About the journal
Aims and scope

The ARCHIVE nourishes historical research meeting the standards of the mathematical sciences. Its aim is to give rapid and full publication to writings of exceptional depth, scope, and permanence. The ARCHIVE casts light upon the conceptual groundwork of the sciences by analyzing the historical course of mathematical thought and precise theory of nature. While devoted mainly to mathematics and natural philosophy, it also embraces experiment in the physical sciences. The ARCHIVE prefers articles written in English but will accept submissions in French and German. Articles are published in the Archive ONLY via a member of the editorial board, who, by communicating the article, vouches for its quality. An author wishing to publish a paper in the ARCHIVE should submit the manuscript to an appropriate Member of the Board. Manuscripts can be sent to Board members directly or via the ARCHIVE's editorial office at the California Institute of Technology, 228-77, Pasadena, CA 91125, USA.Manuscripts must be submitted in printed form (one-sided) with double-line spacing. If available, an electronic form of the final text should be sent along with the manuscript, preferably TeX or Word. The crabbed, vague, and verbose style often called "scholarly" is not acceptable. Authors should reflect clear thought through chosen, specific words composed in direct, responsible, and active syntax. The Editors cannot undertake to rewrite papers and therefore will return at once to the Communicator such communicated manuscripts as they find deficient in style, form, or clarity. The Archive for History of Exact Sciences is published with editorial assistance provided by the California Institute of Technology. 50 offprints of each contribution are supplied free of charge. If you wish to order additional offprints you must return the order form with the corrected proofs. You are then entitled to receive a pdf file of your article for your own personal use.

Legal Requirements

The author(s) guarantee(s) that the manuscript will not be published elsewhere in any language without the consent of the copyright owners, that the rights of third parties will not be violated, and that the publisher will not be held legally responsible should there be any claims for compensation.

Authors wishing to include figures or text passages that have already been published elsewhere are required to obtain permission from the copyright owner(s) and to include evidence that such permission has been granted when submitting their papers. Any material received without such evidence will be assumed to originate from the authors.

Manuscripts must be accompanied by the ”Copyright Transfer Statement? The form can be obtained from springer.com/journal/407.

Open Choice Publication

In addition to the normal publication process (whereby an article is submitted to the journal and access to that article is granted to customers who have purchased a subscription), Springer now provides an alternative publishing option: Springer Open Choice. A Springer Open Choice article receives all the benefits of a regular 'subscription-based' article, but in addition is made available publicly through Springer's online platform SpringerLink. To publish via Springer Open Choice, upon acceptance please visit springer.com/openchoice to complete the relevant order form and provide the required payment information. Payment must be received in full before publication or articles will be published as regular subscription-model articles. We regret that Springer Open Choice cannot be ordered for published articles.

Manuscript Submission

The ARCHIVE prefers articles written in English, but will also accept submissions in French and German. Articles are published in the Archive ONLY via a member of the editorial board, who, by communicating the article, vouches for its quality. An author wishing to publish a paper in the ARCHIVE should submit the manuscript to an appropriate Member of the Board.

Manuscripts can be sent to Board members directly or via the ARCHIVE’s editorial office at

     Humanities and Social Sciences 101?0

Manuscripts must be submitted in printed form (one-sided) with double-line spacing. If available, an electronic form of the final text should be sent along with the manuscript, preferably TEX or Word. Springer offers a global TEX macro package and a global Word template, both available via springer.com/journal/407, see For authors and editors: Templates.

Manuscript Style

The crabbed, vague, and verbose style often called ‘‘scholarly’’ is not acceptable.

Proofreading

LaTeX files are slightly modified during the TeX-editing process so that the general presentation rules of the journal are adhered to. Word files are converted and should be proofread carefully. Authors should check that the text is complete and that all figures and tables are included. Corrections should be clear; standard correction marks should be used. Corrections that lead to a change in the page layout should be avoided. The author is entitled to formal corrections only. Substantial changes in content, e.g. new results, corrected values, title and authorship are not allowed without the approval of the responsible editor. After online publication, further changes can only be made in the form of an Erratum, which will be hyperlinked to the article.

Offprints

50 offprints of each contribution are supplied free of charge. If you wish to order additional offprints you must return the order form with the corrected proofs.
