About the journal
Aims & Scope
This acclaimed journal allows historians in a broad range of specialities to experiment with new ways of presenting and interpreting history. Rethinking History challenges the accepted ways of doing history and rethinks the traditional paradigms, providing a unique forum in which practitioners and theorists can debate and expand the boundaries of the discipline.
Rethinking History provides a balance of features not usually found in academic history journals. The mix often includes:
- Articles of 5,000 or 7,000 words
- Concepts - papers exploring key concepts or categories of historical analysis
- Controversies - debates between historians
- Essays of 8,000 to 10,000 words
- Experimental pieces
- Invitations to Historians - historians explain how and why they write history
- Miniatures - pieces of 1,500 words or less, aimed to show brevity can be the soul of history
- Re-reviews - reassessments of classic history texts
- Reconsiderations - essays that "reconsider" the body of work produced by a single historian, an entire school or field
- Reviews and review articles
- Themed Issues

- Submission of a paper to the journal will be taken to imply that it presents original, unpublished, work not under consideration for publication elsewhere. By submitting a manuscript, the authors agree that the exclusive rights to reproduce and distribute the article have been given to the Publishers.
- Permission to quote from or reproduce copyright material must be obtained by the authors before submission and any acknowledgements should be included in the typescript, preferably in the form of an Acknowledgements section at the end of the paper, before the Notes. Where photographs or figures are reproduced, acknowledgement of source and copyright should be given in the caption.
- An abstract of the paper, of up to 300 words, should accompany the article. In addition a list of up to 6 key words, suitable for indexing and abstracting services, should be supplied.
- Articles should not normally exceed 7,000 words in length. Please contact the Editor prior to submission of articles in excess of 7,000 words. If your word processor is capable of doing a word count please use it to print this at the end of the text, together with the date of the manuscript.
- Notes should be kept to a minimum and placed at the end of the article before the references; footnotes should be avoided.

It is important that authors ensure that their typescript is an exact printout of what is on the disk.
Illustrations
Tables, figures and plates should not be inserted within the pages of the manuscript but should be submitted on separate sheets attached to the article.
Tables should be prepared with the minimum use of horizontal rules (usually three are sufficient) and avoiding vertical rules. It is important to provide clear copy of figures (not photocopies or faxes) which can be reproduced by the printer and do not require redrawing.
Photographs should be high-contrast black and white glossy prints. The desired position in the text for each table, figure and plate should be indicated in the manuscript.
All captions for figures and plates (including sources and acknowledgements) should be listed on a separate sheet.
