proper acknowledgement should be given by its citation. The authors should obtain, from the owners of the copyright, written permission to reproduce any illustration for which the copyright is not their own. The source of the illustration must be given in full and the words 'Reproduced by permission of .....' included with the illustration.

REVISED MANUSCRIPTS

Submission of revised manuscripts

Authors should submit their revised version in BOTH PDF and source file format to proceedings@iee.org. For production purposes, the source file should ideally be in one of the following formats:

  • Microsoft Word (.DOC or .RTF) (Windows or Macintosh)
  • ASCII (Windows or Macintosh) with a description of the version used
  • LaTeX (Unix or Linux)

Machine-readable illustrations are preferred in the following formats:

  • JPEG
  • TIFF (Windows, Macintosh or Unix)
  • The resolutions on these formats should be high, i.e. colour: minimum 400dpi, line: 1000dpi minimum, halftone: 300dpi minimum and combination 500dpi minimum
  • Encapsulated Postscript (EPS) - fonts to be included

Presentation of revised manuscripts

Each paper must be written in clear English. SI units should be used throughout. Manuscripts should be approximately 3000-4000 words in length, including references, and should include not more than 10-12 illustrations.

Papers should be arranged in the following order:
a. Title page with title of paper, name(s) of author(s) with affiliation(s), full postal address(es) of all authors
b. abstract of not more than 200 words outlining the purpose, scope and conclusions of the paper
c. text, suitably divided under headings and, where necessary, subheadings. Sections of papers should be numbered from the Introduction onwards, and decimal numbering (3.1, 3.2 etc.) should be used for subsections. It is generally preferable not to go beyond the second classification in this system. Equations should be numbered consecutively throughout the paper, including equations in the Appendix. Bold type should be used to distinguish vector or matrix symbols from scalar quantities. Typing should be in single column format with double line spacing on A4 (210mm x 297mm) with a margin of not less than 40mm on the left-hand side of the page and not less than 20 mm on the right-hand side. The font size must be at least 10 pt.
d. acknowledgements (if any)
e. list of references numbered in order of citation
f. appendices (if any)
g. set of tables with titles
h. list of captions to illustrations (on a separate page)
i. a separate set of copies of illustrations.

References

References should be indicated by Arabic numerals, which should run consecutively through the text. Where a reference is cited more than once, the same number should be used each time. References should include the names of all the authors (not 'et al.').
