About the journal

About the Journal

Libraries & the Cultural Record, in its 42nd year of publication, is the only journal devoted exclusively to the broad history of collections of knowledge that form the cultural record. Its articles explore the significance of those collections in libraries, archives, and museums in the context of cultural and social history, unlimited as to time and place.

The peer-reviewed quarterly journal publishes historical research from scholars worldwide, along with thoughtful essays and book reviews. Libraries & the Cultural Record accepts approximately 48 percent of manuscripts submitted for publication. In a 2005 survey of LIS deans, who were asked which publications are considered important for tenure decisions, the journal was ranked number 11 out of 71 journals in the field.

Libraries & the Cultural Record is published by University of Texas Press and affiliated with the School of Information and the Kilgarlin Center for Preservation of the Cultural Record at The University of Texas at Austin. It a valuable resource for those in the fields of library science and librarianship, archival and records enterprise, preservation/conservation of information, and museum studies, as well as those interested in a fresh perspective on cultural, social, and intellectual history.

Established in 1966 as the Journal of Library History, it was edited and published at Florida State University until 1976 when its editorship moved to The University of Texas at Austin. In 1988, its title was changed to Libraries & Culture; it assumed its present title in 2006.


Instructions to Authors

Author Guidelines

Libraries & the Cultural Record is a journal of history. We invite submission of articles that explore the history of the related domains, individually and in concert, of libraries and librarianship, archival and records enterprise, preservation and conservation in the information environment, and history museums ¨D the antecedents of the emerging field of information.

We seek articles highlighting the drama of those who created, organized, preserved or facilitated access to the cultural record ¡ª recorded knowledge of human discovery, creativity, and achievement. We especially welcome articles that highlight the interplay of historical forces, issues, people, and ideas.

Please see the journal¡¯s current and recent issues for the types of articles accepted for publication. Authors may wish to submit a proposal for an article prior to submitting a completed manuscript or contact the editor to discuss whether a topic would be appropriate for Libraries & the Cultural Record. Certain broad topics are of particular interest to the journal. See suggestions under Topics of Interest.

Articles should be approximately 6,000 to 10,000 words in length. See Submission Requirements for information on manuscript requirements and the submission process. All articles are subject to peer review.

Essays and Notes

We also welcome submissions of noteworthy essays on topics of interest to historians and other professionals in the Information Domain, as well as notes relating to professional activities and issues. Essays and notes are subject to review by the editor. See Submission Requirements for manuscript format.
