About the journal NOVEL: A Forum on Fiction is a scholarly journal dedicated to promoting critical discourse on the novel and publishing new and significant work on fiction and related areas of research and theory. For nearly forty years, NOVEL has been published continuously at Brown University in the Spring, Summer and Fall of each year. The editors welcome submissions on a wide variety of topics, and our international readership spans the disciplines and the language areas. We are particularly interested in articles on the following topics: theories of the novel, the novel in an international context, fictions of nationalism and globalism, narratives of race and ethnicity, the novel and the history of sexuality, fiction and the culture concept, the novel and mass media, aesthetic theory and the genres and forms of the novel, fiction and the sciences, agency in or of the novel.
Instructions to Authors
All manuscripts should be submitted in duplicate, typed and double-spaced, and should conform to the most recent MLA Handbook guidelines, with parenthetical documentation and a list of works cited. Informational footnotes should be kept to a minimum. Though we do not maintain formal length requirements, the editors recommend that manuscripts remain within the range of 20-35 pages. NOVEL reserves the right to return submissions that do not meet these specifications. We do not accept simultaneous submissions. Manuscripts should be accompanied by a cover letter detailing any applicable contact information and should be mailed to:
The Editors Novel: A Forum on Fiction Box 1984 Brown University Providence, RI 02912 USA
All submissions received will be acknowledged via email upon arrival. Hard copies of all official correspondence regarding the editors' decisions will be sent by mail. Please keep us apprised of any anticipated changes of address or contact information. NOVEL does not return or reconsider rejected manuscripts.
NOVEL's three-stage review process typically takes anywhere from 12-16 weeks, allowing time for processing by the editorial staff and initial editorial review, evaluation by external specialist readers in relevant fields, and finally, the Editorial Board's consideration. Please address any questions regarding submissions and publishing to Emily Steinlight (e-mail: Novel_Forum@brown.edu).
