About the journal

The Review of Metaphysics is devoted to the promotion of technically competent, definitive contributions to philosophical knowledge. Not associated with any school or group, not the organ of any association or institution, it is interested in persistent, resolute inquiries into root questions, regardless of the writers affiliation.

Publisher: Philosophy Education Society, Inc.

Instructions to Authors

Is a POIESIS subscription required to access particular journals?

Yes. Searching and browsing of anything other than the tables of contents requires a POIESIS subscription. We are currently providing free access to browse and search the tables of contents of the issues included in POIESIS. Temporary access can be provided to the full service for individuals who are in a position to evaluate the service for their school, or for publishers who would like to include their journals and would like to try out the service. Free trials are available for institutions.

Can we subscribe to the electronic version of particular journals without a POEISIS subscription?

No. Full text access to specific journals is only allowed in combination with a POIESIS subscription.

The POIESIS subscription establishes a baseline of revenue to support the continuing conversion of back issues to electronic format, and pay for server hardware, software, and maintenance as well as the personnel necessary to acquire, convert, markup and maintain the files from the various journals.

Can we cancel journal subscriptions and reduce our costs by subscribing to POIESIS?

No. POIESIS is fundamentally a research tool and is not intended as a substitute for journal subscriptions. Unrestricted full-text access to any journal in the project is only provided if a library also subscribes to that journal. Most of the journals in POIESIS are owned by academic societies that depend entirely on their journal's revenue to support other activities. These small publishers generally do not have the resources or infrastructure to provide electronic access to their journals, and POIESIS offers a way for these publishers to provide such access without cost or financial risk. POIESIS assumes all of the costs of digitization, markup and delivery of these diverse titles, and in many cases electronic access would not otherwise be feasible. POIESIS increases accessibility to this journal content, offering convenient and complete search functionality for all available issues. The problem of how to provide electronic access to society based journals is particularly acute in philosophy, since well over 70% of the 1,000+ philosophy journals world-wide are published by scholarly societies or similar academic entities. Librarians should also be aware that most philosophy journals, including the very best titles, are also relatively inexpensive, with institutional subscription prices under $100.
