Instructions to Authors
Information for Authors
INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS
Submission of articles Articles (including notes and studies) submitted for publication should embody original research or critical study and should not be under simultaneous consideration for publication elsewhere, either in the same or in an expanded form.
The length of articles published in the Journal ranges from less than 1,000 to over 30,000 words. The editors welcome enquiries, before submission, about the suitability of articles for publication in the Journal.
Articles should be submitted by e-mail attachment, preferably in rich text file (.rtf) format; authors are also requested to send two hard copies to the editorial office. Authors who are not able to submit email attachments should enclose a floppy disc or CD-ROM with their hard copies.
Articles in biblical studies and closely related fields should be sent to Professor John Barton ( john.barton@oriel.ox.ac.uk), articles in all other fields to Dr Graham Gould (jtseditors@yahoo.co.uk). The editorial office address, for general correspondence and books for review, is:
The Journal of Theological Studies St Stephen's House 16 Marston Street Oxford 0X4 1JX UK Tel: +44 (0)1865 432301 Email: jts@ssho.ox.ac.uk Web: www.jts.oupjournals.org
Please supply full contact details including an email address if at all possible. Electronic proofs will be sent to this email address unless hard copy proofs are specifically requested.
Articles should be double-spaced in a reasonably sized clear font (e.g. 12-point Times New Roman) with notes placed at the foot of the page, not at the end of the document, and should include an abstract of between 100 and 200 words placed at the beginning of the article.
If Greek, Hebrew, or other non-Latin alphabets are used, a covering note should specify which fonts/packages are used in the electronic copy submitted. As a Greek font 'Graeca' is preferred.
To facilitate anonymous refereeing, the author's name and institution should not appear at the head or foot of the article.
Recent issues of the Journal are the best guide to its stylistic and scholarly conventions, but some important points include:
. Use an author-title system for references to modern works. . Titles of biblical and apocryphal books and Qumran documents should be in roman type; titles of pseudepigraphical books and all other titles in italics. . Biblical references: 1 Cor. 3:7-21, 1 Cor. 3:7-4:1; Isaiah 40-66; Rev. 6:1, 4, 7; 8:2, 5 (i.e. no spacing between colon and numbers). . The phrases 'Old Testament' and 'New Testament' should not be abbreviated. . Use single quotation marks except for quotations within quotations. . Quotations of more than four or five lines may be displayed; no quotation marks. . Use original script where possible for Hebrew, Greek, Syriac, and Coptic text. Latin text should be in italics. Do not use quotation marks for these scripts. . Numbers under 10 (except in lists and page references) should be spelt out. . Page numbers should be in the form: p. 12, pp. 42-54, pp. 147-9, pp. 116-17. . In references to patristic works, use forms such as 4.xxvi.27 or 4.26.27 (i.e. u
Illustrations Authors of accepted articles that wish to include any supporting illustrative material for publication should, if possible, supply at least one illustration, which must be a good photograph or line drawing; photocopies are not acceptable. Permission for reproduction is essential and is the responsibility of the author.
Images on disk can be accepted in Adobe PhotoShop compatible formats. We can accept 3.5-inch floppy disks, Zip disks, and CD-ROMs. Figures must be saved as highresolution TIFF files (at least 300 pixels per inch for photographs, and 1200 pixels per inch for black and white line drawings).
Proofs Authors will receive a PDF proof of their article by email and it is essential that a current email address is supplied with the manuscript. Proofing instructions will accompany the PDF file but the proof should be checked immediately and returned to the editorial office.
Offprints The contributor of an Article or a Note will receive free online access to his paper, a copy of the Number and twenty five separate copies of his contribution, and may purchase additional offprints when he returns his corrected proofs. The price of these additional copies depends upon the length of the paper. The contributor of a Review will only receive a copy of the Number.
Copyright Manuscripts submitted will be expected to contain original work and should not have been published in abridged or other form elsewhere. It is a condition of publication in the Journal that authors grant an exclusive licence to Oxford University Press. This ensures that requests from third parties to reproduce articles are handled efficiently and consistently and will also allow the article to be as widely disseminated as possible. As part of the licence agreement, authors may use their own material in other publications provided that The Journal of Theological Studies is acknowledged as the original place of publication, and Oxford University Press is notified in writing and in advance.
