The Department of Linguistics has strengths in many areas of theoretical, historical, and applied linguistics. Syntax, morphology, phonology, phonetics, and semantics are all well represented in the research interests of the faculty. Furthermore, there is a strong interest in the role of Linguistics in Cognitive Science, as reflected in the computational, psycholinguistic, neurolinguistic orientation of several faculty members. This conception puts research and teaching of individual languages or language families in the larger connection of the scientific study of language. Apart from courses in general linguistics, the department of linguistics offers specialized courses in English Language and Linguistics for a variety of BA-programmes such as British and American Studies, BA-Sprachwissenschaft, and 'Lehramt' (i.e. English Language Teaching). The University of Konstanz has established a large number of exchange programmes with universities all over the world and all visiting students are welcome to attend academic courses in linguistics in Konstanz appropriate to their level.
