About the journal
Aims and scope
Philosophical Studies was founded in 1950 by Herbert Feigl and Wilfrid Sellars to provide a periodical dedicated to work in analytic philosophy. The journal remains devoted to the publication of papers in exclusively analytic philosophy. Papers applying formal techniques to philosophical problems are welcome. The principal aim is to publish articles that are models of clarity and precision in dealing with significant philosophical issues. It is intended that readers of the journal will be kept abreast of the central issues and problems of contemporary analytic philosophy.

Manuscript Submission
Articles for publication, with an Abstract of ca. 100 words, may be sent via:

Online Manuscript Submission

Springer now offers authors, editors and reviewers of Philosophical Studies the option of using our fully web−enabled online manuscript submission and review system. To keep the review time as short as possible (no postal delays!), we encourage authors to submit manuscripts online to the journals Editorial Office. Our online manuscript submission and review system offers authors the option to track the progress of the review process of manuscripts in real time.

The online manuscript submission and review system for Philosophical Studies offers easy and straightforward log−in and submission procedures. This system supports a wide range of submission file formats: for manuscripts − Word, WordPerfect, RTF, TXT, and LaTex; for figures − TIFF, GIF, JPEG, EPS, PPT, and PostScript.

Authors are requested to download the Consent to Publish and Transfer of Copyrights form from the Editorial Manager site and to send a completed and duly signed form either by mail or fax to the Philosophical Studies Editorial Office (the fax number and e−mail address of the Philosophical Studies Editorial Office are stated on the form). Authors should still follow the regular instructions for authors when preparing their manuscripts (see below under General Submission Guidelines).

NOTE: By using the online manuscript submission and review system, it is NOT necessary to also submit the manuscript in printout + disk. In case you encounter any difficulties while submitting your manuscript online, please get in touch with the responsible Editorial Assistant by clicking on "CONTACT US" from the tool.

Manuscripts should be submitted to:
General Submission Guidelines
Manuscripts should be typed in a 12 pt. font and double−spaced on one side of plain paper, with wide margins to allow for editorial notes and instructions to the printer. Equations and symbols should be typed if possible; in any case, clarity is essential. The first page of the manuscript should contain the article title and if necessary a running head (condensed title) which should not exceed 45 characters, including spaces. Each page of the manuscript should be consecutively numbered, including pages of references and captions.

Philosophical Studies follows a double−blind reviewing procedure. Authors are therefore requested not to include their name or affiliation in their submitted papers. Self−identifying citations and references in the article text should be avoided. Authors should thus make sure that their names and/or affiliations are NOT mentioned on any of the manuscript pages. If authors do include their names on submitted papers, anonymous reviewing cannot be guaranteed.
Symbols
Unusual symbols should be identified in the margin, and an alternative or equivalent symbol or sign should be provided if the one required is rare. Special care should be taken to distinguish between the letter O and zero, the letter l and the number one, kappa and K, mu and u, nu and v, eta and n. Subscripts and superscripts should be marked if not clear. The use of italics is to be indicated by single underlining; bold−face by wavy underlining.
Notes
Notes which do not belong to the head of the article should be numbered consecutively. They should be placed at the end of the article, not as footnotes. A note which refers to the head of the article should be indicated by an asterisk.
Quotation Marks
Direct quotations appear within double quotation marks, except when a smaller typeface is used for extensive quotations. Single quotation marks are used for words or phrases under discussion, and for expressions used in a technical sense.
