Notes to Contributors
1. Submissions should be sent, in anonymous format, and in triplicate, to The Editor, Phoenix, Trinity College, University of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario, M5S 1H8, Canada. An abstract of up to 50 words should be included. Contributors are urged to supply, if possible, a version of the abstract in French. Articles are not normally returned unless return postage is pre-paid.
2. When a paper is accepted for publication, the author will be asked to supply a version on diskette if possible. Details on electronic format will be enclosed with the letter of acceptance.
3. Submissions should be typed, double-spaced, on one side only of standard 8 1/2 x 11" or A4 paper, with ample vertical and horizontal margins.
4. Notes should be numbered in one series and typed double-spaced on pages following the main text and numbered consecutively with it.
5. Line drawings and black-and-white photographs should be on pages separate from the text. Originals should not be sent until the article is accepted for publication.
6. Contributors should retain up-to-date copies of submissions.
7. Abbreviations of ancient authors and works should conform to the practice of the most recent edition of the Oxford Classical Dictionary. Single references should be placed in the text in parentheses.
8. Abbreviations of standard corpora of ancient documents should follow the recent practice of SEG and L'Annee Epigraphique for inscriptions and that of the Bulletin of the American Society of Papyrologists for papyri.
9. Abbreviations of titles of journals and standard works of reference should follow the practice specified in The American Journal of Archaeology 95 (1991) 1-16.
10. A bibliography should be supplied for inclusion at the end of the article containing the full bibliographic information concerning all modern works cited, in the following form:
Snodgrass, A. M. 1964. Early Greek Armour and Weapons from the End of the Bronze Age to 600 B.C. Edinburgh.
______ 1974a. "An Historical Homeric Society?," JHS 94: 110-122.
______ 1974b. "Cretans in Arcadia," Antichita Cretesi 2: 196-201.
11. References to works listed in the bibliography should be in short form, as follows:
Snodgrass 1964: 55-57.
12. Such short references to modern works should normally be placed in the text in parentheses, thus:
Snodgrass (1986a: 54) has argued that the major inter-state sanctuaries served an important function in promoting communication and exchange of information between states.
13. Citations in book reviews should follow the traditional format, as follows:
