About the journal

The Philosophical ReviewThe Philosophical Review publishes original, scholarly work in all areas of philosophy, with an emphasis on material of interest to generalists. Four issues are published annually, each containing two to four articles and 20-25 book reviews.

The Philosophical Review is abstracted and/or indexed in: Philosopher's Index, Social Sciences Citation Review Index, Sociological Abstracts.

The Philosophical Review practices blind review - that is, manuscript readers are not aware of the identity of a manuscript's author, and the editors are not made aware of the author's identity until they have reached their final decision on the manuscript.

Our in-house editorial board is composed of two faculty members of the Sage School of Philosophy at Cornell University, who serve terms of six to twelve months. Each submission is read by both editors. If a manuscript passes this initial review stage, it is sent to an expert referee for further evaluation. Occasionally, papers are refereed by other members of the Sage School; more often, they are refereed by philosophers not at Cornell.

The initial, internal review typically takes three to four months. When a paper is sent to an expert referee, the review process is thereby extended another four to six weeks; an author whose paper is being sent to a referee will be so notified.

We receive 250-300 submissions per year; of these we are able to accept only 12-15 (for an acceptance rate of about 5%). Rarely is a manuscript accepted outright - most published papers have undergone at least one round of revision.

The great majority of submissions do not pass the initial review, for a variety of reasons: the manuscript may be (a) not sufficiently original, (b) not sufficiently grounded in the relevant literature, (c) too specialized to be of interest to a general readership, (d) too heavily weighted to history or exegesis and not enough to philosophical content; more rarely, a manuscript may simply demonstrate faulty reasoning. Unfortunately, the editors are not able to provide comments or a rationale for their decision, except in the case of a paper that is being encouraged; they simply don't have the time. We hope that authors will understand and excuse this limitation, and that it is somewhat mitigated by the quick turnaround time for the initial review.

Papers that are accepted are usually published within twelve months of the date of acceptance. Authors are given the opportunity to review one set of proofs before publication. b

Instructions to Authors

I N S T R U C T I O N S

Electronic submission is not only allowed, but encouraged. Any format except TeX/LaTeX will do. Attach the file to e-mail addressed to phil-review@cornell.edu.

If you submit a paper manuscript, please send only one copy. The manuscript will not be returned unless you provide an envelope and sufficient postage.

Manuscripts submitted by members of the Cornell department are accepted only on the recommendation of an outside referee.

Manuscripts must meet the following requirements before they will be considered for publication:

Not previously published or under consideration
It is understood that manuscripts submitted to the Philosophical Review for consideration have not been published previously, in part or in whole, and are not simultaneously under consideration for publication elsewhere.

Prepared for blind review

  • The author's name and institutional affiliation are not to appear, so described, in the manuscript.
  • References to the author's own work must be cast in such a way that they do not reveal the identity of the manuscript's author. We recommend simply replacing the entire reference, including title and facts of publication, with an expression such as Author's article, Author's book, Author's book 2, etc.
  • Acknowledgements that could allow a reader to deduce the author's identity must be removed for the initial review.
  • Any prefatory or explanatory remarks intended for the editors or readers must also be given anonymously, not in the cover letter.
Properly formatted
  • All text, including notes and extracted material (quotes, formulae), must be double-spaced. Because notes must be double-spaced, we recommend that they be gathered at the end of the text, rather than placed at the foot of the page. Manuscripts chosen for publication must eventually conform to The Chicago Manual of Style, 14th ed., but for the initial review any clear and consistent citation style is acceptable.
  • All pages must be numbered and have margins of at least one inch on all sides.

Editorial Board

Edited by the faculty of the Sage School of Philosophy at Cornell University, the Philosophical Review has been in continuous publication since 1892. Volume I, edited by Jacob Gould Schurman (President of Cornell from 1892 to 1920), contained articles by William James and John Dewey. A "Prefatory Note" in the first issue expressed editorial policy that continues to rule: "the Review will combine an impartiality and catholicity of tone and spirit. It will not be the organ of any institution, of any sect, or of any interest . . . it must be . . . an absolutely free organ, national and international, of general Philosophy."
