Die abstrakte Malerei und die Bilder der Wissenschaften. Picasso Malewitsch Mondrian Klee
Art and Science. Grammar of abstract painiting. Picasso Malewitsch Mondrian Klee
The project concerns several basic questions which are essential for our understanding of abstract painting of the first third of the 20th century.
When examining abstract painting, the viewer is confronted with objects which do not form part of his every-day visual experience. Abstract paintings show either real (and sometimes modified) objects, or they consist of abstract forms completely. The recipient is supposed to inquire into the intellectual background of form and content.
My research is based on the hypothesis that abstract painters often employed representation techniques originally developed in the fields of natural sciences. In a complicated process, these techniques contributed to the pictural meaning or were even transformed into programmatic statements. Special attention will be drawn on Ernst Mach's Beiträge zur Analyse der Empfindungen, published in 1886. During the project I will further analyse the remarkable influence the scholar Ernst Mach and his research in physiological optics and Gestalt psychology had on the development of abstract painting of Pablo Picasso, Kasimir Malewitsch, Piet Mondrian und Paul Klee.
The project consists of three parts. The first part provides a historical view on Mach's studies and the development of physiological optics, colour theory and Gestalt psychology. It further followes the popular reception of these theories in the early 20th century. In the second part I examine the integration of the new representation techniques in abstract painting. The final part deals with patterns of thought (Denkmodelle) which stand behind the techniques employed. It will inquire into the significance of techniques for the pictoral expression.
The current project is to examine the formal and intellectual foundations of abstract painting under the influence of contemporary scientific developments. It aims at uncovering the scientific background of grammar and content of early modern abstract painting.

Aspekte der Räumlichkeit und Bildlichkeit von Spiegelkabinetten und -galerien des 17. und 18. Jahrhunderts
Space and image in 17th and 18th century mirror cabinets and galleries
Early reflecting, mirror-clad interiors were constructed in France during the 1650s and reached their peak, particularly in the German-speaking culture, in the first half of the 18th century. Research into this type of interior is interesting for two reasons: on the one hand, no in-depth critical historical monograph has hitherto been written on the subject, on the other it is a issue that addresses a specific area of architectural history which was marked by the change of paradigms that characterises the transition from the early modern era to modernity in terms of art-historical categories. Consequently, analysis of the architecture of the late 17th and early 18th centuries provides a means of extending and differentiating our knowledge about a period of change that was largely instrumental in determining the conditions of modernity.
A first part of the project examines the spatial qualities of mirrored rooms, in particular the way in which this facet influences the theoretical aspect. Space as a category of design is missing from the architectural treatises of the Renaissance and Baroque epochs, yet the visual illusion of spatial complexity would appear to be vital for the aesthetics of the mirror cabinet. Thus I explore the relationship of how and to what degree the space determined by constructed parts refers to the one reflected in the mirrors. Within this theoretical framework, I discuss the extent to which the appearance of the reflecting rooms corresponds with the rules of architecture as they are formulated in the decisive treatises of the time as well as the incidence of contradictions.
Analogies between rooms with mirroring walls and rooms decorated by murals and paintings are also included in this "reflective" context of illusionistic and real space. The cost, and thus the prestige value of mirrors exceeded that of paintings. Hence, mirrors were sometimes preferred to paintings, whereby the painted and the reflecting "media" were often combined. Against this background, I then go on to investigate the conception and reception of painted and reflected images on the basis of aesthetic theories in terms of their interaction based, for example, on the concepts of "representation" and "imitation" that were prevalent in the discourse of art theory at the time.
Furthermore, I consider the qualities of mirror-clad rooms against a perceptual-psychological background from the point of view of the relationship between the subject and the state of "being mirrored": on the one hand the situation of "seeing oneself reflected" in a mirror or other object, on the other the state of "being reflected" by an object or by the self. The sensitivity of the beholder is subsequently to be embedded in its social context: it was an art-loving aristocracy, distinguished by a sophisticated social structure, who commissioned and frequented halls of mirror. In this respect, principles of modern psychology are modified in the light of sociological analysis of the epoch and on the basis of contemporary writings on civility and the ceremonial.
In addition, the phenomenon of mirror cabinets and galleries is discussed from the angles of natural science and the history of technology. The development of mirror-clad rooms was influenced by innovations in the manufacture of glass. Accordingly, the development of mirror production in the 17th and 18th centuries, as well as the specific processes of individual workshops, provide important arguments for the discussion. Relevant knowledge is also gained through early modern optical experiments with mirror-clad apparatus. Apart from the physical aspect, these point to an eminent aesthetic dimension that will be examined in terms of its influence on the conception of the mirror cabinet.
