About the journal

Aims & Scope

The Journal of the Society of Archivists deals with matters of interest to archivists, archive conservators and records managers, as well as to all involved in the study and interpretation of archives.

Published on behalf of the Society of Archivists, the journal deals with the very latest developments in these fields, including the challenges and opportunities presented by new media and information technology. It aims to represent current professional practices and research.

Instructions to Authors

Instructions for Authors:

***Note to Authors: please make sure your contact address information is clearly visible on the outside of all packages you are sending to Editors.***

The views expressed are the responsibility of individual contributors and do not represent the views or opinions of the Society of Archivists, its Officers or Council.

Manuscripts should be sent to the Editor: Andrew Flinn at the School of Library, Archive and Information Studies, University College London, Gower Street, London WC1E 6BT, UK. Articles can be considered only if three complete copies of each manuscript are submitted. They should be typed on one side of the paper, double spaced, with ample margins. A cover sheet should bear the title of the contribution, name(s) of the author(s) and the address where the work was carried out. A second sheet should again give the title of the piece (without the name(s) of the author(s), to facilitate 'blind' refereeing). The full postal address of the author who will check proofs and receive correspondence and offprints should also be included on the cover sheet. All pages should be numbered. The total word count for the article, including endnotes and references, should be supplied. Books for review should be sent to Ms Kate Manning, Archivist, Archives Department, University College Dublin, Belfield, Dublin 4, Rep of Ireland.

Electronic Submissions. Authors should send the final, revised version of their articles in both hard copy paper and electronic disk forms. It is essential that the hard copy (paper) version exactly matches the material on disk. Please print out the hard copy from the disk you are sending. Submit three printed copies of the final version with the disk to the journal's editorial office. Save all files on a standard 3.5 inch high-density disk. We prefer to receive disks in Microsoft Word in a PC format, but can translate from most other common word processing programs as well as Macs. Please specify which program you have used. Do not save your files as 'text only' or 'read only'.

Tables and captions to illustrations. Tables must be submitted on separate sheets and not included as part of the text. The captions to illustrations should be gathered together and also submitted on a separate sheet. Tables should be numbered by Roman numerals, and figures by Arabic numerals. The approximate position of tables and figures should be indicated in the manuscript. Captions should include keys to symbols.

Figures. Please supply one set of artwork in a finished form, suitable for reproduction. Figures will not normally be redrawn by the publisher.

References. Endnote numbers should be placed in the text, following the end of a sentence unless there is a need to endnote a particular word.

Printed Works. These should have a full bibliographic reference at the first citation, following the style below:

H. Gee, The Elizabethan Clergy and the Settlement of Religion, 1558-1564 (Oxford, 1898), pp 35-36.
H. Robinson (ed.), The Zurich Letters (Cambridge, 1842-45), vol 1,
p 23.
P. Hair, 'The chapel in the English landscape', The Local Historian,
vol 21 (1991), p 7.

Subsequent citations should use short titles and not ibid.or op. cit.

The Journal of the Society of Archivists should always be cited as in the following example:

E. Higgs, 'Household and work in the nineteenth-century censuses of England and Wales', JSA, vol 11 (1990), pp 75-76.

Manuscripts. These should be cited by repository and reference code. The repository name should be abbreviated after the first citation. Where all manuscripts are in one repository, the repository title need only be given at the first citation. Reference codes should follow the conventions used in the relevant repository.

Quotations. These should be in modern English, with standardised spelling and punctuation, unless the original language, punctuation, etc. is required for textual discussion.

Place names should use the standard English form if one is in common use; otherwise the local modern spelling should be used. Surnames should adopt the standard modern form.

Acronyms should be preceded by the title in full.

Proofs will be sent to authors if there is sufficient time to do so. They should be corrected and returned to the Editor within three days. Major alterations to the text cannot be accepted.

Free article access: Corresponding authors can receive 50 free reprints, free online access to their article through our website (www.informaworld.com) and a complimentary copy of the issue containing their article. Complimentary reprints are available through Rightslink?and additional reprints can be ordered through Rightslink?when proofs are received. If you have any queries, please contact our reprints department at reprints@tandf.co.uk

Copyright: It is a condition of publication that authors vest or license copyright in their articles, including abstracts, in the Society of Archivists. This enables us to ensure full copyright protection and to disseminate the article, and the journal, to the widest possible readership in print and electronic formats as appropriate. Authors may, of course, use the article elsewhere after publication without prior permission from the Society of Archivists, provided that acknowledgement is given to the Journal as the original source of publication, and that Taylor & Francis is notified so that our records show that its use is properly authorised. Authors are themselves responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyright material from other sources.
