The Southern Journal of Philosophy has long provided a forum for the expression of philosophical ideas written from all philosophical perspectives, including both the analytic and continental traditions, as well as the history of philosophy. This commitment to philosophical pluralism is reflected in the long list of notable figures whose work has appeared in the journal, including Hans-Georg Gadamer, Hubert Dreyfus, George Santayana, Wilfrid Sellars, and Richard Sorabji.
The jewel of each volume is the Spindel Supplement, which features the invited papers and commentaries presented at the annual Spindel Conference. Held each autumn at the University of Memphis and endowed by a generous gift from the Spindel family, each Spindel Conference centers on a philosophical topic of broad interest and provides a venue for discussion by the world’s leading figures on that topic. Contents of past Spindel Supplements are available here.

Instructions to Authors
Since 1963 The Southern Journal of Philosophy has demonstrated its commitment to philosophical pluralism by providing a forum for the expression of philosophical ideas written from a variety of perspectives. We welcome submissions that present original scholarship in analytic philosophy, continental philosophy, and the history of philosophy.
The Southern Journal of Philosophy is published quarterly—at the end of March, June, September, and December. The journal is intended as a forum for the expression of philosophical ideas, and the editors welcome papers written from all philosophical perspectives.
Submission Guidelines
-
Manuscripts should be submitted online at https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/sjp.
-
Submitted manuscripts should be in an editable format (e.g., .doc, .rtf), not .pdf. Exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis for manuscripts that include format-sensitive text (e.g., non-English languages, logical formulae).
-
While the SJP does not maintain a strict word limit, we prefer that submissions do not exceed 8,000 words (approximately 32 double-spaced pages, including notes and references).
-
Submissions must be accompanied by a brief abstract (approximately 150-200 words).
-
All references to the author (direct and indirect) must be removed in order to ensure blind review. Please check the body of the text, abstract, notes, and document meta-data to confirm the absence of any self-identifying references.
-
By submitting a manuscript to The Southern Journal of Philosophy, the author acknowledges that the work is original, has not previously appeared in print, and is not under consideration for publication elsewhere.

-
The SJP follows the current edition of The Chicago Manual of Style. For articles that are primarily historical or especially scholarly in nature, we accept the “humanities style” of citation. For most work in contemporary philosophy, we prefer the “author-date style” of citation. Further information (including common examples of materials cited in both styles) may be found here: http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/tools_citationguide.html.
-
Authors whose papers have been accepted for publication should also provide a brief biographical sketch of the sort that usually accompanies SJP articles. Please consult recent issues for examples.
