About the journal
Established in 1990, The Journal of the History of Sexuality illuminates the history of sexuality in all its expressions, recognizing various differences of class, culture, gender, race, and sexual orientation. Spanning geographic and temporal boundaries, JHS provides a much-needed forum for historical, critical, and theoretical research in this field. Its cross-cultural and cross-disciplinary character brings together original articles and critical reviews from historians, social scientists, and humanities scholars worldwide.
The Journal of the History of Sexuality is indexed and/or abstracted in America: History and Life, Bibliography of the History of Art, Criminal Justice Abstracts, Current Contents/Social and Behavioral Sciences, e-psyche, Historical Abstracts, International Bibliography of Periodical Literature, MLA Directory of Periodicals, MLA International Bibliography, and Social Sciences Citation Index.
Instructions to Authors
Contributor Guidelines
We invite submissions of original articles to the Journal of the History of Sexuality. All articles deemed appropriate for JHS are sent out anonymously for peer review by scholars who are experts in the author's particular field. Although JHS publishes articles only in the English language, we are under some circumstances able to arrange for peer review of manuscripts in their original languages. We cannot accept or review articles that have been previously published or are under consideration by any other journal or publisher.
We regret that we are not able to pay contributors. However, each author will receive two copies of the issue in which the article appears; each book reviewer will receive one copy of the issue in which the review appears.
Preparation of Copy
- All manuscripts must be in the English language, unless otherwise approved by the editors. Please type all copy (including block quotations and footnotes) double-spaced on sturdy paper, allowing wide margins of at least one inch on all four sides. The preferred length for articles is between 30 and 45 pages.
- A separate title page should include the title of the article and the author's name, affiliation and address. In order to protect anonymity, the author's name should not appear on the manuscript; all identifying references and footnotes will be masked for the review process. Please number the manuscript pages consecutively in the upper-right hand corner.
- A glossy print of each illustration should accompany the manuscript. Good quality photocopies, however, are permitted for the review process only. Authors are responsible for obtaining necessary permissions.
- All tables, charts and figures should appear on separate pages following the footnotes and should be numbered consecutively with the rest of the paper.
- Three copies of the original manuscript should be sent to Professor Mathew Kuefler, History Department, San Diego State University, 5500 Campanile Drive, San Diego, CA 92182-8147. If you wish to have your manuscript returned, please include a large, self-addressed, stamped envelope (USA only). It would be helpful if you would let us know if your article is available on computer disk, although it is not necessary to include disks with the manuscript submission.
Format of Footnotes
All footnotes should be typed double-spaced on a separate page (or pages) following the last page of text. They should be numbered consecutively through the article and must correspond to the numbers in the text. Footnote style generally follows The Chicago Manual of Style (15th edition). Some examples:

Subsequent citations to a work previously cited should provide only the author's last name and the page number(s) (and in case of citations to more than one work by the same author, a short title of the work). Do not use op. cit. or loc. cit. Frequently cited works by the same author (e.g., in a literary study) may use abbreviations in the text, with full titles at first appearance. JHS does not include abstracts, reference lists or bibliographies in published articles.
