About the journal

Published by the Montana Historical Society since 1951, Montana The Magazine of Western History contains articles that showcase the people, places, and events that shaped the state and the western region.

Four issues a year keep readers current on issues, controversies, and new discoveries involving the history and future of Montana and the West. Each issue is lavishly illustrated with historical maps, drawings, and photographs--some from the Society's own archives, others from any number of public and private sources. The larger 7-7/8" x 10-3/4" size, along with full-color art on the cover and occasionally inside, sets the magazine apart from most of its genre.

In addition to the fascinating articles, the magazine features book and movie reviews, commentaries, Montana episodes, and a limited amount of advertising confined to rare and new books, art objects, and other products and events appealing to our readers' interests in American--especially western--history.

Instructions to Authors

Submitting Your Manuscript

Montana The Magazine of Western History, published quarterly by the Montana Historical Society, welcomes submissions that focus on the history of Montana and the American and Canadian Wests.

Montana is a scholarly journal, which means that articles are submitted to peer review and must show evidence of original research on significant facets of history or provide a new interpretation of historical events that changes the way we view a particular historical topic. A rewriting of standard incidents generally available in other sources will not be accepted. Articles should include endnotes, and manuscripts, excluding endnotes, should not be more than 6,000 words, or about 20 double-spaced pages. Because we are an illustrated journal, suggestions for illustrations assist in our judgments.

If your article is judged appropriate for Montana, we will submit it to anonymous review; that is, a blind copy of your manuscript will be sent out-of-house for evaluation, usually to two experts in the field. Upon receiving their comments, we will forward a summary of the readers' reports to you with our determination. The process usually takes six to eight weeks.

The best style guide for Montana is a recent issue of our magazine, but generally we follow the latest revised edition of the Chicago Manual of Style.

Please submit your manuscript as an email attachment to Molly Holz (mholz@mt.gov). If electronic submission is not possible, please send two printed copies of your manuscript. When submitting an electronic or hard copy, be sure to include current contact information.
