About the journal
Since 1968, The Scriblerian and the Kit-Cats has offered imaginative, insightful, and concise reviews of critical discussion of the English literature of the late seventeenth- and early eighteenth-century. The bi-annual journal addresses recent criticism of Addison, Behn, Congreve, Defoe, Dennis, Dryden, Fielding, Finch, Garth, Gay, Haywood, Hogarth, Mandeville, Montagu, Parnell, Pilkington, Pope, Richardson, Rochester, Rowe, Rymer, Settle, Shaftesbury, Smollett, Steele, Sterne, Swift, Thomson, Toland, and Vanbrugh, as well as discussion of the history and culture of the period.
Instructions to Authors
- Book and article reviews are assigned to staff and are not accepted through blind submissions.
- The Scriblerian may publish one note per issue enlarging topics related to the Scriblerian and Kit-Cat circles or the early novelists (Defoe, Richardson, Fielding, Smollett, Sterne, Behn, Heywood, Manley). The tables of contents of past issues available on this site (or a copy of the journal) defines our range in greater detail. Notes typically do not exceed ten manuscript pages (double-spaced) in length, including footnotes, and they are usually less. We do not publish full-length scholarly essays.
For notes, we prefer annotations that accompany previously unpublished brief material by authors in our field (letters, poems, journals, the odd laundry list); informative position papers—“stylometry” was a recent example; biographical discoveries. We shy away from interpretive pieces. Our ideal is fifteen hundred words, but we run briefer notes—and occasionally those which are longer. Note submissions should be sent to wbgerard@scriblerian.net as Word files (.doc or .docx), double-spaced. We generally respond in under three weeks.
